Compatiblity Warning: MOTU Firewire interfaces and “Firewire 800” G4’s.
MOTU and Sweetwater have discovered a problem with late model G4’s which had the FW800 port in addition to the two FW400 (firewire) ports. This problem occured when using a MOTU Firewire interface (896, 828, 828mkII) and a Firewire hard drive. Several applications, including DP3 and DP4, would have dropouts in playback when audio is playing from the firewire drive, but NOT when playing back from an internal drive.
Similar problems with G4800 G4’s, firewire interfaces and firewire hard drives were identified by several other companies, including Digidesign.
The only proposed solutions are to either (a) add a PCI Firewire card to connect the firewire drive, (b) use a different type of drive in place of the firewire drive ( a second IDE drive works well), or (c) avoid the FW800 G4’s.
REMINDER – THE PROBLEM IS ISOLTATED TO THIS COMBINTATION:
1) G4 with “Firewire 800” port
2) MOTU Firewire interface
3) Any Firewire hard drive
