Will my MidiSport or other Midiman midi interface work with FreeMIDI (Digital Performer, Unisyn, etc)? How do I set it up?

Midiman interfaces, including the various midisports require using OMS. Freemidi 1.4 and higher have the ability to “Use OMS” and therefore use Midiman midi interfaces. Follow the instructions below carefully to set your system up.

1. Install OMS _First_ : OMS 2.3.8 installer is available on the Midisport driver CD
**** This works much better if OMS is installed before FreeMIDI. ****
a) If FreeMIDI is already installed, use Sherlock2 to find any item named FreeMIDI. Throw them all into the TRASH and restart your computer
b) Before beginning to install OMS, please make sure that you quit all applications. Once all applications are closed, install OMS by double-clicking on the INSTALL OMS 2.3.8 icon. This can be found inside the folder labeled, “OMS 2.3.8.”
c) Do an Easy Install by clicking on the INSTALL button, leaving the defaults as is. If Opcode asks if you have a Studio 3 or 4, answer “no,” unless you actually own that particular interface. OMS installer will ask you to Restart… do so.

2. Install Midimsport drivers
a) go back to the MIDIMAN CD and open up the Midisport folder that corresponds to your Midisport (1×1, 2×2, 4×4, 8×8).
b) Double-click on the MIDISPORT INSTALLER icon. After a successful installation of the Midisport drivers, click “Quit.”
c)Reboot your computer. You are now ready to configure OMS.

3. Configuring OMS
a) Go to the Chooser under the Apple Menu and make sure that Appletalk is turned off.
b) Go to your Opcode folder.
c) Open up the OMS Applications Folder.
d) Double-click on OMS SETUP.
e) The CREATE A NEW STUDIO SETUP dialog box now appears. Click OK.
f) The OMS DRIVER SEARCH window now appears asking you where you want OMS to search. Because the Midisport is a USB device, leave PRINTER and MODEM blank and click SEARCH.
g) The Midisport will show up along with a few other things OMS has found (Quicktime, IAC, etc.). Click OK. (NOTE: See below if OMS could not load the Midisport OMS driver).
h)Enable all the ports by clicking the checkboxes associated with all the available output ports.
i) Save the studio as “My Studio Setup” or anything you wish to call it.
j) Pull down the STUDIO menu and execute TEST STUDIO.
j)Drag the cursor over the one of the keyboard icons. It will turn into an eighth-note. Click the eighth note on the keyboard icon. The “OUT A” light on the Midisport should light up once for every click. Do the same for the other keyboard icons (if you have a 2×2, 4×4, or 8×8) and notice that Out B or C will light up respectively to whatever keyboard icon you click.
k)If you have a MIDI controller plugged into the Midisport, play a note on it. Your Macintosh should say to you, “MIDI received” if you have the volume on your Macintosh turned up.

4. Reinstall and configure FreeMIDI
a) QUIT all applications including OMS
b) Insert your MOTU installer CD (Digital Performer, Unisyn, etc.) Run the application installer. BUT when you get to “Easy Install”, change it to “Custom Install” and select FREEMIDI only.
**** You can also download the latest FreeMIDI installer from www.motu.com and simply do an Easy Install from this installer.
c) Proceed with the custom install and Restart when asked to do so.
d) Launch FreeMIDI Setup, a dialog will appear saying, “FREEMIDI HAS DETECTED OMS ON YOUR SYSTEM. WOULD YOU LIKE TO USE OMS OR FREEMIDI?”
e) Click the OMS button. FreeMIDI will proceed to open an copy of the OMS setup you configured in the previous section.
