The Stage Version of Bob Moog's Final Design!

Moog Music has released Little Phatty Stage II, an analog synth with its sound engine designed by Bob Moog in one of the coolest-looking packages ever. Little Phatty Stage II is the realization of Bob's dream to combine the Moog's great analog sound with an instrument that is not only accessible to most musicians in terms of price, and equally important, designed with live performance in mind. The Little Phatty Stage II is the normal production run of the Phatties, as the Tribute Edition is now sold out.

Moog Music Little Phatty Stage II at a Glance:
  • 37-key, true analog synthesizer with Real Analog Control
  • Multiple interfacing capabilities and universal power supply
  • New Features

Real Analog Control
Little Phatty Stage II is a 100 percent analog signal path, 100 user-editable presets and a 37-note keyboard with +/-2 octave transpose. The Little Phatty Stage II is not just the dream of Bob Moog, it's a performer's dream as well, with features like Real Analog Control (RACTM); a proprietary technology that lets you directly interface with the analog circuitry via the knobs on the control panel, and without any digital processing. In performance, this means that RAC grants you access to two ultra-stable voltage controlled oscillators and one voltage controlled filter. For additional auditory acrobatics, you can also crank up the overload control for pre- and post-filter distortion - and all of these controls grant you absolute power over the sound engine with no digital middlemen (latency) to go through.

Multiple Interfacing
Little Phatty Stage II also offers a world of interfacing capabilities with MIDI in/out jacks, three external CV inputs, and an external audio input. And, speaking of the world, the universal power supply accepts any line voltage from 90-250V AC; 50-60 Hz, meaning performers are ready to go whether their gig is in Dallas or Dublin.

New Features
The addition of MIDI over USB makes this sound sculpting tool even more powerful. Combined with its warm analog sound, ability to process external audio and its intuitive performance, sound design and control features, the Stage II makes a great addition to any rig... from full-on analog, to the perfect companion to your favorite laptop/softsynth setup. You can also connect it directly to a computer running the Little Phatty Editor/Librarian. MIDI Clock Sync allows you to synchronize the LFO and arpeggiator rate to your MIDI sequencer, drum machine or software. Sample and hold, triangle, square, sawtooth and ramp wave modulations can now be perfectly timed with your rhythm track.

The Arpeggiator is a great new performance feature with applications for musicians in all genres. Its wide variety of uses is sure to find a place in your style. Of course, it also syncs to MIDI clock. Tap Tempo brings LFO and Arpeggiator tempo sync functionality to situations in which there is no MIDI clock.

The Little Phatty is a bit deceiving out of the box. It's a relatively small and lightweight unit, almost seeming like a toy. But the build quality is great and the keys have a nice feel to them. The I/O of the unit is straightforward, having one audio in, one audio out, MIDI In/Out, USB, and three CV controls. I plugged the Phatty into the instrument input of an Avalon VT-737SP on high gain mode with no compression or EQ. Listening through my Mackie HR824s, I was floored. Just the amount of sound, along with the depth and clarity, was amazing! For those who still have a desire for true analog sound, this takes the cake with its 100% analog circuitry. In my opinion, no plug-in can match the sound of this unit. It's the real deal! The presets out of the box are, for the most part, useful and a good starting point. Being a novice to the lead analog synth world, I found the layout logical, following the circuitry from beginning to end across the synth. The big toggle pushbuttons are easy to read and what they do is obvious. There's not much of a learning curve with this as long as you have a basic understanding of how an analog synth works, and what each part of the circuit accomplishes. The fine tuning knob is useful for tweaking sounds. Overall, I would highly recommend this unit for a studio or a keyboardist looking to add that old-school Moog sound to their rig. I know that I could play around with this unit for hours as the possibilities are virtually endless.

After years of hearing Moog synths played in live bands and recordings, I was excited to get my hands on this Little Phatty II. As I took the synth out of the packing box I was struck by how sturdy it felt. It wasn't minutes later that the Moog was fired up and I was using one of the hundred presets to pound out a funky bass line. I was impressed by the fat sounds that were already preset in the Moog. The fun really started when I began to explore all the sonic possibilities available at the turn of a dial and the push of a button. Oscillators and modulators gone wild! The huge synth bass tones coming out of this Phatty were amazing! It's easy to see why these synths are loved by live players. The ability to create and manipulate these "phat" tones and modulations on the fly makes the Little Phatty extremely versatile, not only in a band situation but even in a DJ rig. If you're searching for a true analog synth with intuitive controls wrapped into a "cool"-looking package, you've come to the right place! Be prepared to achieve the classic Moog synth sounds without breaking the bank. And don't stop there... create new sounds for the new times!
