The Next Stage of Nord

Since Hans Nordelius developed the first dynamic-playback digital drum pad in 1983, Nord has remained at the forefront of sonic innovation, handcrafting every keyboard in their Stockholm-based operation while maintaining tradition through meticulous research and design. With the Stage 4, they’ve once again raised the bar on lightweight stage pianos that retain sonic scope and aural fidelity and provide unmatched nuance and control for dialing in a suite of versatile tones. From FM and Virtual Analog synthesis via the Wave 2 Synth Engine to the doubled sample memory providing even greater quality of their award-winning piano, organ, and EP emulations, the semi-weighted waterfall triple-sensor keybed feels every piece of each note. Robust effects can be assigned per layer, with new physical drawbars, LED indicators, and the advanced MIDI control of the Extern mode granting unparalleled control over the Stage 4’s impressive array of sonic sculpting options, hand-delivering keyboard pros and synthesists alike at Sweetwater an incredible sandbox of music production.

Nuanced sound with expert emulation

In addition to Nord’s award-winning B-3, pipe organ, and Farfisa patches, the Stage 4 introduces a new B-3 bass mode, in addition to Model 122 Vintage Rotary Speaker modeling that includes standard and close microphone positions. Its doubled sample memory allows for more instruments to be included at even greater fidelity, with a new, enhanced collection of upright, grand, and electric pianos provided via the Nord Piano Library. The powerful Wave 2 Synth Engine plays host to sample-based, Virtual Analog, and FM synthesis modes, as well as a collection of guitars, strings, choirs, and much more that can now be implemented across three independently manageable synth layers. Plus, the already-advanced arpeggiator is outfitted with brand-new gate, polyphonic, and pattern modes to supplement your sound with highly detailed and customizable rhythmic opportunities.

Sculpt and shape your tones

A reimagined panel design is also present with the Stage 4, armed with physical drawbars and LED faders for each layer. The panel provides plenty of real-time feedback and flexibility in creating, designing, saving, and recalling patches as you need them. The waterfall triple-sensor keybed provides superlative sensitivity with semi-weighted keys, offering unparalleled expression across every instrument. New features like the dynamic compression and unison mode are accompanied by a freshly developed variation on their hallmark reverb, delay, amplifier, and modulation effects, including spring, cathedral, and booth reverb, as well as a new spin effect and space delay.

Real-time, reactive control

The Nord Stage 4 brings physical drawbars and LED indicators to its interface, facilitating reactive design of organ patches and real-time feedback as you dial in your sound. With the new Extern mode, deep and precise MIDI control allows the Stage 4 to integrate into any arrangement seamlessly. The Tru-Vibrato, Unison, and Round Robin modes have been bolstered with enhanced samples to provide even greater flexibility in cultivating and crafting your sound, with plenty of room for aftertouch.

Reviews

Best Keyboard
I Love this keyboard. It has made my career and music better and so many ways. I love the sounds and different features on my Nord stage 4. The best system ever made for studio use and stage presents.

Perfect Keyboard for my use case
I have several synthesizers. Prophet, Trigon and Sub 37. I wanted to add piano. My Yamaha C-5 is a bit heavy to carry around. When analyzing this problem of what electronic piano to add, I looked at all the specs, YouTube's and forums. Frankly, many reviews, as with the synths, are I am a Ford man and only buy Ford. That is not really a helpful bias. Or I do not like buying things from China. Look my Ipad and Iphone work just fine. And last I heard, no chips are made in the US. China knows how to make things. And they are humans too. So taking all that out, the first key point was weight. Other keyboards have better specs, features and lower cost. But this is 22 lbs. I perform so that is a major issue. I got the 73 because my Bose system (L1) does not get lower. And, I can move the keyboard if there is a system that can handle it. Shorter and lighter. I compared the stage to the electro. The electro is short lighter less expensive but lacks layers and the synth does not have much control. Like I need another synth. But the Stage may replace the need for a Synth for my use. I do sound healing events which is ambient. I work with the stage and the Trigon to cover what I need. It is probably a rare use case but that is my analysis. Also, I felt I did not need the organ. But Nord does not make a power piano power synth only. Then when trying to sort out how to have the synth play a harmonium, I realized, well a harmonium is a reed organ. Bingo, I can use all three panels. That was a bonus. So if mass is an issue, the price is not a concern. Amortize 15 lbs over multiple loads and sort it out.
Music background: Classically trained baritone doing sound healing events.
What a Board!
I sold a Yamaha Motif XF6 on Gear Exchange and an Access Virus Ti v2 Polar to move into this board. It has gorgeous piano, and synth sounds, and full and weighty organ sounds with drawbars and rotary speaker emulation just like the actual Hammonds and Lelise's we used to love & play. It's remarkable how close the Nord Stage 4 gets, and to think we had to cart around big furniture in the past to achieve that kind of sound, lol. I also like that you can adjust the keyboard action with Nord's KB touch and Dyn compression and the built-in effects (chorus, flange, phase, reverb, delay & compression). It all adds up to getting a really nice & finished sound. The only thing missing is a built-in sequencer, but it does have an arpeggiator which is fun to work with. I highly recommend this keyboard and I'm very happy to be working with it!

Upgraded to NORD Stage 4 Compact
Having only had this keyboard for 2.5 weeks it is meeting my expectations in a big way. Coming out of a workstation style board there was a learning curve, but not too steep. This compact model makes only very few compromises ... vis-a-vi weighted action and more flexible split points. But there are so many advantages and work arounds. The weight (

Its a dream!
I like to call it the Mac of keyboards. It just works and works well. No menu diving. Everything at your finger tips. I love it.
