Welcome to the All-tube, Analog Sound of REDDI

The A designs REDDI Tube Direct Box is a unique unit. By "unique" we mean the effort placed into the REDDI to produce a sound and character all its own. That effort took A Designs Audio back to a place in time when the Ampeg B15 reigned supreme - making liberal use of tubes and transformers. The A Designs REDDI endeavors to not only rebuild that tone, but also bring that sound to pro audio. Plug a Bass into a REDDI and it's a step back in time. Thick, round, solid sounding Bass notes that sit perfectly in the mix. A Designs REDDI is also great for guitars, synths, and any other electronic instrument that requires a direct box for recording. In fact, some recording engineers have said that REDDI is the "best tube DI ever made."

A-Designs Audio REDDI at a Glance:
  • Tube direct box
  • Custom wound large output transformer
  • Toroidal power transformer
  • Dual triode 6N1P Tube
  • Combo XLR/1/4 Inch input/output connectors
  • Drop dead RED metal casing
Tube Direct Box

The A-Designs Audio REDDI does not add tremendous amounts of gain as the point of this DI is tone, not huge increases in volume. A tube-based amplifier using the 6N1P output tube feeding an A Designs custom-wound output transformer provides the circuit path for your guitar or bass giving you a sound that you can't get through any other device.

Its all about the transformers

With any Tube gear, one of the key factor is transformers; both audio and power supply transformers. A Designs Audio custom-builds their own unique audio output transformer to produce the specific sound they're after. To keep the REDDI at its lowest noise level A Designs employs a special toroid transformer in the power supply - no wall warts or off the shelf transformer here!

Combo XLR/1/4" input connectors

Using the combination XLR and 1/4" input connectors makes the REDDI a more versatile unit. The 1/4" will handle the bass, guitar, keyboards, and MPC/Drum machines, while the XLR can be used with dynamic microphones for recording duties on snare, kick, or other instruments. The REDDI now ships with a 1/4" throughput as well.

Drop Dead Red Metal Casing

It is only fitting that a unique box like the REDDI should look unique. With a long chassis and a fire engine red finish (Red DI, get it?), the REDDI is impossible to miss even in a dark recording studio. The bright blue LED Power indicator can be seen across the stage, which makes the REDDI a very attractive package for both the engineer and musician.

Just what your signal needs

I pretty much only play on Sundays now as part of a worship team at a pretty good sized church. I struggled to spend this much on a DI, but it really is perfect at letting me sit right in the mix where I need to be. We don't run amps and rely on the FOH speakers for all of our sound. With my REDDI, I know I will get the consistent tone and power I need to fill up that bottom end. Do yourself a favor and spend the money!

Reddi

Best sound in house system ever. Sound man wondered what I changed. Was sending di from Eden WT-800, not a slouchy piece of gear.

Reddi

I am not a bass player, and sometimes I have to lay down bass parts myself. I end up spending hours attempting to get the right sound, messing around with amps, mics, boards and processors. Then i got my hands on a Reddi. As soon as I switched on, there it was, that sweet and sparkly sound I needed. The Reddi sound was tube warm with rich harmonics. Then I thought, well if my crappy old P-Bass can sound this good through the Reddi, why not try everything else. In went my Strats, Teles, Les Paul, Jackson, ESPs, ES175, and even my mic'ed up Martin D-35. Then the synths, and tone modules, I even took the output of a Line6 Pod X3 and all were excellent. I wil never record again without my Reddi.

REDDI DI BOX

Very impressive piece of equipment. We are pumping bass through it into the mixer/PA as we record and practice and it is a pure and saturated fullness of the sound. As a bonus, I plugged my Martin acoustic through it the other night and the guitar has never sounded better.

Direct Box...or Mic preamp

I like clear clean electric guitar recording. I prefer tubes in my signal path exclusively. The reddi recorded sound is exactly like my live sound with a little something extra. Try this thing... a pair is cheaper than a good tube mic preamp. Sound stage, depth of field, wide airy top end...it is all here. Sure the format is for the birds...rack mount the thing... my dog thinks it is a fire hydrant.

Sweetwater Advice

Andrew Teeple

As a touring bassist and studio musician, I use my A Designs REDDI on every live gig and recording session. It has become so integral to my tone that I had a custom tour case made for it. Basses come and go, but the REDDI remains the King of direct boxes!
