Creating A K2000 Outboard Effects Channel

For all you K2000 and K2500 owners out there, another handy tip from Sweetwater’s Chief Soundware Engineer Daniel “Mr. V.A.S.T.” Fisher:Creating an Outboard Effects ChannelHere’s a tip that’s great for live and studio use. If you have an outboard effects device that you want to use occasionally on random programs, you can create one or more dedicated “Outboard Effects Channels” on your K2000 or K2500 to access the effect directly. This results in a particular MIDI channel that always sends the audio of its program to a different output than the MIX Outs. This alternate out can then be routed to your outboard effects processor (or to separate mixer channels, or wherever). After that you can either send the outputs of your effects device on to your mixer or you can return them back into your Kurzweil via a Send/Return” cable. (More on this cable below.)Go to the MIDI Channels Page, get on the desired MIDI channel and change “OutputPair: Prog” to B(Dry). (You can also choose “C” or “D” in all rackmounts and K2500’s.) Now you can use a pair of regular 1/4″ audio cables to go from your B Outputs to your outboard effects unit for any program that’s on that MIDI Channel. You can then send the outputs of that effects unit to your mixer, or you can return the signal back into the B Output jacks of your Kurzweil. To return the signal directly to your Kurzweil, you will need (in place of the regular 1/4″ audio cables) two send/return cables which have a male Tip/Ring/Sleeve plug on one end and a separate pair of 1/4″ male plugs on the other. (Ed. Note: These cables are also known as “insert” cables)By plugging the two stereo ends into the B Output jacks, the two Send plugs into the Left/Right inputs of your effect and the two return plugs into your effect’s L/R Outputs, you can send any program you want into your outboard effect and return it to your Kurzweil’s MIX Outputs simply by calling that program up on your “Outboard Effects Channel”.
