SSL 500 Series Mic Pre with a Twist

The Solid State Logic VHD Pre is an incredibly versatile 500 Series mic preamp that delivers ultra-clean SSL SuperAnalogue-grade sound - with a twist. It's outfitted with SSL's Variable Harmonic Drive (VHD) system. As you increase VHD input gain, the VHD process introduces either 2nd or 3rd-order harmonic distortion (or a blend of the two). At lower gain settings it adds gentle valve-like warmth or a touch of edge. As you increase gain, the more extreme the distortion becomes, all the way to trashed-transistor grunge. At Sweetwater, Solid State Logic gear has holy-grail status. Audition the VHD Pre, and you'll agree.

Something Different for Vox

As a vocalist my main vocal chain is a telefunkin ak47 mkii through a Neve board/preamp and then through an 1176. However, if you are looking for that vocal with a bit of grit and distortion with clarity, look no further. The only downside is you better be certain and commit to the sound, re-routing doesn't seem to capture the same tone and feel as singing directly through it. But this is an awesome tool in my arsenal to use when the song calls for it.

SSL solidly surreptitious.

This is a good unit. Make that a very good unit. It IS clean if you're docile with the input controls. However, you choose to drive it like SSL is really know for (re-synthesizing the line during and after ..) then you're going to get quite the response from this lil' PCB micro machine. It doesn't weigh much ! I'd say 1.4 lbs soaking ...wait..wait..horrible euphemism regarding audio gear. Search that ! Ok, this doesn't weigh hardly anything. Currently, it's sitting next to an HA 73Jr, which, comically, weighs about as much as a Ford F-250. {{{Ka-CHUNK}}}. I've found that slamming the input and experimenting with the VHD is what brings the SSL to life. Throw a Shure LDC in front of a 12 string acoustic, hit the VHD @ about 2 o'clock ... And voila you're a street fighting man in sleepy London. It's a very cool unit. Very rock n roll. Very quick sounding. Uniquely voiced. Kudos ! Ps, be a little trepdatious when mounting this into your 500 lunchbox; only 1073's chunk with authority. This does not. Easy. Does. It.

Very happy with mine

Got it and happy with the clean headroom and VHD does make nice touch. You can bypass the VHD if you just want ultra clean but I almost always record with 2nd harmonic and a slight gain push. It really does add a bit of "hair" to my sound and the fully sweepable LP is a pretty rare feature at this price point (really helped me to close the deal on this pre). Only had it for a few months but the acoustic guitars I'v recorded so far are pretty **** clean sounding. I have an AT4033CL mic and the VHD helps me to get closer to that transformer grit. I didn't give it a 5 star cause I simply got what I expected, no more. (which is great!) but not more than I expected which would make me go WOW. I think that for the price, it's a no brainer. Recommend!
