A Modern-day Maestro’s “More Is More” Dirt Box

When one considers the idea of an official shredder’s hall of fame, Yngwie Malmsteen would likely be the first to be enshrined. After all, he essentially established the neoclassical shred lexicon single-handedly. With the MXR Yngwie Malmsteen Overdrive, you can now shape your tone to match the sound and energy of the innovative Swedish guitarist. Armed with a simple 2-knob layout and voiced specifically for virtuosic fretboard gymnastics, this pedal will boost every nuance of your playing for superior clarity, expressive dynamics, and rich harmonics. That’s not to say that the Yngwie Malmsteen Overdrive is a one-trick pony; even minor adjustments will have a profound impact on your tone. Players searching for a potent powertrain for their neoclassical shred engine will find that the Yngwie Malmsteen Overdrive adds just the right amount of combustion to their metal-flavored crunch.

Two knobs deliver endless sonic variations

At first glance, the Yngwie Malmsteen Overdrive looks pretty simple, thanks to its layout. But, as any seasoned drive pedal aficionado will tell you, you can do a lot with two knobs, especially when you pair them with an already-distorted amplifier. The YJM Overdrive’s Level knob ranges from a subtle whisper to a full-bore output that really kicks the front end of your amplifier in the teeth. The Gain knob ranges from barely-there grit to an authoritative dirty boost that’s guaranteed to add muscle to your leads and riffs. Here at Sweetwater, we’ve found that — in true Yngwie fashion — diming both control knobs adds laser-focused precision to your rapid-fire sweep arpeggios, lightspeed alternate picking, and greased-lightning legato runs.

Yngwie Malmsteen rocks the stage at Sweetwater's GearFest!

Reviews

my force is rising
very cool pedal.. pairs perfectly with a hot stacked singlecoil, i've been using my yjm strat with it and it nails the maestros sound. tone is awesome thru a natural bright marshall but really shines with a high gain setting and both knobs at 10

MXR Yngwie Overdrive
Super cool pedal!!! The first thing I noticed was my ability to rip through arpeggio runs way more is more faster. My hair immediately grew back and all my belongings turned into Fender Stratocasters. It's definitely one of my favorite pedals now!!! Thank you to Jeff and everyone at Sweetwater
Music background: Technical Death Metal
The one
I have a lot of distortion and overdrive pedal over the years. I even have the original MXR distortion+. I have been playing guitar since 1985. I half to give Yngwie props, this is the best overdrive pedal I own. I am a gear guy so I appreciate good sounding product. Of course the quality is MXR, that means bullet proof. So if you like high controllable gain this is the pedal for you. I do not find myself using my EVH Overdrive much anymore.
Great pedal
This pedal is really good for neoclassical through a Marshall.
Music background: Working musician
Does what it's supposed to do
This pedal is a great OD, and definitely what you need for that Yngwie tone, but it still 110% needs a noise gate after it, as it's very VERY noisy without one, which is why I removed half a star. I put a Boss NS-2 after it like I've done with my DOD308, and it works perfectly.

I didn't buy mine at Sweetwater because I was offered a price on one I couldn't pass up.....but you definitely should!
