iMic: I think I’ve installed it correctly, but I can’t get sound.
OS 9 VERSIONS:
Let’s stick with the Sound Control Panel for testing. If you can see “USB Audio” under Input and Output, then go to Alerts. Press the New Sound, then the red Record that appears, and try recording any sound. Press Stop and then Play. You should hear what you recorded (make sure you’re monitoring whatever source you selected in Output). If so, the iMic is working correctly and the problem is with whatever software you’re attempting to use.
If you can’t record an Alert Sound, swap USB ports and try recording again (you’ll have to go through the selecting process again). If you still can’t record, open the Apple System Profiler (under the Apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of your screen). When it appears on the screen go to Devices and Volumes. You should see 3 occurrences of Audio (iMic USB audio system). If you see those three iMics, the computer is aware of the iMic and the problem is somewhere else. Try using another microphone/tape deck, etc., or output device. If you can’t see iMics in the Apple System Profiler and you’ve followed all the steps, you should do a clean install of your operating system and try again. If, after you’ve done a clean install, you still don’t see the iMic in the Apple System Profiler, you’ve got a defective iMic and should contact your reseller.
If you can record an Alert Sound, but the iMic isn’t working with your preferred software, you should contact the software manufacturer first to make sure the version you’ve got is compatible with your Mac OS.
OS X VERSIONS:
Verify that the iMic is being seen in Sound and Speech Preference Panes and you’ve selected your preferred Output device. Then open iMovie (It came with OS X and can usually be found in Applications on your hard drive). In iMovie you’ll see an Audio tab on the right hand side of your screen. Click on it, then click Record Voice and speak into your microphone or activate your Line Level source. You should see corresponding movement in the signal meter and progress bar at the bottom of your screen. Press Stop, then press Rewind and Play in the iMovie panel and listen to what you just recorded.
If you can’t record a sound in iMovie, swap USB ports and try recording again (you’ll have to go through the selecting process again). If you still can’t record, open the Apple System Profiler. It will be in the Utilities folder under Applications. Open Devices and Volumes and, connected to one of the USB ports, you should see a Griffin Technology folder. Open that folder and you should see the iMic. If you’ve connected the iMic directly to a USB port on your Mac and you don’t see it in the Apple System Profiler, you may have a defective iMic. If you can record into iMovie, but the iMic isn’t working with your preferred software, you should contact the software manufacturer first to make sure the version you’ve got is compatible with your Mac OS.
