Does Cubase on Mac work with OS X??

Official Steinberg Statement

Steinberg, the creator of technologies such as ASIO and VST, technologies that have shaped the development path of native audio processing and low latency audio cards, are taking a leading role in bringing the advantages of these technologies to the Mac OS X platform. The combination of a modern multithreaded and multiprocessor capable computer platform, such as Apple can deliver with their latest hardware in combination with OS X, is the basis for the future development of the Apple platform as a vehicle for professional audio and music productions.

While the concepts remain the same, the delivery mechanism for ASIO and VST services under OS X is somewhat different than under previous Apple OS versions: Steinberg have been working on the necessary changes since the relevant sections of OS X approached completion during the beta versions of OS X.

It is not just the ASIO and VST technologies that must be adapted: The host applications need to be changed for effective operation under OS X.
Steinberg now have a been adapting the code that lies behind Cubase and Nuendo over that last year ready for producing native OS X versions of these products. These ‘carbonized’ projects are being driven forward in parallel with our current OS 8/9 projects. Steinberg have a in-house beta version of a true OS X Nuendo version now which is being prepared for release when Steinberg feel the program and the market is ready for it. The Cubase VST project also benefits from the work in progress on the Nuendo project as the Cubase shares a common VST concept, ASIO and VST Audio Engine. The next major release of Cubase VST will be available for OS X.

At the moment there are very few drivers for audio and MIDI hardware from the hardware manufacturers themselves. To release an OS X application that can only be used with a very limited, semi-professional or even only the manufacturers own hardware seems to be a backward step in world where the advantages of open standards like VST and ASIO are clear.

Steinberg take the OS X issues very seriously: OS X is the future of the Macintosh operation system and therefore it is the future of professional audio and music production systems on the Apple platform.
