ENGL’s Powerball in a Synergy Preamp Module

In the world of electric guitar amplifiers, ENGL is synonymous with killer high-gain tones. The Synergy Powerball packs channels three and four of one of ENGL’s best-loved amp heads into a high-octane preamp module. Designed in cooperation with Horst Langer of ENGL Amplification, the Powerball module yields a super-thick saturated tone, plus a healthy dose of punch that can go toe-to-toe with the head that inspired it. This all-tube module includes dual Gain and Volume knobs for flexible gain-staging, plus dual 3-band EQs for sculpting your tone to perfection. Dual Gain Lo/Hi switches toggle between crunchy overdrive and full-on distortion, while dual Mid Boost switches enable you to fine-tune the module’s sonic character. If you’re searching for the ultimate metal or hard rock tone, the Synergy Powerball module provides you with a great starting point.

Synergy Amplification

Merriam-Webster defines synergy as, "A mutually advantageous conjunction or compatibility of distinct business participants." With Synergy Amplification's combining of tube-amp talents that includes Dave Friedman (Friedman), Joe Morgan (Morgan), Steven Fryette (Fryette and VHT), Mike Soldano (Soldano), and Peter Diezel (Diezel), the name is a perfect fit. Each product is painstakingly crafted by these titans of the tube-amp world, ensuring every nuance of their legendary amplifiers is translated to your tone. For the most iconic tones in the most convenient package possible, Sweetwater is proud to offer you Synergy Amplification.

Reviews

Synergy ENGL Powerball.
I first started my search for which modules I wanted to start with, the obvious ones for me were the Uberschall and the Ecstasy. So I was kinda thinking lead, 2 chugs and a clean. But I realized I use a wider variety of tones and although I love the Bogners, only 2 rhythm channels wasn't enough. So I searched all the modules again. And chose the Powerball. Because?? It has a lead tone that matches my style- TONS of sustain!! And If you haven't set it up for a clean tone, you are missing out. It's fantastic!! SO: here's thoughts on the current modules I own.
Leads- Powerball
Rhythm- 4 channels of Bogner fury from mellow to face melting chugging!!!
Clean- Powerball
Got a few more modules I'd like to have in my collection.
But what I consider 'needs' my wife thinks are 'wants'
FYI All my recordings utilize IR's recording direct.

Wonderful module
Extremely tight gain and loads of it.
Holy Brutal Tones!
I think I have about 46 amps in my collection and this Synergy Powerball is as much of a monster as my Bogner Uberschall, Fortin Cali, KSR Ares and Mesa Rectifiers are!

mystery of the 3-position cathode switch....
Of course each module has its recommended manufacturer position. The differences are 1) most bass response, 2 and 3 are very close to each other with position 2 being the most open and headroom. Experimenting with these can perhaps tune the modules feel and response more to your touch if it is not quite right for you. Fryette genius chap he is auto sets his so there is no switch on his modules. I hover between 1 and 3 myself, love the Powerball on 1 and the Vai on 3 my two fav modules so far. This stuff is really amazing, will be the best amp rig you have ever had. Big fan of the SYN 50/50 power amp as well.
Music background: heavy fusion mix
just a follow up...cathode switch
Position 1 is the recommended ENGL choice for this module. I wish there was more info on experimenting with these 3 positions as to what exactly they will do. It is very unclear. Great module, still my fav of the ones I have.
