Reviews

Terrific Cab
I purchased this Origin cab strictly for a base to put two 1970s Greenback speakers in it. It sounds terrific and goes perfectly with with a Marshall Mini Jubilee 2525H. I just couldn't see spending over a grand for the matching 2x12 jubilee angled cab. Glad I purchased the Origin. It's perfect.
Music background: Former RE (tracking and mixing mostly on SSL E & G Series, Otari 54 and Neve). Veteran.
Loud and proud
This is a fantastic 2x12 cabinet. It's got a lot of presence and really brightens the tone of darker voiced Amps. It projects sound very well, regardless of the head pushing it. I have used this cab with the Marshall Origin 50 head, Peavey Valveking and 5150 (script) heads, Randall RG175 and RG100 heads, a Crate Power Block, a Vox MV-50 (rock), and an Orange Terror Stamp; each of these amps sound terrific through the Origin cab. Can't go wrong for the price. I really enjoy the well rounded sounds it produces. The speakers are quite responsive to the EQ sections of your preferred Amps. It's a great addition to any gear collection and offers plenty of power handling to ensure that your tone is clearly delivered.
Music background: 32 years experience playing the local circuits, as well as occasionally touring the Continental U.S. with several almost made it bands
Perfect
I use an Orange or15. Wanted the matching cab but it cost more than the head and was sceptical about the open back and neodymium speakers. Decided on this for the cost factor and wanted a vertical 2x12. Was unsure at first but after a few days my ears adjusted to the new cab and it seemed to smooth out. Have owned way more expensive cabs and this one sounds just as good. Have had cheap cabs that sound brittle with no punch but not this one. The 70/ 80 speakers get a bad rap but I see no need to change them. That may change the more I use the cab in different spaces. I will be adding protective corners soon. Love the retro style grill cloth. My sales rep Brandt Miller is awesome. Have had great and much needed conversation with him during these impersonal times.
Music background: Multiinstremetalist. (Guitar,bass,and drums)
Great looks, questionable speakers
I absolutely love the looks and size of it! It has the height of a regular 4x12 but it is about 20" wide which makes it perfect for it to live on a living room without bothering anyone. The diminutive size also brings the added bonus of a low weight (at least low for speaker cabinet standards). This thing is easy to haul around! Plus it has some very handsome looks that scream vintage Marshall. I much prefer the looks of the Origin version to those of the basically identical MX212AR of the DSL line, which are more aggressive and wouldn't be allowed on a living room (at least not on mine). Seen on my provided pictures in my living room looking classy.

160W of power handling is absolutely fantastic for anything I can throw at it. I have a couple of 100W heads and a few lower wattage amps that all work well into this cab. No need to worry about it.

Construction and materials wise, it is MDF. It is not an issue to me since I am a basement/garage/bedroom player now and I very rarely move it around. And for the price I really can't complain. If the market was booming with other options of plywood or solid wood cabinets at this price my opinion would be different.

I bought mine on a whim while these were on sale. It was about half price for it less than two years ago which I considered to be a pretty good deal at the time (plus it was pre-marriage, so it was much easier to just buy stuff back then).

However, the speakers leave a lot to be desired. Time for a story:
After I left all my gear at my parent's house, I needed to obtain some basics again. I wanted to have at least one cabinet available and multiple amp heads to go with it. I am not playing live anymore so a small 2x12 that can handle the wattage of big amps was the prime choice for me. While looking around Sweetwater, there are a lot of good options for 2x12 but some are much more expensive than this one and some others just don't have the wattage handling required. For the longest time, I was resisting buying this or the MX212 because of what I perceived to be a HUGE flaw: the Celestion Seventy 80 speakers on it.
You see, this speaker comes in the Vox AC4C1, a good amp, but with a serious weak link on the speaker. When I got my Vox I tried so hard to make it sound good. At the time I was living on a (very) small apartment which meant no loud playing was possible, so I was trying to survive a small cabinet through this horribly anemic, harsh, tinny speaker at (ridiculously) low volumes with single coils. There were no good tones to be had and I was suffering tonally & severely. Since then I have HATED the Seventy 80 with a fiery passion.
So when I saw this cabinet on sale, I had to convince myself that it would be fine. So I bit the bullet, and told myself I could change the speakers at a later date. But when it got here… they still sound horrible.

Now, the speakers sound much better on a 2x12 configuration that allows a nice natural bass frequency to thrive than on the absolutely microscopic cabinet of the AC4. But I can still hear everything that I used to HATE from the Vox: a harshness that won't go away no matter how loud you make it (believe me, I tried with a cranked 100W Marshall). It sounds pretty bad recorded, it sounds bad at low volumes, it sounds bad with a lot of bass as it gets boomy, and the mid control on my amps have not helped it much.

I will say that thrash metal sounds do sound pretty good on this speaker as the harshness works well on a very mid scooped sound, so there is a lot of Metallica riffage going on when I play. If this is your main style of music, these speakers might work well for you.
I much prefer a vintage low gain sound out of my amps, which are not very compatible with these speakers, adding frustration to my playing sessions.

Now, is it really that bad? Well no, not really. I do like to exaggerate sometimes, but it is not super enjoyable. I did keep it as my only cab and haven't gotten around to changing speakers yet (see aforementioned marriage comment to understand why). Replacing speakers is something that I do want to do in the future, but the ones I would like to install (G12H Heritage) are only rated for 30W and would therefore render my only cabinet useless for my 100W heads, not to mention the speakers would be more expensive on their own that the entire price of this cabinet (again, marriage makes buying things hard, mainly due to ancillary purchases rather than permission). I did just purchase a Marshall JTM45 (my dream amp), and I am very interested to see if that amp will be the final nail in the coffin that will make me change speakers once and for all, or simply just buy another cab.

So overall, I rate the Marshall ORI212A cabinet 3.5 stars. Amazing looks, size, & weight, but bad (to my ears) speakers that would require changing for something better.

Can on a budget
In my search for a head and cab I had a budget I needed to stick to. This cab was in the price range I was looking for. The vast majority of my budget went to my ENGL Ironball SE. i wasn't sure of how good the amp would sound through this cab but trust me I WAS NOT disappointed! This cab sounds great! Plenty of full bodied tone! Capable of anything you are.
Music background: Some local bands, metal/industrial.

There are countless "British"-style guitar amplifiers out there, but take it from the lifelong guitarists and tone connoisseurs at Sweetwater, when it comes to Marshall tone, there's nothing like the real thing. We've played them all, from vintage JTM45s and the ultra-cool Plexi reissue to modern handmade masterpieces such as the JVM410. There isn't a model among them we can't recommend with total confidence, and that includes their more affordable models too, like MG, DSL, and Code series amps. Thanks to our tight relationship with Marshall, Sweetwater's always on the cutting edge of their latest designs, custom models, and limited-edition gems. If you want iconic tone from across the pond, you want Marshall, and your Sweetwater Sales Engineer will help you find the perfect one.
