How do I assign controllers on the pc 88 PC88 controller
Lets start by creating a”midi setup” with four
different zones.
From Midi Setups press ‘Midi transmit” then press zone 1 and set it to midi channel 1, now press zone 2 and set it midi channel 2.. Follow this same pattern for zones 3 and 4 as well.
Assigining controllers.
1. Go to zone 1 and using the cursor button ( under the LCD) and the Alpha Wheel, set the “Dest” parameter to “Both” … This allows the pc88 to receive and send midi on the same midi channel, which is what you’ll want to do if you need to layer a sound from the pc88 with a sound from an external module. Alternately you could set this to “Midi” and the PC88 will then only send midi to external midi devices and not play it’s own internal voices for this zone on the selected midi channel. The last “Dest” option is “Local” and here the Pc 88 will only respond to midi internally and doesn’t send out to external modules.
2. While we’re still on zone #1, Press the “controller” button and notice that the physical controller
“Wheel #1 Up” is assigned to “Cntrl Num: Pitch Up… from here turning the Alpha wheel left to right gives you a list of all the possible midi controllers that the phsyical controller “wheel#1 up” can be assigned to. Pressing the right cursor button repeatedly takes us to parameters such as “scale” which determines the amount of the controller applied to the sound , “Offset”, kind of the opposite of scale , “Curve”, controlls the shape of the data sent by the controller, and several other parameters designed to modify how the instrument transmits controller data.
3. If you now keep pressing the cursor button to the right you will come to the next assignable physical controller, (there are sliders, buttons , footpedals, wheels, etc.) all it’s assocciated parameters, and the midi controllers that you can assign them to.
As you can see there are a lot of possibilities with the pc88 and it will take time and a little patience to truly understand and utilize it’s power and flexibility. Even so, the inexperienced user should be able to set up splits, layers, and custom controller assignments with relative ease by reffering back to this info until it is commited to memory.
