Otherworldly Synth Tones from Your Guitar

Electro-Harmonix's (EHX) original Superego Synth Pedal offers guitarists the ability to sustain notes and chords indefinitely, creating beautiful and surreal soundscapes. With the introduction of the Superego Plus, EHX is taking it to a whole new level. Eleven onboard effects — including Trem, Phase, and Filter — can be independently switched on to add new levels of depth to your synth-like sound. And the parameters are controllable via an optional expression pedal. When you want your guitar to sound like anything but a guitar, check out the EHX Superego Plus from Sweetwater.

Synth-like effects from your guitar

The Electro-Harmonix Superego Plus uses a sample-and-hold circuit to grab a snippet of your guitar's signal and sustains it to create a pad-like cloud of sound. To get the most out of the Superego Plus, you'll want to explore the three operation modes. Momentary mode means the effect is only active when you step on the footswitch, perfect for sustaining the last note of your solo. Latch mode sustains anything you play while holding down the footswitch but continues sustaining until you turn the effect back off. And finally, there's Auto mode, which transforms whatever you play into an entirely new sound.

11 footswitchable effects

An addition to the Superego Plus synth pedal is the Effect knob, allowing you to select between 11 onboard effects. Want the ambient tones of a long delay? It's in there. Or maybe you want to venture further out by adding a thick flange to your sonic bed of sound. No problem. You'll be amazed at how much control the pedal's Rate and Depth knobs offer over the effects, allowing you to dial them to taste. And a simple stomp of the Effect button pulls them from your signal, returning to an unaffected tone on the fly.

Built-in effects loops

Want even more effects options from your Superego Plus? Then you'll love that it has a built-in effects loop. Use this to add yet another sonic dimension to your tone by inserting any type of modulation, dirt, or time-based effects pedal into the Superego's signal. Whatever effects you add to the Superego Plus's effects loop will only process the wet signal of the Superego, which means you can create custom sound effects that wouldn't be possible with a single input and output.

Electro-Harmonix Superego Plus Synthesizer Pedal Features:

  • Sample-and-hold guitar effects pedal creates synthesizer-like sounds
  • 3 different operation modes give you 3 very different playing experiences
  • Controllable glissando lets you "slide" between notes
  • Infinite sustain for notes and chords
  • Latch mode allows you to record layers of sound and play over them
  • Built-in effects loop lets you add additional effects to the Superego's wet sound
  • 11 footswitchable, onboard effects with controls for Rate and Depth

Reviews

Many capabilities and a fun pedal to own.
Originally bought the SuperEgo+ to sustain a basic sound over which I can noodle and practice. While not yet being a good enough player to utilize a Looper pedal, this SuperEgo+ will continuously play any note, chord (or multiple layers of them) strummed into it while I go make a grilled cheese sandwich - and still be playing that sound when I get back from lunch.

There are numerous sustain combinations and effects possible. As a normally "clean" player who has connected the pedal on a tabletop in order to learn its many functions while stepping through the 10 knobs and 3 switches explained in the owner's manual, I've tried attack/gliss/layer/decay/etc. adjustments through the 3 sustain modes, gotten (happily) lost during practice sittings tweaking the effects knobs with their wide range of modulations (even an up/down octave circuit), and have enjoyed finding how many different sounds a single guitar/pedal combo can make. Even choosing one effect without any sustain can bring new life to an everyday practice session. There are so many options to mess around with on this pedal, it's going to be hard to ever move it from waist level to the floor. It made me devise a "pedal table" (a shelf on my stereo rack) near the amp so I don't have to squat down to make adjustments. This pedal is pretty much endless if one is in the mood to goof around with all the settings.

The only downside I've noticed is the very thin wire used to connect the (included) power plug to the wall socket transformer. It's the very thin type of cord used on an antenna cable of a radio I own...the kind that makes a person wonder "How long will this scrawny wire hold up? I better not accidentally let it get twisted or pulled on." However, I do think it says a ton about the EHX brand that they INCLUDE a power supply with the pedal at all. If they were to use a normal gauge electric cord such as found on can openers or lamps, I'd be writing that everything is built sturdily. I haven't noticed anything substandard with construction of the pedal box, knobs or functions. Additionally, this thin power cord wire concern will become moot once the pedal is eventually mounted in a brick-powered pedal board. Then I'll have this spare power plug available if needed for another stand-alone pedal or the guitar workbench. I do commend EHX for providing a power supply with the pedal. All brands should do it.

The EHX SuperEgo+ can easily be recommended to other players looking for an unlimited sustain pedal from a solid manufacturer in the USA. Plan to enjoy lots of tweaking as you locate your preferred amount of sustained layers along with tons of effects options!

Superego+
This pedal is awesome! I was able to get it up and running right away. The manual had some recommendations for sound effects which helped my comfort level. The manual was a little thin - only 12 pages but I found plenty of detailed YouTube video demos and reviews that helped me find amazing sounds. Sweetwater service was outstanding!

Superego Plus - it can have 22 presets too
I haven't gotten my pedal yet to verify it, but by thinking a little "out of the box", it looks like you can have as many as 22 preset memories in the Superego Plus - two presets for each EFFECT channel.

If the owners manual is correct, then by using the EXPRESSION pedal's "SNAPSHOT" feature,
a "HEEL DOWN" snapshot [1] saves the setting levels of the seven control knobs, and the "TOE DOWN" snapshot [2] will capture and save a whole different set of setting levels on the seven control knobs = 2 saved memory preset positions.

This feature was intended as a way for the expression pedal to "SWEEP" between to different level settings on each EFFECT, but this ALSO means that you can use the expression pedal as a "HEEL DOWN" [a] and "TOE DOWN"[b] "A/B switch" to go between TWO different saved settings on all 11 EFFECTS which equals a total of 22 presets.

- I love the idea of having saved favorite settings in this unit!! But I will verify and edit this review when I know for sure ;-)

LOVE THIS UNIT - SOOOO expressive for LIVE worship and church music applications, and makes almost infinite pallet for ethereal and layering sounds!

5 STARS * * * * *
Just buy it if ambient and weird is your thing.
Read the other reviews for the EHX Superego (both versions), then buy the one that suits you. I just got it and I'm enthralled buy only my small introduction into what it can do. Perfect for ambient, space, drone, but definitely any musical genre where controllable sustained harmonies and notes are desirable.

For me, it sits perfectly in with the rest of my effects. it's a granular sampler and synthesizer, and it does it well. Getting the Plus (with FX) is the perfect companion to my Eventide H9, which is mostly stuck to one effect at a time, so the extra modulation options are welcome, as well as the nice synth engine.

I can tell one could get very skillful using this device. It really does open thing up for guitarists, though it could work with any tonal instrument. Even voice!

i got a MiniBrute Impact at the same time, but I've been so busy with the Superego I haven't had time to mess around on it much.
