Paxman: England’s finest horns
Initially founded in 1919 by Harry, Bertram, and William Paxman, Paxman began as a brass, woodwind, and percussion instrument supply company that, over the course of the next century, emerged as the premier horn manufacturer for musicians worldwide. It wasn’t until 1945 that the company focused solely on horn production. At that time, the decision to concentrate on developing a large bore, rotary valve horn challenged the narrow bore standard set by players like Dennis Brain while appealing to the growing influence of German players like Friedrich Adolf Borsdorf and Franz Friedrich Paersch. Paxman spent the remainder of the 20th century revising and expanding its range of horns to include unique Bb/F alto and triple horns. By 2008, Paxman introduced the Academy horn, a value-packed instrument that has since become one of the most popular intermediate horns among players across the globe.
