Stereo Recording Made Simple

From lush acoustic guitars to crisp drum overheads, Universal Audio’s SP-1 Pencil Microphone Pair will accurately capture your source in beautiful stereo sound! These small-diaphragm condensers deliver a rounded top-end, boasting an incredible clarity that picks up every nuance of your sound. The SP-1 pair also comes packaged with Hemisphere, an exciting microphone modeling plug-in descended from Sphere that contains five iconic condenser models. UA has also included a wealth of accessories that make the SP-1 pair ready to record right out of the box — audio engineers at Sweetwater especially love the inclusion of a stereo T-bar that makes it easy for even the least experienced users to get a wide stereo capture. Plus, UA’s Apollo SP-1 presets will give you mix-ready results with the click of a button!

Note: The Universal Audio SP-1 pair requires a Universal Audio Apollo audio interface to access Apollo Channel Strip Presets. Please contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer to make sure your interface is compatible.

Get polished results right away

If you’re looking for a way to streamline your recording process, you’ll love Universal Audio’s included selection of Apollo Channel Strip Presets. Use the SP-1 with a compatible Universal Audio Apollo interface, and you get instant access to radio-ready EQ and compression settings for a wide range of sources. Take your production to the next level with UA’s Apollo Channel Strip Presets!

Explore Hemisphere’s virtual mic locker

Included with your new SP-1 microphones, Hemisphere takes the concept of UA’s Sphere software and applies it to cardioid mics. It spans models of five iconic small-diaphragm condensers mics from the world’s most respected manufacturers. Whether you’re looking for vivid overheads or high-definition pickup for an acoustic guitar, Hemisphere has you covered — and then some. Better still, Hemisphere is compatible with every Universal Audio Standard series microphone and includes modeled microphones optimized for the SC-1 large-diaphragm condenser, the SD-1 dynamic mic, and SP-1 pencil condenser.

Included Hemisphere mic models:

  • SD-54: This classic small-diaphragm condenser is a go-to in pro studios and has been used to record such greats as Larry Carlton, Ry Cooder, Yo-Yo Ma, Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell, and Eric Clapton.
  • SD-56: This A side-address condenser features a dual-nickel diaphragm in cardioid mode, coupled with the legendary AC701 tube. Its silky top end and pillowy lows are useful on guitars, grand pianos, vocals, and more.
  • SD-84: This modern cardioid condenser is prized for its detailed top end. It can be found in studios and stages around the globe and has been used by artists such as Anderson .Paak, Mac DeMarco, and Johnny Marr.
  • SD-86: With its back-to-back KM84-type capsules in cardioid mode, this prized condenser delivers crisp top end and mellow midrange — a sound heard on countless Motown classics.
  • SD-451: This modular end-address condenser mic has become an industry mainstay for its forward, bright tone. Its 75Hz and 150Hz low-cut filters make it useful for a wide range of sources, including pianos, snare drum bottoms, and overheads.

Enjoy total control with Hemisphere

There’s more to like about Hemisphere than the larger-than-life microphone models. The plug-in also offers proximity, axis, and filter parameters. The proximity knob virtually increases or decreases the distance of your microphone from the source, so you don’t have to physically move the mic to achieve an optimal sound. Furthermore, the axis control virtually alters the axis at which the mic is placed — an industry first. This control helps tame harsh, unwanted frequencies on your guitar amps, snare drums, and much more. Most importantly, Hemisphere is so powerful that you can change the filter, proximity, and axis controls even after you’re done tracking. Using Hemisphere is the easiest way to get perfect recordings the first time.

Widen your sound

The best part of having a matched pair of SDCs is the incredible amount of clarity, definition, and space you can achieve while stereo recording. However, placement, leveling, and phase issues can add real challenges to any session. To let you get the most out of your SP-1 pair, Universal Audio included a stereo T-bar and two mic stand mounts for easy stereo recording — no matter your experience level! A T-bar allows you to easily place your mics in an XY configuration with just a single mic stand, capturing your sound in stunning stereo with minimal effort.

Universal Audio SP-1 Pencil Microphone Pair Features:

  • Includes a matched pair of SP-1 small diaphragm condenser microphones for high-fidelity stereo capture of acoustic instruments, drums, and more
  • Hemisphere modeling technology gives you access to 5 classic microphone models
  • Track through legendary mic models in real time
  • Proximity, filter, and axis controls shape your sound —before or after tracking
  • Cardioid polar pattern for rejection of unwanted background noise
  • Frequency range: 20Hz–20kHz
  • Includes 2 mic stand mounts, 2 foam windscreens, and 2 thread adapters for easy setup right out of the box
  • T-bar mount that allows you to use both mics with 1 stand and makes stereo recording a breeze
  • Apollo SP-1 presets will maximize your recordings with a pro-level sound

Reviews

Great sounding. Great looking. Great feeling
I'm very impressed with the SP1s! These microphones are relatively inexpensive, but the quality of the sound and the build is outstanding. I use these for music and sfx recording, and they are fantastic.

Solid Basic SDCs
So off the bat, they're a decent pair of small diaphragm mics. They're nothing special but they're definitely not cheap sounding. The added software is nice if you have a apollo interface and can use them on the way in.

The included clips are adequate and the stereo bar is kind of "meh".

The build quality is decent and the mics have a little weight to them. Theres no transformer on the output and the circuit seems to follow a modded schoeps design.

Overall they're pretty well balanced without a harsh top end like some other sdc's exhibit. If you dont have a pair of pencils, these are definitely worth a look.

My video goes into UA history followed by an in studio demo with the mic on piano, hi hat, drum over heads, acoustic bass and acoustic guitar. These mics get compared to the km184 and some other popular SDCs.

Warm Acoustic Guitar
I'm completely blown away at the detail, the warmth and the fulness of my acoustic guitar recordings with these mic's. UA gear is pretty solid. The plugin is very simple to use but the end result is truly amazing.

Very happy with this purchase and even happier that I purchase them from Sweetwater. Sweetwater rocks period! My go to place for top notch service, prices and quality gear! My sale rep., Greg Savino is awesome and
takes good care of me.

Amazing
Recording an acoustic guitar can be challenging, even in the best environments. I have personally struggled with acoustic guitar tracks for years. I could never quite capture the sound and tone I was looking for.

Using the SP-1 pair, right out of the gate I got amazing realistic tone. I set them up using the T-bar with 1 pointed at the bridge, and the other at around the 15th fret. With no EQ, completely flat, the sound was nothing short of amazing. Clean, focused, and no phase issues at all. Exactly what I was looking for. And it was painless.

I sent a short mp3 to buddy who has a studio, and he said he's never heard that clean and balanced of an acoustic flat before.

I absolutely recommend this mic pair!
Music background: 50-something years in music.
Sitsfor drum OH
I'm loving these for my drum overheads. Just enough body, brightness and some air without being spitty. I have recently used Sennheiser e614s, AKG C-214s, AT 4051s and these UA's have moved to the top of the class for me for overheads. Gonna have to pull them down to try on acoustic gtrs now. I've liked what I've heard online as stereo pair on acoustics.
Music background: 55 yr pro drummer, 28yr studio engineer.
