Dark No More: The VR2 Brings Ribbon Mics into the Light

Think all ribbon microphones sound dark? Think again — sE Electronics is changing the game. Engineered with cutting-edge technology, the VR2 defies expectations with an impressive frequency response of 20Hz to 18kHz — a feat rarely attained by ribbon mics, especially in this class. The result? A remarkably detailed, open, and natural sound that shines across a wide range of sources: vocals, drum overheads, room ambience, acoustic instruments, electric guitar amps, orchestral strings, piano, woodwinds, brass — you name it. The VR2 handles it all with finesse. At the heart of the VR2 lies a hand-tensioned ribbon, meticulously crafted by sE's expert technicians. Meanwhile, active circuitry adds extra output, certifying stellar results with any preamp. It's housed in a rugged all-metal chassis, equipped with a gold-plated XLR connector for reliable, high-quality signal transmission. Additionally, you get a custom shockmount, ensuring optimal placement in any recording scenario, and an elegant wooden storage box. Every studio needs at least one ribbon mic, and with the sE Electronics VR2 in your arsenal, you'll bring everything from delicate violins to powerful vocals right to the front of the mix.

Advanced electronics for full-frequency response

The VR2 defies ribbon mic expectations. While traditional ribbon microphones are celebrated for their warm, vintage tone, they can fall short in capturing high-end detail. This is certainly not the case with the VR2. Engineered with cutting-edge electronics by the dedicated team at sE Electronics, this microphone delivers a full-spectrum response from 20Hz to 18kHz, capturing every nuance with stunning clarity. Moreover, its impressive 135dB maximum SPL handling makes it ideal for high-volume sources, such as overdriven guitar amps. In essence, the VR2 combines the articulate precision of a top-tier condenser with the signature smoothness only a ribbon can provide.

Versatile design meets rugged durability

Every detail of the VR2 was designed with one goal in mind: capturing sound with stunning clarity, warmth, and realism. The sE Electronics VR2 features a flat, round-edged chassis and comes with a custom suspension shockmount that allows for precise mic placement. Whether you center it in the mount, flip it flush against a drumhead or guitar cabinet, or angle it into the heart of a kick drum, the VR2 adapts effortlessly to your application. Beyond that, its compact form factor fits into tight spaces with ease, while the robust all-metal housing ensures it can withstand the rigors of both studio sessions and life on the road.

Reviews

Amazing!
Words cannot describe how beautiful this makes everything sound. It's great on my voice and acoustic guitars and percussion. There's plenty of detail there, but there's this velvety warm smoothness. Thats the best I can do describing it. The preamp is great too, plenty of gain, so it's more flexible to hookup anywhere without extra preamps. Best music purchase I've made in a long time. Thanks Bryan!

Best Purchase Ever
I ordered and received the VR2 three months ago. It might as well have not come with the wooden storage box, since it hasn't been off the mic stand since. I've been using it to mic guitar cabs, acoustic guitars, and vocals. It's more honest and got less of its own coloration than any other mic I have currently. Thanks to Zach for confirming this was the right way to go

Great on Guitar Cabs and Vocals
I called up and talked to my guy, Kingsley, about getting a better ribbon mic for my guitar cabs and possible vocal use as well. I was looking at some of the more expensive offerings to replace a couple of fairly inexpensive mics I have been using. He steered me into this mic, and as a bonus he was able to give me a nice discount since it was the last day of "mic month"

I got it and was impressed by the weight. Though it's not larger than my other mics, it weighs significantly more and seems to be very well made. Even though guitar was my main use for this, I decided to fire it up on a vocal and doubled a track that I had recorded with my KSM44a to see how it would sound. It really held its own against the KSM and had most of the detail with a really nice character to the lower mids and naturally somewhat softer highs. I ended up syncing the tracks with Vocalign and mix the VR2 in about 4 db lower and it sounds like one voice, with a nice mix of that mid character that I love in this mic along with the clarity and detail of the KSM44a. I think I'll be doing that often,

Next I put it on the guitar cab. I have a Kruse modded Marshall DSL into a Mather cab with V30s and T75s in a crisscross pattern, With the old mic I had the ribbon a bit over a foot away and found a sweet spot pointed at one of the V30s and had an e906 on the other V30 about 2 to 3 inches away. It sounded pretty good, but I wanted to try a better ribbon. I placed this in a similar spot and it didn't immediately sound great. I had the amp louder for one thing, and there was some proximity at that range, and it wasn't allowing the highs to really come through. I started moving the mic back further, and once I got to about 3 feet, it really opened up and sounded amazing. At that distance I was able to put the mid more centered to the cab and pick up a great mix of all four speakers. I still blend in the e906, but I have to say this is by far the best guitar tone I have ever gotten in a recording. As soon as I submit this review I'm going to get things set up and do a few more tracks that I thought were "finished" with the old mic. LOL

Sounds great on my 3/4 Upright.
The proximity effect with this mic is pretty dramatic - and that's actually a good thing. One needs to experiment a lot with mic placement, but once you find a sweet spot, this mic really delivers.

What earns it five stars for me is that it is a ribbon that provides expected warmth, but also picks up mid-range frequencies from my bass and it does so in a live trio setting. I'd tried other dynamic and condenser mics, but this is the best one yet.

I am using the Reflexion Filter Pro to "block" the back-side of the figure-8 pattern with the other two musicians at approximately 45 degrees to the left and right (drums and various reed instruments). I'm also using a folded shipping blanket to cover the top "U-shape" of the Relexion Filter Pro to further block room reflections. The sound of this mic is very natural. I've also used it on Alto Sax, flute, clarinet and bass clarinet with success. It sounds amazing on bass clarinet. I'd love to try a pair on grand piano.

I got the active version because I wanted to avoid accidentally blowing out the mic by accidentally activating phantom power.

TBH, I'd love to have at least three more of these mics in my collection. For the price point, it's a steal and great value. sE Electronics is really shaking up the microphone industry with their innovative products.

sE Ribbon Mics Sound Great
sE makes ribbon microphones that sound wonderful. Their Voodoo models have a natural relaxed sound quality that LDC's don't achieve. This VR2 active model is a strange looking creature but when you mic a vocal or a guitar amp with it the sound is all natural, full with none of the high frequency roughness you experience in so many microphones. The inbuilt active electronics make this ribbon easy to use and assure you of no damage from phantom power. The VR2 has smooth frequency response that extends to 18K so you don't get the annoying roll off provided by many ribbon microphones. The build quality is also fantastic and it comes with a nice storage box. It's a great microphone, unique and excellent sounding.

Good Music To You!
