The Next Stage of Nord

Since Hans Nordelius developed the first dynamic-playback digital drum pad in 1983, Nord has remained at the forefront of sonic innovation, handcrafting every keyboard in their Stockholm-based operation while maintaining tradition through meticulous research and design. With the Stage 4 HA73, they’ve once again raised the bar on lightweight stage pianos that retain sonic scope and aural fidelity and provide unmatched nuance and control for dialing in a suite of versatile tones. From FM and Virtual Analog synthesis via the Wave 2 Synth Engine to the doubled sample memory providing even greater quality of their award-winning piano, organ, and EP emulations, the triple-sensor keybed feels every piece of each note. Robust effects can be assigned per layer, with new physical drawbars, LED indicators, and the advanced MIDI control of the Extern mode granting unparalleled control over the Stage 4 HA73’s impressive array of sonic sculpting options, hand-delivering keyboard pros and synthesists alike at Sweetwater an incredible sandbox of music production.

Nuanced sound with expert emulation

In addition to Nord’s award-winning B-3, pipe organ, and Farfisa patches, the Stage 4 HA73 introduces a new B-3 bass mode, in addition to Model 122 Vintage Rotary Speaker modeling that includes standard and close microphone positions. Its doubled sample memory allows for more instruments to be included at even greater fidelity, with a new, enhanced collection of upright, grand, and electric pianos provided via the Nord Piano Library. The powerful Wave 2 Synth Engine plays host to sample-based, Virtual Analog, and FM synthesis modes, as well as a collection of guitars, strings, choirs, and much more that can now be implemented across three independently manageable synth layers. Plus, the already-advanced arpeggiator is outfitted with brand-new gate, polyphonic, and pattern modes to supplement your sound with highly detailed and customizable rhythmic opportunities.

Sculpt and shape your tones

A reimagined panel design is also present with the Stage 4 HA73, armed with physical drawbars and LED faders for each layer. The panel provides plenty of real-time feedback and flexibility in creating, designing, saving, and recalling patches as you need them. The triple-sensor keybed provides lifelike sensitivity with fully weighted keys, offering unparalleled expression across every instrument. New features like the dynamic compression and unison mode are accompanied by a freshly developed variation on their hallmark reverb, delay, amplifier, and modulation effects, including spring, cathedral, and booth reverb, as well as a new spin effect and space delay.

Real-time, reactive control

The Nord Stage 4 HA73 brings physical drawbars and LED indicators to its interface, facilitating reactive design of organ patches and real-time feedback as you dial in your sound. With the new Extern mode, deep and precise MIDI control allows the Stage 4 HA73 to integrate into any arrangement seamlessly. The Tru-Vibrato, Unison, and Round Robin modes have been bolstered with enhanced samples to provide even greater flexibility in cultivating and crafting your sound, with plenty of room for aftertouch.

Nord Stage 4 HA73 Features:

  • Digital stage piano with piano, organ, and synthesizer sound engines
  • Fast, smooth feel from the 73-key fully weighted, triple-sensor keybed
  • 2 OLED displays for Program and Synth sections provide clear navigation and operation

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!

Reviews

Thank You Sweetwater
I'll keep it short. Sweetwater worked with me to ship both the keyboard I wanted and the one I was happy with. Thank you, Matt Lubick.

I've had many good keyboards in the twenty years since I switched from bass to keys. After months of playing on this one I can say the Nord Stage 4 is the best. This board has incredible sounds and dynamics across the acoustics, electrics, organs, and yes - synth. Some keyboards are fabulous at a couple of these, but the Stage 4 is a fully integrated system great at all of these. It's now a go to board in the studio, but the programmability, portability, and effects flexibility make this board a pleasure to use on stage.

I do need to say something about the HA73 weighted keys. This key bed is fast, solid, and responsive. No key bed is perfect for everything; if you want full dynamics and speed for your acoustic/electric pianos versus machine gun B3 percussion - you must compromise somewhere. But with a tilt to toward pianos this key bed comes close to supporting most playing styles. And it just feels great.

Pros:
Studio quality sound in every category - acoustic, electric, organ, synth with plenty of useable programs right out of the box.
Live performance flexibility - great effects that can be applied to voices independently, and physical drawbars on the organ with a very convincing Leslie sim.
Customizability - easy to set up and store new programs in the studio and then recall them quickly on a dark stage.
Superior key bed, solid build
Still haven't run out of memory

Cons:
More mass than I wanted for a 73-key board, but its portable at 37 lbs. without sacrificing key bed quality
Expensive - it's not fragile but recommend getting a good case for loading in/out.
Complex - not sure this is a knock unless you don't want programmability. But the manual is sometimes too vague to get you to your goal. But internet persistence pays off.
Comes in any color you want, as long as it's bright red.
Many, many functions in a single keyboard
Solid good sounding digital keyboard. Strong organ, classic keys, synth, and FX sections. Multiple layers for each kind of sound for great blending and layering. Not too deep a dive with the operating system if one has studied synth programming before. Intuitive controls and layout. Very fliexible midi routing to outboard gear. Solid USB function and computer interface. Only ask would be a second tunable oscillator in the synth section, though the existing single oscillator synth waves include some instances of harmonics, so not a real issue. Solid well built classy rig...
NS4 HA 73 - Perhaps the perfect keyboard?
My first Nord. I've been playing keyboards for 30+ years.

First, you get what you pay for. Everybody complains that these are too expensive. Yes, they're not for everybody. If you just need a midi controller, then you should save $ and just get a good midi controller. But, if you want a keyboard that has simply some of the best pianos that I've ever heard. The sounds are just fantastic (organs, elec pianos, OB pads, etc, etc). Very "playable" patches. Not a bunch of crazy nonsense that you'll never use.

This is one of the few "short" keyboards that has fully weighted keys. If you don't need 88 keys but still want a fully weighted keybed, then this is a fantastic (perhaps the only) option. The keybed feels great. Really fast action with the triple sensor design. It's easy to shift your layers up/down by octaves, so if you want middle-C to be an octave higher...no worries.

Now, for the airplane cockpit control panel. Yup, it looks complicated, but after using it for a couple weeks, this is one of the easiest keyboards to use. No lie. Watch some of YouTube tutorials, and you'll be up and running. Nearly everything you need is at your fingertips. The lights are color-coded to indicate what's happening and which parameters are being controlled. It's easy to understand why every church wants one of these. You can start with piano, and add pads or organ with a single button press. You still get 2 layers (panels for you NS3 guys) with every patch.

I wish it could do USB audio, but beyond that, this might be the closest thing to the perfect keyboard that I've ever owned.
