Works on (some) hollow body bass guitars!
I took a risk ordering this, because I wanted to use it in an off-label scenario. I have an Ibanez Artcore AFB 200 bass, which I use with flat wound strings. This is the model with the wooden bridge. I'm after that McCartney Höfner kind of sound, trying to get as close as possible to an upright bass. The Ibanez has two humbuckers that are warm and velvety, especially with the tone turned down a little. What they do not transport is the zing and snap of a double bass. I figured that next to a mic, a piezo would be a good way to get me into the ballpark. The concern was about the ability to mount it. That, I'm happy to announce, has been solved. Not only does the Realist attach to the Ibanez' wooden bridge, you can stuff the output jack into one of the f-holes and route out the cable in parallel with the one from the "official" output of the instrument. No modifications necessary.

Sound-wise, I'm very happy. It's still not the buzzing richness of a doghouse bass, but the signal of the 2 system blends into something very delicious. It's great with a bit of overdrive on the humbucker signal, with the piezo adding air and those all important treble frequencies. With the strings lower to the fretboard, you can capture some nice jazzy accents from the strings snapping against the wood.

I'm not using this setup live. If I did, I might opt for leading the piezo signal to the PA instead of an amp. I did have to EQ some hum, so this is not exactly a plug'n'play sort of situation. All in all, a great improvement to my bass guitar's sonic personality. Not thrilled with this thing's price … but I'm glad it's working in my slightly unusual setup.
AMAZING SOUND AND EVEN!
I was using the K&K Bass Max pickup but was never happy with it because it would move around on the bridge, and the slightest movement of it changed the sound drastically....so I upgraded to this...and WOW I couldn't be happier. It mounts to the adjustable bridge and stays in place and the sound is HUGE!!!! I play mainly swing, R&B, Country and some Rock-A-Billy and this pickup really makes a difference. Very even sound...mounts on the E String side so had to do some EQ setup to accommodate but once I got it dialed in I couldn't be happier! Thanks Sweetwater!

This is the pickup you want
This is the pickup you want for your upright bass. Sounds amazing, easy to install/uninstall, with no mods to your bass. This is a big improvement over their copper under bridge pickup and here's why. With the copper under bridge pickup, on stage live settings they are prone to feedback because it's picking up the vibrations from the top of the bass. This pickup completely remedies that problem with no feedback issues even at high volume.
