Reviews

BEST MPC EVER!!
I bought this mpc after reading reviews and listening to it on YouTube. Didn't like most of what l heard. However, l did find one exceptional!! Having said that: l find it very versatile and incredibly satisfyingly easy to play!! You can play it lightly or add the lung pressure and wow!! Never heard anything like it ever!! So happy l purchased it from Sweetwater's!! I will warn you that if you don't have the chops and lung power you will find it average but easy to play!! I will be using this moc for at least 95% of my work!! : )
Loud and Rich Sound
I must prefix this review by stating that this is my second Jumbo Java mouthpiece. The first one was the regular black A45 that I bought 12 years ago, and it was amazing, I haven't used anything else since on my alto. When it reached the end of its lifespan (really me just wanting the blue one) I had to pick this up.

ACTUAL REVIEW
This mouthpiece is as close to a metal mouthpiece as you can get without buying a metal mouthpiece, it has a large barrel and small chamber with an open tip for a loud, rich, bright sound. Then pairing it with Legere Alto Saxophone American Cut Reed 3.25 and the Vandoren Optimum Series Ligature on an Allora Chicago Jazz Alto gives me a very modern and responsive sound. This mouthpiece is perfect for playing with bands that have electric instruments and amps so you're able to cut through and stand out, but when needed you can also play soft and gentle as well. I find that this is a lot more versatile than a standard metal or ebonite mouthpiece. If you're looking to upgrade to something that is both bright and punchy with a lot of projection with a solid tone, I highly recommend this mouthpiece!
the best hard rubber mouthpiece i’ve played
no comment, just buy it, won't be wrong. sweetwater stuffs are very professional, and even free shipping thats something i wasn't expecting. best instrument purchase experience ever
Best mouthpiece at any price!

Thank you Vandoren. You've given us one of the greatest mouthpiece ever made at a very fair price! So many of these new mouthpiece makers charge $ for snake oil mouthpieces. They Do not even sound as good as this mouthpiece! I've tries them all -durga, superjet, mindi abair, verdot, drake sanborn, bellite, arb...all fine mouthpieces but not as good as this one!

What makes this mpc so great is it gives you the best of metal with a smoother fuller tone of hard rubber. Tremendous altissimo, Don't mistake this for lack of edge and cut. It's just a thick deep sound. Not thin like so many others. Plays great and pairs well with a green java 2.5-3 reed.

The blue and black color jumbo javas play the same, however as many have noted, the blue ones don't smell like burning tires if they get hot or left out long period of times. They fade slightly lighter blue over time (black can fade brown) but as I stated don't developed the stinky rubber smell. Worth a few extra dollars for this alone.

Bright and punchy
I cannot say if this is like those vintage Blue Jumbo Javas, but this mouthpiece definitely adds a great punchy texture to my sound. I play this piece with a Vandoren Optimum ligature, Boston Sax Shop 2.5 reeds, on my Bettersax Alto. I was looking for something that gave me a similar feel to my Lakey 6*3. I think the Lakey has a little bit more bottom end, but I still consider this Blue Jumbo Java a step up from the Lakey because it feels more consistent throughout the registers of the saxophone. I can manipulate the sound fairly easily with this piece and still retain the same general timbre in all registers. It definitely can cut through a band, and altissimo is very accessible. Some might say that it sounds wimpy at softer volumes, but I think if you can maintain a good airflow, this "wimpy" characteristic becomes moot. But like I said, the Lakey tends to have a better lower end sound than this Blue Jumbo Java, and thats why it gets 4 stars.

This piece lends itself to a more aggressive approach like fusion, funk and maybe even some smooth jazz. It is definitely very high energy, and if you tend to play a little more reserved, then this piece may not be for you. I do wish that there were other tip openings available, but I think at A45, it can be very forgiving to a weaker embochure like mine can be because I tend to have playing gaps throughout the year. It can probably pair well with a 3 strength reed, but for me, a 2.5 strength is a very flexible and forgiving pairing. If you can find a good deal on this piece, it can be a very good upgrade to other similar setups.
