Small Box Amp Tone for Your Pedalboard

With the Friedman Small Box distortion pedal, now you can put the responsive, harmonically rich tone of Friedman's acclaimed Small Box amplifier on your pedalboard. A 2-way gain structure switch offers big tonal versatility: use high-gain mode for searing lead distortion tones, or switch it to the lower-gain mode and dial back the Gain knob for a dirty boost that melds perfectly with your amplifier's front end. The Small Box distortion pedal's punchy, tubelike tone can be shaped for practically any combination of guitar and amplifier with its Bass, Mid, Treble, and Presence controls.

Modded-Plexi tone in a pedal

Friedman's Small Box amplifier is beloved by players for its responsive Plexi-style tone, and the Small Box distortion pedal allows you to inject that sonorous character into your amplifier of choice. Its 2-way gain structure switch works similarly to the two different channels on the Small Box amp, ranging from a subtle dirty boost (perfect for pushing your tube amplifier into the red zone) to full-bore distortion. And with its amp-like EQ and Presence controls, Sweetwater is sure you'll be able to dial in the Small Box distortion pedal with whatever amp and guitar you prefer.

Friedman Small Box Distortion Pedal Features:

  • Overdrive/distortion pedal based on the Small Box amplifier
  • Responsive, harmonically rich tone
  • 2-way gain structure switch lets you choose between a low-gain dirty boost and high-gain distortion
  • Amp-like 3-band EQ and Presence control fine-tune your tone for any application
  • True bypass switching completely removes the circuit from your signal path when disengaged
  • Powered by 9- or 18-volt power supply (sold separately)
What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Reviews

Great rock tones
Really nice, captures the essence of great Marshall JCM800 and hot rodded tones. Performs very well in front of a blackface Fender style clean amp and can also goose up a good Plexi style amp with gain lower, volume higher.
Music background: Semi Pro
Best OD pedal you can buy
Guitarist for over 50ys. I've had every tube amp out there. Some great, most are now somewhere else. I bought this to put in front of an AC15. It was pretty good in that role. Recently, I put it on a board in front of a Little Sister, which is essentially a single channel hot-rodded JCM45. This pedal makes it a two channel amp, and I can get pretty close to JCM 800 tones with it if needed. I had one of those years ago. It reminds me of it when I dime the gain. Down lower it's a great boost, with more tonal control than any drive pedal I've ever owned. I have an original klon that I bought new. I thought I'd never sell it. It hasn't left the house since the mid 90s. This pedal sounds better. Much better. Klon hype.. thought I'd never be able to buy that D-28! Posting the klon..
Friedman Smallbox Pedal
I've been playing guitar for over 60 years and professionally for over 50 and I've been fortunate to have owned many great guitars and amps. I got my first Marshall amp in 1971 when I was 18 -- it was a smallbox mod 1986 (bass) with a checker 4x12B cab. After many years and many amps I can honestly say that my smallbox was the best sounding of them all. The Friedman Smallbox pedal replicates that sound and feel so closely it's hard to believe. Watch the Pete Thorn YouTube review of this pedal and you'll see and hear what I mean. If you're looking for the perfect Marshall in a box pedal trust me -- this is the one!
Music background: 61 years of performing, teaching and recording guitar
"The" Tone
The SmallBox OD is a beautiful amp in a box style pedal. I personally turn the volume knob all the way up and the gain all the way down with a AC30 style amp to get a perfect classic dirt tone. You can get way crazier if you want but I like to push something over the edge. Get one and see what the hype is about
Music background: Classic Punk and Metal
Best Marshall-in-a-box On the Market!
It does everything from gentle breakup to the brown sound!

Chimey, chirpy classic sparkle with more than enough gain.

Seriously— this thing gets you from Van Halen 1 to Aenima. It has to be heard to be believed.
