Headphone Amp and Monitor Controller in One!

Sweetwater audio pros are big proponents of products that can do multiple jobs extremely well. Case in point, the SPL Phonitor 3 DAC is both an amazing headphone amp and an incredible monitor controller! Powered by SPL’s flagship 120V technology, the Phonitor 3 DAC offers the same monitoring quality and spatial perception as on SPL mastering consoles, thanks to its Phonitor Matrix. It also converts PCM audio signals with 32-bit resolution and an astounding 768kHz sampling rate, whether USB, AES/EBU, or S/PDIF signals. The SPL Phonitor 3 DAC even handles DSD signals with a resolution of up to DSD256. In short, the SPL Phonitor 3 DAC deserves serious consideration as your studio's perfect monitoring hub.

Powerful 120V Technology

The idea behind SPL’s incredible 120V Technology is simple: you need the best possible power running throughout your electrical components for the best possible audio. The SPL Phonitor 3 DAC runs at an extremely high DC voltage of 120 volts (+/- 60 volts). It’s worth noting that 120V has nothing to do with the power from your mains. The SPL Phonitor 3 DAC’s internal toroidal transformers and rectifiers convert the AC voltage from your mains into the device’s required operating voltage. This facet allows every component inside the SPL Phonitor 3 DAC to perform consistently in their ideal operating ranges, and the shielded toroidal transformer power supply plus precisely matched transistors ensure no problems arise from interference or thermal issues. Plus, Its Phonitor Matrix gives you the same high-quality monitoring capabilities and spatial perception of SPL mastering consoles — even on headphones!

SPL Audio: supercharged audio products

Formed in Germany in 1983, SPL Audio has been at the forefront of the pro audio industry since its inception. After developing proprietary 120V Technology in the ’90s, SPL decided to make this groundbreaking invention the heart of all its high-end products, and this incredibly powerful yet transparent sound has earned many devotees at Sweetwater and beyond. Other revelatory inventions SPL has become known for include level-independent envelope processing and using phase cancellation in auto-dynamic de-essers for reducing sibilance.

Reviews

A few oversights
I purchased this as well as the expansion rack. The good: Quality build & sound. Multiple source options and of course the headphonecentric intended design.

The bad: Power button on rear of a rackmountable unit? Non-Stepped volume control. Oversized volume nob seems pretty useless. I'd rather have smaller, dedicated volume nobs for the other source inputs. Expansion rack was a bit awkward to put together as the screw holes were difficult to allign.
