Harness the Classic Tones of an Iconic Strat

The Fender American Vintage '65 Stratocaster captures the essence of an iconic solidbody electric guitar during its mid-sixties "transition" era. Specially voiced single-coil pickups reproduce the trademark Stratocaster tones you'd expect from a real vintage instrument, enhancing the incredibly balanced sound afforded by this Strat's alder body with equal helpings of lows, mids, and highs. Period-correct bridge saddles and tuner spacing, a comfortable C-shaped maple neck with round-laminated rosewood fingerboard, and aged plastic control knobs echo the stylings of a classic Strat. The Fender American Vintage '65 Stratocaster solidbody electric guitar encapsulates the sound and spirit of 1965.

American Vintage Series means period-accurate details

Fender spared no expense in creating the American Vintage Series, and you'll see it in the American Vintage '65 Stratocaster. To make it as vintage-accurate as possible, Fender restored original tooling dies, voiced new pickups, and even reformulated vintage finishes based on actual vintage examples. The guitarists here at Sweetwater can attest to the well-worn-in looks and playability of these excellent instruments.

Why 1965?

1965 was a transitional time for the Stratocaster. It was the year the Strat saw the return of the thicker C-shaped neck, and was also the year that enamel-covered pickup wiring was introduced. This American Vintage '65 Strat boasts all of these, plus a round-laminated rosewood fretboard. Period-correct bridge saddles and tuner spacing, and an aged plastic switch cap and control knobs add to this guitar's vintage styling.

Vintage-style pickups provide classic tone

Fender wouldn't rest until the American Vintage '65 Stratocaster sounded as vintage as it looks, so they got to work developing a special set of pickups specifically for the American Vintage Series. This Strat packs a trio of American Vintage '65 Grey Bottom Strat single-coil pickups, specially wound to period-correct specs and sound. A modern 5-way blade pickup switch yields "in between" tones that weren't legitimately possible in 1965 (an optional 3-way switch is included if you're a stickler for authenticity).

Fender American Vintage '65 Stratocaster Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

1965 Strat RI - Sunburst / Rosewood

Let's be honest, most people likely give the guitar they just bought 5 stars because.....well, it's the guitar they just bought. It also may only be the second or third (if not first) axe ever purchased and the reviewer may not know a lot about build quality assessment, detailing, period correctness (as in RIs like this 65). Being a 30 yr+ player (since 1977) and having owned LOT of quality Fenders, Gibsons, Musicman, Rick, Warwick basses/guitars, I can tell you I have owned exactly TWO basses (Rick 4001 & Fender American Deluxe Jazz) and TWO guitars I would give 5 stars. The guitars were/are 1) a 1990s-build Fender Custom Shop '62RI black/rosewood Strat, & 2) this Vintage '65 sunburst/rosewood. The '65 build quality was spot-on and flawless. Paint is period-correct and exceptionally-vibrant, neck is dead-on dimensionally for 1965 and is Custom Shop quality (amazing fast play). Retro hardware is beautiful and functions as if it were hand-tuned.The '65 PUs are HEAVY; very harmonic. They have a thick, Hendrix-vibe with brilliant, full-bodied chime on Clean and a lot of dark smoke on overdrive (OCD or TS-808; think "Machine Gun" on "Band of Gypsies"). They are no doubt the most vibrant, full-bodied single-coil set I have ever personally heard.Very cool case/candy; everything-plus you would receive in 1965. Both were nicely packaged and comparable to Gibson & Fender Cutom Shop. The Vintage '65 Strat is a truly amazing, well-made professional-grade guitar. If that's what you're after, I highly recommend you give it a try. Thanks again to Ryan Wiltermood with Sweetwater for helping me acquire this gem. Your professionalism, support and friendship is what makes Sweetwater different.Cheers!
