How do I use the mod wheel on my controller keyboard to automate MachFive?

In MachFive 1.x:

Some MachFive parameters, such as Pan Modulation and Frequency Modulation, can be directly controlled by the mod wheel (MIDI Controller #1). For these items, you can select “Modulation wheel” from the modulation pop-up menu for these parameters.

Other items, such as LFO 1 rate and Filter Cutoff Frequency, are controlled by other MIDI Controllers like #96 and #74 (see the link below for more info on which MIDI Controllers automate MachFive). In Digital Performer, you can reassign MIDI Controller #1 from the mod wheel to be a different type MIDI Controller data. This is helpful if you are using a basic controller keyboard that can only send continuous data with a mod wheel.

Here’s how to set it up. In this example, we’ll use the mod wheel to automate the rate for LFO 1:

  • In Digital Performer, go the Mixing Board and find your MIDI track that is sending to MachFive.
  • In the first insert, add the “Reassign Continuous Data” MIDI plug-in.
  • Open the Reassign Continuous Data plug-in, and select Change.
  • In the top half, select Controller and enter 1 in the box next to it.
  • In the bottom half, select Controller and enter 96 in the box next to it.
  • Now when you move the mod wheel, it will modulate the rate for LFO 1.

If you wish to use the mod wheel to simultaneously control more than one parameter in MachFive, add another Reassign Continuous Data plug-in in the second insert on the MIDI track. You will need to go back set the first plug-in to Copy, and then the second one to Change. If you want to use more than two, set all but the last plug-in to Copy and the last to Change.

If you want to commit these controller reassignments to your MIDI track, highlight the region of MIDI data that contains the mod wheel data (MIDI Controller #1) and choose “Capture Realtime MIDI Effects …” from the Region menu.

In MachFive 2.x:

You can directly automate or modulate most parameters with MIDI CC 1 or any other CC you’d like. Right-click a paramter to open its Automation/Modulation dialog to assign a MIDI CC.
