Amazingly Helpful Piece of Equipment

Let’s be honest, a patchbay is intimidating; the signs flow, the front and back, normal, half normal — it’s a lot to think about. As a hobbyist composer and part time VO actor, it’s not the first piece of hardware I’ve ever purchased. Now that I have one, and spent a little time learning to use it, it’s an incredibly valuable piece of hardware for any studio. Once you realize that the signal flows from top to bottom (like a waterfall), it’s much easier to figure out how to patch things in. This particular one has normal, half normal, and through modes, which some of the others don’t have — and it’s a feature you absolutely need. Plus, the switches are on the front of the panel, which is a very smart design choice and a requirement in my book. Definitely grab some console tape and label your ports like I did (see photos) so you’ll remember what is connected on the back. With a ton of synths and drum machines, I can plug them in to the front for playing them or recording into my DAW, and don’t have to go around the back of the interface or desk and try to plug it in. I can just do it right from the front of the patchbay, and boom — I’m in! Don’t be intimidated like I was — buy this affordable piece of hardware and simplify your musical life.

It was time...

I put off using patchbays for a long time. Finally, I jumped in. What a difference it has made! (Only reason for 4 star) The Samson arrived with 2 of the nuts and washers floating in the sealed bag. After putting them back on and tightening up the others, all is good. Having the norm, 1/2 norm and thru switchable on the front has already proved invaluable. This patchbay seems well built and is very easy to use. I just ordered a 2nd from my rep, the Great Nate!
Music background: I'm an incredible guitar player, melody maker.,and all around great guy. But, I would have to say my greatest attribute is humility.

2 years in... still love it

I bought this to protect my monitors from me having to reach past them since I'm clumsy af. It does so much more than that though... it's one of the best investments I've done for the studio. One of those things you don't know you need until you try one then you know you couldn't live without it

If you have even a few pieces of gear this will come in handy. It's kind of tricky to learn the routing patterns but after you mess with it for a couple days it's easy. There's even a way to duplicate signals with a couple extra patch cables connected on the back

It also saves the life of the jacks on your expensive gear which... shouldn't go bad but we know how that goes

2 years of frequent use and it's still working like a champ. I'm no telephone operator but every jack front and back has seen some action. Everything's as it should be. I didn't even have to tighten up a single jack from the factory lol

A perfect 5/7

Cable confusion solution

I have a steadily growing synth collection that I had patched into a mixer with the outs of the mixer patched to my interface for recording. This worked great until, "My collection is complete!" turned into "OOOOOooooo that synth is cool too!!! I should probably have that..." Having outgrown my mixer I regularly found myself re-patching and forgetting which cable was which, and therefore wasting "precious creative-time". I've labels my cables in the past but found as soon as I did, for one reason or another, I would want to rearrange stuff and then cable lengths and gear placement and blah blah blah....
I do plan on acquiring a larger mixer and some more preamps sooner or later, but this Samson patch bay has cured my cable confusion woes and I can see myself continuing to use it far into the future.
Having everything patched into the S-patch Plus has sped up my workflow significantly and having the normalling switches on the front comes in real handy more frequently than I expected. Thanks to Clint Bransteter for getting this out to me quickly, and for being a fantastic, knowledgeable and helpful guy!!!

Must have!

This is a must have for several reasons. It makes signal routing with outboard gear a breeze. I run an Apollo Twin interface and with only having two mic/line inputs I was having to unplug and reconnect every device I have depending on the task at hand. Now with this patch bay I have everything connected and just have to change the patch cable. Pretty great! It's a time saver for sure!

New to patch bays? Have no idea what half-normal, normal, or thru mode are? There are diagrams on top of the Samson S-Patch Plus that help you learn as you go! Plus, it's simpler than setting up many patchbabys because it provides switches right on the front! Whatever level your experience, the S-Patch Plus will be a huge asset as your studio grows.
