The Differences Between Speaker Connections

Many inSync readers have asked some variation on the following questions: What is the difference between the various kinds of speaker wire connectors (push in types, screw in type, and the strip type) on amps and speakers? Which are better? Are banana plugs really better than 1/4″ connectors? What about binding posts or Speakon connectors? For the most part the difference between terminal strips (see WFTD archive Terminal Strip), binding posts (banana connectors), and Speakon connectors (see WFTD above Speakon) is convenience. IF used properly (and that’s a big IF) they all make very good connection and can deliver the high currents required by today’s demanding applications. The two types of connectors that do not make as solid a connection are the push in type (though they are sometimes pretty good) and the 1/4″ type. A 1/4″ plug is the absolute worst connector to use for transferring large amounts of power efficiently, which of course is exactly what the job of a “power amp” is. Plus, every time you plug and unplug one you create a momentary short circuit (just ask any guitarist who has plugged in a guitar with his amp on). Speakon type connectors (along with EP style) are the most rugged connectors we’ve seen is everyday use, so for touring systems they are recommended. Banana plugs work well in semi-permanent situations where high reliability and ease of disconnect are required, and the budget does not permit use of the slightly more expensive Speakon connectors. Terminal strips work just fine in fixed installations, but are obviously a horrible choice where ease of disconnect is desired.

Select manufacturers may require that only the manufacturer’s products qualify towards the minimum purchase amount needed to be eligible for promotional financing. Otherwise, an invoice that meets the minimum purchase amount and contains at least one qualifying manufacturer product is eligible for promotional financing. No interest will be charged on promo purchase balance, and equal monthly payments are required on promo purchase until it is paid in full. The payments equal the amount financed divided by the number of months in the promo period, rounded up to the next whole dollar. These payments may be higher than the payments that would be required if this purchase was a non-promo purchase. During the last month(s) of the promo period the required monthly payment may be reduced due to the prior months’ rounding. Regular account terms apply to non-promo purchases. The estimated required monthly payment shown which excludes taxes and delivery equals the amount financed divided by the number of months in the promo period, rounded up to the next cent. During the last month(s) of the promo period the required monthly payment may be reduced due to this rounding. These payments apply only with the financing offer shown. If you make these payments by the due date each month, you should pay off this amount financed within the promo period, if it is the only balance you are paying off. If you have other balances on your account, this payment will be added to any other minimum monthly payments.
