Quick, Easy Microphone Mute Switch!

The Short Stop represents a name change for the original Pro Co Cough Drop, a passive momentary microphone-muting switch. To operate, the user's microphone cable is plugged into the Short Stop and the Short Stop is plugged into the sound system. If the entertainer has to cough or clear his/her throat, they simply step on the Short Stop's momentary switch. Pressing and holding down the switch mutes the microphone's signal to the sound system for as long as necessary, preventing embarrassing sounds from reaching the audience. Releasing the footswitch (which can be used equally well as a hand-operated unit) allows the entertainer to resume normal communication with the audience. The Short Stop belongs in every engineer's gear bag!

Pro Co Short Stop Microphone Mute Switch Features:
  • Momentary foot switch that allows operator to temporarily mute microphone

Reviews

Works, but noisy
I agree with other reviews. I used this for several years, but every time you press the button, it puts a pop in the audio.

Unacceptable for live work, easy to edit for recordings.

Not particularly impressed with this, but was too expensive to throw out - until it broke after about five years.

Not well thought out
Who makes a microphone mute device with a mechanical button that clicks whenever it's pressed and released? I'd rather have to edit out a cough then some random clicking noise.

Returned.

Has some flaws
Bought this ProCo Short Stop mute switch as a cough button for recording with voice over clients. Im using a Sennheiser 416 condenser mic and an Audient iD22 interface to supply the +48V phantom power to the mic. Not only is the mechanical switch noisy but I get a line pop when engaging and disengaging the switch that is audible as well as in my wave. I opened the "battery door" on the bottom and it is a very simple circuit interrupted by the switch, no resistors or capacitors. Also while running some test I noticed that it has bleed through when muted so its not completely cutting the signal but lowering it. I could hear myself coughing loudly and yelling when the switch was muted. Unfortunately this will not work for my application and will have to return. Hope this helps someone looking for a completely silent mute switch. Whilrwind makes a switch called micmute PX and claims that it is completely silent. It has phantom power on the switch itself to power condenser mics so that it is not sent down the mic cable. That might be the best bet...
