All-tube Ampeg tone

Inside of the PF-20T Portaflex bass head, you'll find a set of glowing 6V6 and 12AX7 tubes. The tube design of this amplifier allows you to get that warm, harmonically rich tone Ampeg is known for, or push it hard to get an overdriven tube growl. So whether your ideal Ampeg tone is bringing Motown thump, or grabbing a pick and punching the front end of your amplifier as hard as you can, you'll fall in love with the tones in the Ampeg PF-20T Portaflex.

Huge sound, convenient size

Even with the diminutive size of the PF-20T Portaflex amp, you have all you need for getting huge tones through your cabinet, on your tracks, or both at the same time. The straightforward front panel makes dialing in your tones a snap, while the back panel offers XLR outputs for preamp out (with pre/post EQ switch) and transformer-balanced line-out. Its smaller footprint is easy to transport, and it sits beautifully on a recording desk or affixes to current Ampeg Flip-top cabinets. And the whole tube package is less than 16 lbs.

A great recording tool for players of all styles

One of the most useful features of the PF-20T Portaflex bass amp is its ability to run without a speaker load. Combing this with the preamp out (with pre/post EQ switch) and transformer-balanced line-out, you can optimize the PF-20T as a desktop unit for running direct and sending your tube tone straight to your recording rig. The smaller size allows it to sit right on your studio desk within easy reach, and the black metal casing and glowing tubes look cool and classy.

Great for recording

I have always loved the tone and response of the classic SVT/8x10 combination. But these days I don't play live, and only record. And while I love the sound of a miked SVT, my studio space is small, and having an enormous stack like that just wouldn't make sense. So when this came out, I was stoked, and picked it up, along with the svt 210 av, in hopes of creating a "mini SVT". Construction/fit-and-finish is great. Solid, well built, and looks cool. The front light is red when in standby, and purple when fully on. The EQ is very interactive and musical. There are a lot of tone combinations possible. Easy to get top end bite, midrange growl, or keep it fat warm and round. The two DI outputs sound very nice, and it has the option of standard pre/post DI or transformer balanced DI. The transformer balanced one is dirtier, in a nice way. Ground lift is handy. This amp doesn't overdrive like you might think. Even with gain at 10, it's still pretty clean. EQ controls affect gain, and can be used to add more drive. Volume wise, it's full and fat, but not that loud. It wouldn't hang with most of the (rock/metal) drummers I know, for sure. But it's perfect for low-volume recording situations like mine, where you want to get the power tubes into their sweet spot, with a nice fat miked sound, and still not be shaking the walls. It actually sounds really good for guitar as well! I've been using it for both bass and guitar these days. If you search youtube, there's a pretty good guitar demo using this amp: Guitar through Ampeg PF-20T I was on the fence about purchasing this, but am really glad I did. Excellent amp so far.

This amp sounds so good! I love it!!

This is indeed, a little tone monster. I mainly bought this for home use. I had to wonder if it would have enough for getting together with guitar and drums on occasion at a friends house. Paired with the pf115lf I believe this will be more than enough and even for small to small/medium gigs with efficient cabinet/s. It puts out a lot more than I expected! As advertised, this is not going to be ideal for large+ shows but even then you have the option to run through the PA with this thing. Tube tone is full and creamy, I can't put my Pbass down. I'm able to cop some spot on B-15 sounds as well as your more modern stuff. Worth every bit of $ asked for it. Will try to follow up once I sit down with some buddies and put this through the paces.

Ampeg PF-20T

Just got this head with the Ampeg 1x12 cab. Used it on a jazz duo gig and we were both blown away! Tone for days! Plenty of power in that setting and the kind of tone that makes you want to play all day! Highly recommended!
