Nail That Abbey Road Vibe

Waves' REDD Native plug-in gives you the sound of Abbey Road's legendary REDD consoles. The iconic REDD.17, REDD.37 and REDD.51 desks were built by EMI's in-house Record Engineering Development Department and were in use at Abbey Road Studios from the late '50s to the late '60s, recording a broad range of talent, including, of course, the Beatles. Now you can infuse your recordings with that silky smooth EQ, palpable warmth, and opulent stereo imagery - all from within the comfort and control of your DAW - with Waves' REDD Native plug-in.

Waves' REDD Native plug-in at a Glance:
  • Exercise explicit control over your vintage vibe
  • Classic Brit "equalisation"
  • The real deal - right down to modeled noise
Exercise explicit control over your vintage vibe

The Waves' REDD Native plug-in gives you exacting control over your vintage vibe - control that Geoff Emerick and his fellow engineers never enjoyed while working on the original REDD desks. You can determine the type of amplifier (REDD.37 or.51) and employ Bass Lift to exercise control over a 9dB low shelf that compensates for low frequency loss caused by using a condenser mic in a Figure-8 config.

Classic Brit "equalisation"

The REDD desks were famous for their eminently musical-sounding EQ, and Waves' REDD Native plug-in gives you that luscious sound, along with iron-fisted control over it. EQ Select toggles between Classic and Pop EQ types (this was a prominent switch on REDD consoles to globally optimize the board for different music genres). Classic treble EQ gives you a shelf boost or cut at 10kHz, while Pop EQ generates a peak boost centered around 5k, with a shelf cut centered at 10k. Both Pop and Classic settings sport a continuous 10dB of boost or cut at 100Hz. And naturally, everything is fully automatable - just as you'd expect in a modern plug-in.

The real deal - right down to modeled noise

Waves - working in concert with Abbey Road Studios - has done a masterful job in bringing the classic sound of REDD consoles to your DAW. No detail was spared: they've even modeled the noise. Don't worry, though - the REDD Native plug-in is as quiet as a modern plug-in should be, unless you crank the Analog control, which increases the level of modeled noise and hum (a delightful artifact of vintage boards). You even get a Drive control to determine how hard you hit the emulated tube electronics. Go ahead - bask in vintage analog warmth, with Waves' REDD Native plug-in.

Waves' REDD Native plug-in Features:
  • Based on the legendary REDD.17, REDD.37 and REDD.51 consoles
  • Meticulously re-created color, character and tonal complexity of the original desks
  • Delivers the classic British sound of the 1960s
  • Developed in association with Abbey Road Studios
  • Classic and Pop EQ types; continuous EQ controls
  • Monitor controls the source of the monitor output
  • Spread selects stereo processing mode (Stereo component only)
  • Drive controls the amount of drive added to the signal
  • Analog controls the level of modeled noise and hum
  • Output controls the output level of the signal
  • VU Meters display output VU readings

Reviews

Powerful!
Can take over your sound real fast. Works great as a vintage board on the beginning of each of your channels but only on default setting, that's all you need. Very nice having three board versions, all in all this thing is packed with flavor and options, Swiss army knife of color and at this price it's a steal.
Waves Abbey Road REDD
I've found this Abbey Road REDD plug-in to be not only interesting to look at, but to be able to give a different sound within my mix. The different EQ settings work, just use sparingly. A little goes a long way it seems. Bass lift will certainly do that, and a bit too much at +5 dB or so. I've chosen flat here. The EQ classic vs pop, and the highs and lows can color things, as will the version settings of 37 and 51 stereo in my use. I don't use this alone and not as a mere channel strip, but for that sound coloration. I add about 3 dB highs, and about 1-1.5 dB low, in classic. Pop is more of a shelving shaped EQ while classic is a bit more broad in Q.

Anyway, bottom line, this plug-in could edit your audio by itself or within an FX chain like I use it. It will be useful most likely for the EQ and the audio color in my opinion. I have this at the top of the free Waves Studio Rack within Presonus Studio One Artist V.6.

The purchase couldn't be easier. I did buy this through Sweetwater, and within minutes I had access to this and the other Waves plug-ins. I got on the PC with my Studio One DAW, opened Waves plug-in controller to download and activate. A few minutes later, they're accessible within the DAW.

GLAD I PURCHASED IT
This plug in is amazing to me. When I first got it I put it on a not so good drum kit that I planned on changing up a bit. So I put it on just the kick and it blew me away. Then I took it off the kick and placed it on my drum bus. I had no idea but the drum kit actually sounded way more full all of a sudden. I still made a few changes but I kept most of the kit but before I was about to delete the kick sample I used. Thanks Sweetwater once again I have not been disappointed with your product.

It has a great saturation sound with a simple but a wide range of E.Q. it teaches you to really listen to what or how you record a vocal or instrument. really sound great.

Wasn't real impressed with this. would use it in parallel or on an input but in series it squashes the signal a little much and adds too much unwanted coloring.

Since the early days of DAW software, Waves has been a dominating force in music and audio production. For those of us here at Sweetwater who've been recording since the industry switched over to computer-based studios, it's impossible to imagine sessions without L series Ultramaximizers, MaxxBass, and other staples. Since then, we've been impressed every time Waves has brought top producers such as Jack Joseph Puig and Chris Lord-Alge to Sweetwater to show off their next cutting-edge creations, and Waves is constantly adding new and innovative plug-ins to their catalog. And with cool new gear such as their SoundGrid series, Sweetwater engineers have discovered just how easy it is to use Waves plug-ins live.
