A smart selection of inputs lets you connect all the analog gear you need

Whether you need to connect a low-output dynamic microphone or an extra-hot line-level sound source, the RME OctaMic XTC delivers the analog input you need. A set of eight XLR combo jacks save space while giving you inputs for microphones, line-level sources, and even instrument-level signal. In fact, half of the OctaMic XTC's jacks are wired for balanced line level TRS plugs, whereas the other four feature extremely clean DI circuits.

Pristine microphone preamps and AutoSet ensure top-quality sound

Going hand and hand with the OctaMic XTC's versatile analog input selection is a series of eight microphone preamplifiers, which features one of RME's most pristine circuitry to date. Not only are these preamps incredibly clean, with distortion levels so low they make other respectable models sound like toys, they also offer an impressive 85dB gain range. Best of all, the OctaMic XTC features RME's AutoSet function, which provides automatic gain reduction across one or more linked channels for perfect levels every time.

All the digital connectivity you could ask for plus USB for your computer

AES/EBU, ADAT, MADI, you name it - the RME OctaMic XTC comes complete with a full spread of digital I/O for the rest of your gear. Word clock and MIDI provide you with additional connectivity for control and sync purposes, and the whole system can controlled remotely. Even cooler, USB 2.0 connectivity lets you connect your RME OctaMic XTC directly to your computer, for high-end recording without a full studio rig.

Great for Live Recording

I'm using 2 Octamics in conjunction with a 16-channel passive splitter (Radial OX8 x2) to perform live concert recordings. I've looked at a lot of options for preamps, but three major things made the XTC a perfect fit for live recording: - MADI - Being able to daisy-chain my preamps and run 16 channels of audio through a single MADI cable is a godsend. Not having to coil a 16-channel analog cable saves me a lot of time, space and weight. Not that I'd be able to tell the difference, but running a digital signal over a long distance is better for sound quality too (as opposed to a long analog cable run). - Remote-Controlled Preamps - Being able to remotely control both XTC's via MADI allows me to set up my laptop & recorder in the sound booth. During a live recording, you can't run onto the stage to adjust the gain in the middle of a set. This also allows for more accurate monitoring. - AutoSet - RME's Autoset feature is a lifesaver for music festivals and seat-of-your-pants gigs where no one has time to give you a full sound check. Just set your levels high, let the band play a song, and the XTC automatically adjusts the gain so that the highest peaks are at -6db. No clipping! There are lots of other great features; 2 headphone amps, digital format conversion, great sound quality, rock-solid stability, and the incredible TotalMix FX. I'm very happy with my purchase, and if I expand to 32 channels it'll be through 2 more Octamics!
