Prophet X: A New Legend

If you've ever thought about exactly what you'd want in your dream synth, rest assured: synthesizer design guru Dave Smith is one step ahead of you. It's called the Sequential Prophet X, and it's a bi-timbral, 8-voice stereo (16-voice mono) beast that combines everything you love about analog synthesis with the endless power of digital processing. At the core of the Prophet X is a powerful sound engine driving dual sample-based instruments and a pair of high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation, all routed through scrumptious-sounding stereo analog filters.

As for the samples themselves, Prophet X does it right. This 150GB sample library (created by 8Dio) comes packed with acoustic and electronic instruments, along with boatloads of cinematic and ambient effects. And that's just the beginning. Beyond the four envelope generators, four LFOs, and deep modulation matrix, you have loop manipulation, sample stretching, and other powerful tools to sculpt your samples. Top it off with a premium 5-octave aftertouch-enabled keyboard, onboard storage, dual effects engines, a polyphonic step sequencer, and more; and you have the Sequential Prophet X: a beastly synthesizer eminently worthy of carrying the legendary Prophet lineage forward.

Sophisticated sample engine

The Prophet X sample engine consists of two autonomous, digitally sampled stereo instruments per voice (four in Stack or Split modes). It also boasts 150GB of deep sample content created by 8Dio that includes a versatile selection of gorgeous acoustic and electronic instruments as well as cutting-edge cinematic and ambient effects. The samples can be shaped via loop manipulation, sample stretching, and the Prophet’s modulation functions. Every sample instrument is equipped with a highpass/lowpass filter Tone control. The Prophet X has an additional 50GB of storage onboard for importing external sample libraries (add-on sample packs are available from 8Dio).

Turbocharged Prophet synth engine

Comprising two high-resolution digital oscillators fortified with classic waveshapes and a supersaw, the Prophet X synth engine delivers the awesome power of a classic Prophet with expanded timbral versatility. Grab the Shape Mod control to quickly dial in a waveshape width for any of the classic sawtooth, sine, or pulse waves; then give your patch motion with an LFO or other modulation source. The Prophet X gives you a complete arsenal of classic synthesis functionality, including four syncable LFOs with slew and phase offset, four loopable 5-stage envelope generators, and a 16-slot modulation matrix with dozens of sources and destinations.

Stereo filters for dimension and impact

At the heart of any classic synth is its filter; and the Prophet X doesn't disappoint with its new, stereo 24dB/octave resonant lowpass filters, which are based on a vintage circuit. For a true stereo signal path, the Prophet X features separate filters for the left and right channels, enhancing both samples and oscillators with fullness, presence, and punch. At this juncture, it's worth noting that you can switch the Prophet from 8-voice stereo mode to 16-voice mono mode for additional polyphony — eminently useful for splits and stacks.

Highly musical polyphonic step sequencer

The Prophet X's polyphonic step sequencer provides up to 64 steps and up to six notes per step. If you're working in stacked- or split-voice mode, it lets you create a different sequence for each layer, making it a powerful tool for performance and composing. Sequences can even have ties and rests and can be synced to an external MIDI clock. The arpeggiator features note repeats and re-latching and can sync to external MIDI clock as well.

Two effects per layer

The Prophet X includes a powerful dual effects engine with multiple reverbs, two delays (standard and BBD), chorus, phase shifter, flanger, vintage rotating speaker, highpass filter, and distortion. In split- or stacked-voice mode, you can apply two different effects to each layer. To craft continuously shifting timbres, you can easily modulate effects parameters through the Prophet X's mod matrix.

Designed by a synth legend

At Sweetwater, the name Dave Smith commands respect. Holder of UC Berkeley CS and EE degrees, musician, design engineer, and the driving force behind Sequential Circuits, Dave's first synthesizer was the legendary Prophet 5 in 1978 — the first microprocessor-controlled polyphonic synthesizer capable of storing the value of every parameter within its voicing and control systems. This was a watershed technological breakthrough, and the implications were staggering. Think about this: before the Prophet 5, it simply wasn't possible to enter a patch number into a synth and recall a sound you had stored.

The Prophet 5 and its successors were hugely successful, finding their way into every top studio and major act's keyboard rig and onto countless recordings by artists as diverse as Madonna and Weather Report! Impressive, yes — but Dave also had a hand in inventing a little thing called MIDI. Taking full advantage of the latest cutting-edge digital/analog technologies, Prophet X is the most recent chapter in one of the great American synth success stories.

love it

I own a lot of gear, kinda slept on this for a while, then got one and WOW. To me, it's just a special board, sounds super super great. I bought a 2nd unit so I have a home and away X. I basically never buy a 2nd unit, but for this, yeah.

One small issue is the output jacks are fussy regarding impedance. Practically that means my normal headphones get a low level of hiss all the time; through my other headphones with impedance around 80 ohms the sound is noiseless and superb.

Overall its a fabulous instrument, love it!

Fantastic Hybrid Synth!

Prophet X is a truly versatile hybrid synth. Great 61 key Fatar key Ed w Aftertouch, SSD with a ton of factory preloaded content along with another 50 gig of free space to load your own samples or libraries. Quite a few additional sample libraries out, too, and some of them are great quality and free (try Replicants if you haven't already!). Really love finally having a "knob per function" type synth, much easier and faster to stay in the creative flow compared to some of the menu diving on my MODX (which is also great, and I am finding these two complement each other). Solidly built. Wasn't sure if Id like the 3 OLED screens (as opposed to a single central screen, but they are proving very helpful since they are positioned right next to the associated section where tou are working or adjusting/selecting something. Smart design, Destined to be a classic!

Incredible sound quality and creative abilities

Got my Prophet X nearly a year ago, and just realized I haven't reviewed it. I call my work 'electronica singer-songwriter', I'm looking to create and use unique electronic textures and sound combinations in the service of melodic and lyrical pop songs. The X is really the perfect instrument for this approach and has become my centerpiece along with three analogs, a drum sampler, analog drum machine, guitars and amps, and full compliment of virtual instruments.

My favorite aspects
- the combination of full-bandwidth samples, on-board digital oscillators, and onboard *stereo* analog filters results in a uniquely gorgeous and musical output that sits so beautifully in a mix.
- hardware quality is top notch with an intuitive and quick interface that makes sound design and tweaking a doddle. The Fatar aftertouch keybed is sweet.
- onboard samples by 8DIO have been controversial; they are unusual, shamelessly "artsy", and will definitely NOT provide you with any sort of bread-and-butter rompler. For my purposes though (I have plenty of bread and butter samples available via virtual instruments on my computer) the onboard samples have been great as a source of inspiration for deep sound design and coming up with unique sounds that often are exactly the thing to hang a track on.
- a solid community is forming around the unit and people are beginning to share lots of interesting samples among the community. 8DO's add-on packs are focused on samples of vintage synths and are high quality and good value. Check the forum at sequential...
- I think of the unit as a 'GAS killer' because all the samples you bring into it take on this amazing sound quality so the possibility of sampling and processing future instruments and synths as they hit the retail market gives you plenty of new sounds without buying so much new gear.

I bought the unit at the original price... It hurt when they dropped it... but I've never regretted the purchase. It's worth what I paid for it and a really good deal at the new price.

Don't buy this as an alternative to a Montage or Fantom. But if you're an adventurous sort ready to invest in top sonic and hardware quality you should give the Prophet X a serious look.

Oh My - What Fun!

I finally have a synth again with knobs! I have owned this now for several weeks and every time I sit down with it I discover an hour has gone by. You can just get immersed in this...there are so many possibilities. The preset sounds are fun - but the real power is in creating your own. The sample sound library is immense. Lots of choices. This thing has a bit of a learning curve to unlock its full potential, but even a novice could immediately start creating sounds....the knobs make it so easy. This is a beast to experiment with and create sounds no one has ever heard before. If you are tired of the same old Mini-Moog type sounds, this will really capture your imagination. Yes, it does those analog synth sounds great - but this will do so much more. There are a lot of routing possibilities. The screens are small, but completely usable...and I like the screen by the function concept instead of one master screen. The manual is great. I've already bought the Prophet 5 and Yamaha Electric Grand add-on sounds. Just more possibilities! Think about it - 150GB of sounds!!!! - this is 25 times more than my Korg Kronos or Yamaha Montage. And neither of those have the kinds of sounds contained in the X. Lots of cool atmospheres. Even all of the prophet VS waves! As I said, I am having fun everyday. Highly recommended.

Great sounds / super fat!!

This is one amazing synth! It has some of the fattest sounds I"ve heard with it"s combo of samples and synth engine. It"s actually super easy to use and allows you to come up with unique sounds rather quickly. It"s great to make nice layers / wall of sound. It"s expensive but worth every penny!
