A Synth Module Designed by Two Legends

What if two legendary synthesizer designers got together and built an analog polysynth using today's state-of-the-art technology? If you've just pinched yourself to see if you're dreaming, Sweetwater can assure you: you're not. The Sequential OB-6 Module is a 6-voice, all-analog, desktop synth inspired by Tom Oberheim's classic SEM circuits from the 1970s. Tom and Dave Smith packed the OB-6 Module with everything on your wish list. With two voltage-controlled oscillators and sub oscillator per voice, a state-variable filter, 64-step polyphonic step sequencer, twin digital effects engines, and more, the Sequential OB-6 Module delivers fat, punchy, in-your-face sonics that will power your music to new heights.

Synth dreams are made of this

Now, finally, the artillery you need. The Sequential OB-6 Module rocks six discrete analog voices with two oscillators and a sub oscillator per voice. Naturally, OB-6 Module is equipped with Dave's infamous X-Mod (two sources, five destinations). On top of all that, there's a 64-step polyphonic step sequencer, two digital effects engines (with studio-grade reverbs, delays, chorus, flangers, and accurate re-creations of Mr. Oberheim's renowned ring mod and phase shifter), and an advanced arpeggiator. To control all this firepower, you have a knob-per-function top panel that makes for quick, intuitive on-the-fly tweaks. From funk-laden basses and snarling, in-your-face leads to gloriously celestial pads, the OB-6 Module will make your synth dreams come true.

Heart of the beast: Oberheim's classic SEM

Oberheim's original SEM (Synthesizer Expansion Module) formed the core of Tom's renowned 4-voice and 8-voice synths of the 1970s. The SEM, in updated form, is also the core of the OB-6 Module analog sound engine. With two discrete voltage-controlled oscillators and a sub oscillator per voice, the OB-6 Module gives you the flexibility of waveshapes that are continuously variable between sawtooth and variable-width pulse. Oscillator 2 also sports a triangle wave. The classic Oberheim-style state-variable, 2-pole resonant filter features lowpass, highpass, bandpass, and notch functionality. The all-analog signal path is completed by the OB-6 Module's voltage-controlled amplifiers.

X-Mod, Poly Step Sequencer, and Arpeggiator

The OB-6 Module is spec'd out with Dave Smith's brilliant X-Mod, which makes it easy to achieve killer sounds via modulation. The filter envelope and oscillator 2 are the sources, and they both give you bi-polar control. The five destinations are oscillator 1 frequency, oscillator 1 waveshape, oscillator 1 pulse-width, filter mode, and filter cutoff. The polyphonic step sequencer lets you program polyphonic sequences (up to 64 steps, up to six notes per step), complete with rests, and sync them to external MIDI clock. The full-function arpeggiator can also be synced to external MIDI clock. You can configure the OB-6 Module's Unison Mode voice count for up to six voices. And to maximize your sonic firepower, the OB-6 Module is spec'd with a poly chain feature the lets you pair any two OB-6s for 12-voice operation.

Sequential / Oberheim OB-6 Module Features:

  • 2 oscillators and sub oscillator per voice
  • Continuously variable waveshapes
  • State-variable filter
  • 64-step polyphonic step sequencer
  • Full-function arpeggiator
  • 2 digital effects engines
  • Knob-per-function top panel
  • Poly chain feature lets you pair any 2 OB-6s for 12-voice operation
What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!

Reviews

I have to agree.
E'erybody is saying it. This is a great sounding synth with 'character'. Yeah, it really does live up to its reputation. It's a joy to sequence a few notes and just play around in manual mode. The filter is incredible. The VCO's are filthy. This became my #1 synth basically immediately and now I'm selling stuff I didn't think I would ever part with because the OB-6 is so exactly what I wanted. If you like to play big chords and just hear analog oscillators beat against each other while you drift away to another plane, this is the synth for you. If you like a slow deep filter sweep that sounds like *magic*, this is the synth for you.
Sequential Oberheim OB-6
Triggering this Sequential Oberheim OB-6 module with a Roland DS-88.This synth sounds fantastic! If your longing for a Fat,Warm,Analog sound this synth delivers.

Heaven
Let me put it to you this way:

The ob6 is the only synth to make me shed tears because of how beautiful it sounded. I dialed in a patch and I was just instantly transported away into what sounded like heaven, free of my earthly desires and burdens where I would be in bliss for all eternity, one with the sound. I forgot where or who I was for a second. It's that phenomenally good.

There is an ethereal quality to this synth, as if it's a living, breathing entity. The ob6 is where it's at.
Perfect
Warm, thick analog tones that will keep you inspired for years to come. The filter is what really makes this thing shine IMO.

The only thing I will say, if you are using cheaper analog/digital synths, they will not match the sonic quality of the OB6.
Changed the way I write music
The OB6 has truly changed my thought process with writing and recording music. It's such an inspiration. It's challenged me to be a better writer and also, helped me sound better than I thought I ever could.

It's is so beautiful and rich sounding. I've been replacing soft synth placeholders on so many songs and have been impressed with the huge difference. My canned predictable VST sounds now have a fully immersive and alive roar. One thing I've noticed about this synth vs. VSTs and Moog Model D type sounds is the extended upper harmonics. It gets extremely airy and crystalline on the top. Hard to describe, but easy to hear in person. Not slamming Moog, but actually this is a perfect compliment to that sound.

It's also great at a lot of different types of sounds. I've used it for everything from plinky bell tones, to organ like drones, to syrupy leads, etc. The synthy 80s pads are what drew me into this in the first place, but the staccato, percussive attacks are icy and cutting in the most clear and heavy way. And that's not even getting into the bizarre and useful textures you can pull from this beast.

If you like analog, organic sounds that will inspire you, don't blink, this is for you.
