Vertex Buffers: Tone Preservation at its Finest

Every guitarist at Sweetwater knows what it's like to try and track down that elusive perfect guitar and amp tone combination. When you do find it, that's why preserving your sound in your effects chain should be a priority, which is where Vertex Effects comes into play. Their Pedalboard Buffer Interface is your ideal solution for drastically reducing capacitance across your board, preventing high-end loss and keeping your carefully crafted tone in the spotlight, no matter your pedal configuration. This versatile unit incorporates proper buffering with the most common pedalboard setups including: mono, stereo, 4-cable method (amp with FX loop), 5-cable method (stereo amps with FX loops), wet/dry, and wet/dry/wet signals. Handcrafted by Vertex's devoted technicians in Lancaster, Calif., the Pedalboard Buffer Interface includes four total buffers. Rest assured: with this interface in tow, it will be easier than ever to outfit your pedalboard with a high-quality buffer that will keep your tone at the forefront.

Note: This version of the Pedalboard Buffer Interface is mountable onto a Vertex Pedalboard as a module, and is compatible with all models of the MKII Vertex Pedalboard. Contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer if you have any questions.

Four-buffer design welcomes multi-amp setups

The Pedalboard Interface Buffer module contains an impressive four internal buffers: input buffer, separate left and right output buffers, and a third output buffer for FX return. Additionally, the interface includes a galvanically isolated output with an isolation transformer (on the right output), which effectively removes ground loops for when you're using a multi-amp setup. And Vertex's polarity switch goes a step further, ensuring that all of your amplifiers are functioning in phase with each other so that your tones and effects project evenly across your setup.

Convenient pedal cooperation with low-output impedance

If you're using pedals that are sensitive to impedance, such as vintage fuzzes and treble boosters, the FX Send becomes incredibly useful as a passive, non-buffered input into the system. You can collect the input buffer by patching it in after the pedals that don't get along with the buffers. Each individual buffer inside the Pedalboard Interface Buffer has a 1M ohm input impedance, which is the industry standard for both tube and solid state amplifiers — Vertex is essentially matching the guitar loading the same way as it would be plugged into an amp. And the extremely low output impedance of 100 ohms can drive over 100 feet of high-capacitance guitar cable with absolutely zero changes to your tone!

Vertex Effects Pedalboard Buffer Interface Features:

  • Reduces capacitance across your pedalboard, prevents high-end loss and preserves your carefully crafted tone
  • Incorporates proper buffering with the most common pedalboard types: mono, stereo, 4-cable method (amp with FX loop), 5-cable method (stereo amps with FX loops), wet/dry, and wet/dry/wet signals
  • Module houses 4 internal buffers: input, output left, output right, and output FX return
  • Galvanically isolated output with isolation transformer removes ground loops in multi-amp setups
  • Polarity switch ensures your amps are running in phase
  • FX Send functions as a passive input, offering cooperation with impedance sensitive pedals in your effects chain
  • Industry standard 1M ohm input impedance and extremely low 100 ohm output impedance allows over 100 feet of high-capacitance cabling with no tone loss

Reviews

Worth the wait!
As some reviewers said before it took a while to get here but I get it with supply chain issues and this is certainly not unique to this product. This buffer module worked great and solved the space issues and tone issues I had with other commercial buffers. Mine also had missing hardware screws but Vertex mailed them to me the day I received the buffer and brought it to their attention. I'm already planning to buy another one for another one of my pedalboards.
Vertex Buffer Module
Works nicely if you have a Vertex Pedal Board. Good Match if you don't already have a Buffer or need one.
Bad Batch
Appears I wasn't the only one who was missing the installation screws. Sweetwater got them to me overnight. The module doesn't fit when just installing it. The casing is too tall. If you unscrew the screws under the board that attach the riser a turn or turn and a half the module fits then re-tighten the board/riser screws.

BUT mine is not currently passing signal from the input to the output on the other side. I've tested multiple cables and tested plugin a cable straight into the first pedal in my chain with no issues. The FX loop I/o jacks seem to be working just fine.

Updating my ticket with Sweetwater shortly.

Once the input jack is working this will be a great piece of gear. I wish they and hope they will make one with Midi I/o so I can cleanly route all my cabling including midi to and from my PBC6x

Buffer works great but doesn't fit in the pedal board
The Vertex effects pedal board is not a cheap pedal board and this was not a cheap buffer. Very dissapointed. The buffer works very well but I waited almost 7 months for it and when it finally arrived it was missing the hardware to install it. Fastforward 3 more weeks and the hardware arrived. I then tried to install it and it doesn't fit, I think there was an error in the machining because the screw holes DO NOT line up like the other side did with the power outlet. I'll include a pic of the power outlet where there is space between the screw, this once fits as it should. The buffer side does not because it is pegged against the screw so tightly that it cant fit.
Great buffer, poorly laid out and labeled.
First things first, the buffers are well designed and the box is compact. So functionality it is a good product. However as an audio engineer, the layout and labeling of the jacks is absolutely asinine. Although they are labeled as: guitar, send, return, and left and right out, which would be a perfectly logical layout for common signal flow needs, they are not labeled correctly. The "send" is actually a return, and the return is a send. So they are physically backwards and labeled in an unnecessarily backwards and confusing manor.
