Feel the Power with Mike Watt's Signature Reverend Bass

Greatness takes time — just look at this collaboration between Reverend Guitars and legendary punk bassist Mike Watt! The signature Wattplower MKII bass takes all the specs, bells, and whistles of the original Wattplower and adds a new pickup configuration for extra tone options. The result? A sleek, responsive electric bass with an absolutely killer look. Reverend crafted the Wattplower MKII’s body from 100% korina, a tonewood choice that’s universally lauded for its incredible resonance and sonic properties, which include upfront midrange, snappy treble, and low-end fundamentals. Meanwhile, the Wattplower MKII's pickup combo was designed for diverse tonal control and huge tone minus the hum, with a P-style 2-way, 3-blade bridge pickup and a Rio Grande Pitbull humbucker neck pickup. From chill grooves to funky, punky attacks, the Wattplower MKII’s energetic design is a blast to explore and behold.

Huge array of tones on tap

Mike Watt’s aggressive, funk-inspired play and positive attitude are legendary in the punk underground. On the Minutemen's classic 1984 LP, Double Nickels on the Dime, listeners can hear the jubilant, percussive attack Watt employs. To tap that distinct tone, Reverend outfitted the Wattplower MKII with custom P-blade pickups. The Mark II Wattplower features a versatile 3-tier P-blade configuration with two different voicings (bridge-biased or neck-biased with the center blade is always engaged) for classic P-style tone with a bump in volume, sustain, clarity, and an extended low-end response. The Mark II also adds one Rio Grande Pitbull in the neck pickup position. The Rio Grande Pitbull is a slightly lower-volume pickup with focused midrange that is ideal for when you want to lay back a bit with a more subtle groove. Plus, Reverend and Mike selected ceramic magnets and 43-gauge wire for the Wattplower MKII’s pickup design, a choice that keeps buzzy hum out of your riffs and grooves!

Two-way bridge provides sonic options

Mike Watt prefers tight, even string spacing for accommodating his aggressive articulations and funky attack. To meet this need, the R&D team settled on a Hipshot A Style bridge that’s custom modified for use as either a string-through-body or top-loader. Choose string-through for slightly more sustain or change course with a top-loading setup for faster attack and response. The Hipshot bridge is an enduring favorite among bass players here at Sweetwater!

Dynamite bells and whistles

The Wattplower MKII blends bold playability with sharp looks and features that take bass playing to new heights. A spunky double-cutaway body grants easy access to all 21 frets — an absolute must for expressive players — while the custom ultra-reinforced front-mounted input jack, Luminlay neck dots, and retro-styled volume/tone controls make gear management easy onstage or off. Finally, you’ll appreciate the toned-down Reverend pickguard that shows off more of this bass guitar’s beautiful finish, which is accentuated by bold one-of-a-kind anchor and Wattplower inlays on the first and 19th frets.

Reverend Guitars Mike Watt Wattplower MKII Features:

  • Signature 4-string bass designed in full collaboration with Mike Watt
  • Balanced, lightweight build: a solid korina body and a 3-piece korina neck

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items

Reviews

Watt you say?
Excellent short scale thumper. Near limitless tonal options with the 3-way switch and pickup. Sustaaaaaaaaain. I can pluck an E, walk around the block, and it's still ringing out. The Root Beer sparkle finish is an eye grabber. Never had so many ladies come up to ask about a bass ("It's so sparkly!") in 30+ years of performing. Love this instrument, every thing I wanted in a short scale bass. Included pic is with an SG to show how small the Wattplower is. It's my go-to performing bass now.

Short Scale Massive Sound
I've been drooling over this bass for two years. After reading every review I could find I finally was able to get the funds together. I'm happy to say, expectations exceeded! The craftsmanship on this instrument is unmatched. There are absolutely no flaws in fit or finish. The pictures do not do the root beer sparkle finish justice. The pickup options give such a wide variety of sounds, you'll never get bored. The short scale is unbelievably easy to play. Reverend knocked it out of the park.

The Sweetwater team was absolutely fantastic to work with as usual. Top notch from beginning to end. I can't thank you all enough. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!
Unique, well built, useful
I had been intrigued by this bass ever since Reverend released the Wattplower Mk 1. I play in a cover band 60's-> 2010's music and need a versatile bass. After shoulder problems cropped up, I made the switch to short scale basses. A Serek Sacramento takes care of my Rickenbacker needs, so I was looking for a short scale P-bass sound. I tried a Fender Mustang Pj but it had some issue: the neck is thin side-to-side but the back of it is very round and feels weird, like a tiny baseball bat. plus the P pickup is twice as loud as the J pickup which sounds anemic. Enter the Wattplower II.
This thing has such an aggressive P-sound, which can be tamed (somewhat) with the tone control. In a guitar/bass/drums trio, the extra oomph is exactly what I need. Position one one the pickup selector is hard to distinguish from position two, which is curious. Position 3,the "mudbucker" pickup, is not muddy at all! It has slightly less output than the triple bladed P pickup. The finish is root beer sparkle, not the coolest (which would have been the green or reddish orange colors, hard to find). The neck on the Wattplower is just the right width and radius. If you want a short scale bass that nails the P-bass sound, this is the one! Shout out to the ever helpful David Hess for finding this bass for me
