Multimode Mobile Recording and SSL Power — Redux

For more than 50 years, Solid State Logic has remained at the forefront of studio and recording excellence. In the process, the company has established a legacy of large-format consoles and outboard gear that has been honed, refined, and expanded throughout the decades to include industry-leading plug-ins, interfaces, and more. The SSL 2 MKII 2x2 USB-C audio interface distills this engineering prowess into a next-gen, mobility-minded menagerie of state-of-the-art recording possibilities. Studio engineers at Sweetwater are impressed with the SSL 2 MKII’s continued elevation of the bar first raised by its predecessor, expanding its interoperative recording and performance capabilities to suit virtually any studio setup. From its 32-bit/192kHz converters and immaculately balanced monitor outputs to its DC-coupled outputs and audio-detect instrument DI inputs, the SSL 2 MKII is primed to perform well beyond the scope of interfaces in its class. Plus, the lauded Legacy 4K mode returns, letting you capture the magic of SSL’s famed 4000-series console, imbuing your sound with distinctive analog character, all from a single push of a button.

Engineered for interoperative exploration

While the original SSL 2 was an undeniable marriage of sleek, mobile-friendly form factor and legendary recording expertise, the SSL 2 MKII emerges to meet the increasingly diversifying needs of the modern musical landscape, wherein collaboration, instrumentation, and even recording location have vastly expanded configurations. Each preamp hosts a dedicated highpass filter, selectable Line input operation, 48-volt phantom power, and 4K legacy mode, all with a single push of a button. Outputs are DC-coupled, as well, extending your control capabilities to include modular, rackmounted, and standalone synthesizers via CV signals. Front-mounted instrument inputs and rear-mounted combination inputs also facilitate a stereo loopback feature, further augmenting your potential for incorporating external effects and processing.

Crafted for recording and production

SSL’s robust history in large-format consoles conjures an era of studio work that was defined by careful decision-making and real-time collaboration. The SSL 2 MKII masterfully captures that workflow and reimagines it for the contemporary workflow, wherein the convenience and speed of DAWs, plug-ins, and recording reduce the commonplace need for dozens, if not hundreds, of simultaneously available channel strips. Its 2 x 2 architecture, combination jacks, and per-channel controls let you seamlessly move between external configurations of gear and instrumentation, while the SSL MKII’s low-profile form factor and intuitive interfacing offer not just detailed and dynamic connectivity and feedback information but satisfying tactility. Moreover, the SSL 2 MKII features dual high-current headphone outputs, both of which relay the same mix to make back-to-back production and joint studio sessions a breeze in any setting. Plus, its USB 2.0 bus-powered design makes plug-and-play recording a cinch, with compatibility for both Mac and PC machines.

Legacy 4K: instant analog magic

SSL built its reputation on its celebrated large-format consoles, through which countless hit records and Grammy-award-winning albums have flowed. In particular, the SSL 4000 series console has inspired generations of musicians, producers, and engineers with its undeniable analog character. The SSL 2 MKII brings that signature 4000 series sound into your project studio with its Legacy 4K Analog Enhancement Circuit, which, with the push of a button, imparts the preamps with two essential characteristics of the 4000 series signal chain. The first thing you’ll hear is a musical, high-frequency EQ boost that will push your vocal or instrument forward in the soundfield for a deeper, more dimensional sonic profile. Then, you’ll notice a subtle addition of harmonic distortion that sweetens the sound and adds personality to the signal. For small format recording interfaces, there is nothing quite like the Legacy 4K button.

SSL Production Pack: Bundled industry-standard software

Solid State Logic partnered with some of the industry’s leading plug-in purveyors to provide you with a diverse, comprehensive kit of all things virtual, including processors, dynamics tools, instruments, samples, and a DAW. SSL’s own Vocalstrip 2 and Drumstrip plug-ins provide powerful processing tools to enhance your drums and vocals with compressions, expansion, transient shaping, EQs, and more. Further offerings spanning MIxbus 10 and Ableton Live Lite make for a formidable virtual recording foundation, while Sonarworks, Output, Antares, Celemony, Loopcloud, Native Instruments, IK Multimedia, and Slate Digital stand to build the ultimate all-in-one mobile studio.

Huge step up from the M Audio interface!
Plug & play goodness!
The difference between the SSL and the M Audio interface I'd been using is amazing.
Without out all the tech mumbo jumbo, this thing just plain sounds good!
The preamps are clean, but have a lot of muscle to boost any signal.
An additional cool feature is the '4K' buttons that emulate the SSL 4000 series mixers.
SSL includes a boatload of free downloads & hardware discounts on the SSL plugs, etc.
If someone is on the fence about getting one, just do it, you'll be glad you did.

SSL might also stand for Sweet, Superior and Logical.
I have been a long time user of a different Audio Interface for years. I'm not going to name names because I'm not here to bash another company, but my previous 3rd Generation red Interface really didn't like Windows 11 very much, in spite of it's drivers being "Windows 11 compatible." After an hour or so of use, it would start to buzz, or altogether cut out. Even when using it just to play music from my Media player, or to listen to YouTube videos. I wasn't alone in this, because there were all kinds of REDIT posts, Facebook posts, etc., about the exact same problems. The only "solution" people had found was to use a REALLY old driver with it. And while that solution worked, it had its own quirks and issues as well (such as the control app freezing when trying to close it). Anyway, frustrated, I called my sales rep and asked what he would recommend for the price range I was able to spend. He didn't even have to take a second to think about it, and suggested the SSL 2 MK2 line. There are two models of this, the MK2 and the MK2+. The main two differences being 2 or 4 outputs and headphone monitor routing to either of the two SETS of outputs. I only need 2 in my setup, so I went with the Mk2 (non plus). That is the ONLY difference. First thing I loved about this...NO external software app needed to do anything. You can do it ALL right on the front panel of the Interface. And it's easy. The sound quality is GREAT, and best of all....no weird audio glitches like my previous Interface. Oh! And, it's USB powered. I now have a free electrical outlet in my studio. That might not seem like a huge deal...but I actually had a separate line from our circuit box wired directly to my studio because as you know, a good studio setup requires a LOT of power. (Computer, 4 monitors, keyboards, Mixing boards, speakers, external hard drives, lighting, etc.) I have 10 wall jacks, and 2 power strips...and they are ALL full. So now I have one extra plug to find something to plug in, haha.

Anyway, I've been a fan of SSL for quite a while. I have all the WAVES SSL plugins, and my good buddy has SSL equipment in his studio and also recommended this product.

I couldn't be happier.

By far the best in class
I recently got the SSL2 Mk2 interface and all I can say is wow! I'm using an older AT4050 and I thought it sounded fine, but through this interface, I was astonished at how much better it sounds. There is so much more detail and full frequency bandwidth. The bundled plug-ins are great – no junk. I've always wondered what was the big deal with SSL, and now I know. If you are looking for an affordable interface, this is definitely best in class.

Terrific Sound!
With the 4K mode engaged, it sounds very much like the larger SSL consoles!
Grab yours
This is by far my favorite audio interface.
Vocal sounds so beautiful! I wished I bought the one with more input.
If you want to go up from this go for apollo but if budget is your problem get this!
