The ReMOTE SL Mac installer does not recognise the unit when I am asked to connect it.
This is known to have occured when the ReMOTE SL has been renamed in Audio MIDI Setup. Open Audio MIDI Setup (in Application/Utilities) and click on the ReMOTE SL to view its properties. Ensure that it is named ‘ReMOTE SL’ and try running the installer again.
If the unit still won’t update then you can use a free application called SysEx Librarian to update the unit (download it from here). To update the ReMOTE SL, follow these steps:
1. Download the ‘ReMOTE SL OS 3.0.00 sysex files’ from the ReMOTE SL downloads page.
2. Connect the ReMOTE SL to your computer and turn it on, then open SysEx Librarian.
3. Select ‘Port 1’ in the drop-down menu at the top of the SysEx Librarian window.
4. Drag the ReMOTE SL sysex update files onto the SysEx Librarian window.
5. Get the SL ready to receive the new OS by pressing ‘global’ to enter the global menu, scroll up to the 4th page and press the button under ‘O/S reveice USBa’. Press the left-hand scroll up button to confirm.
6. In SysEx Librarian, click on the ‘OSNormal’ file if you have an SL 25, 37 or 61 or click on ‘OSZeRO’ if you have an SL ZeRO and then press the ‘play’ icon to send the data to the SL. Once the OS update has finished a message will appear on the ReMOTE SL display propting you to turn the unit off and on again. Turn the ReMOTE SL off (not back on again yet) and quit SysEx Librarian.
7. Open Audio MIDI Setup (in Applications/Utilities) and select the ‘MIDI Devices’ page. Select the ReMOTE SL and click on ‘Remove Device’, then turn on the ReMOTE SL. It should re-appear in Audio MIDI Setup with three sets of in/out ports (where previously port 3 was only an in port).
8. Exit Audio MIDI Setup and re-open SysEx Librarian. Once again select ‘Port 1’ in the drop-down menu, then send the ‘Globals’ file and then the ‘Templates’ file from SysEx Librarian to the SL. You do not need to do anything on the ReMOTE SL before sending these files, simply select the file in SysEx Librarian and click the ‘play’ icon to send it.
9. If you will use the ReMOTE SL with either Pro Tools or Digital Performer then you need to send the correct HUI file. Send the file ‘HUI’ if you use Pro Tools or send ‘DPHUI’ if you use Digital Performer. As in step 8, you do not need to do anything on the ReMOTE SL first.
After following these steps run ReMOTE SL installer 3.0 again (available from the ReMOTE SL downloads page : http://www.novationmusic.com/downloads.asp?productid=30&type=1). When the ReMOTE SL Upgrade message appears click ‘cancel’ to skip the upgrade.
