A Complete Re-think of the Stage Piano

Are you a keyboardist who wants it all? We're talking about the Numa Compact 2 from Studiologic. The Numa boasts 88 semi-weighted keys, aftertouch, 1GB of killer sounds, 128 voices, two studio-grade FX engines, smart MIDI controller functionality, crisp OLED display, and built-in speakers — all in a svelte stage piano that weighs just a tad over 15 pounds. Revel in the tone of the Numa Compact 2's outstanding sounds — acoustic and electric pianos, guitars, bass, drum kits, organs, synths, orchestral instruments, and more. Use aftertouch and the programmable stick controllers to perform with enhanced expression. And when the gig is over, tuck the elegant Studiologic Numa Compact 2 under your arm and split.

Feels great no matter what you're playing

It's about time someone did a complete re-think of the stage piano — a workhorse instrument keyboardists rely on to deploy production-ready sounds, interface with DAWs in the studio, and hopefully provide a modicum of portability for nightly onstage use. A full-size 88-note keybed is the gold standard for note accessibility, but not everyone needs fully weighted action. If you work extensively with orchestral sample collections, or play a lot of synth parts, you'll appreciate a keyboard with semi-weighted action that works well for piano parts, but also provides optimal playability for virtually every other type of instrument. That's the Numa Compact 2. Studiologic nailed it. It feels great no matter what you're playing.

Sound quality and MIDI controller functionality

The Numa Compact 2's 88 onboard sounds and dual digital effects engines deliver outstanding sound quality, whether you're listening straight into the board, via the TRS headphone jack, or through the Class D-amplified speakers. The built-in speakers let the Numa Compact 2 double as home digital piano, and are perfect for hotel room jams and practice while on the road. Factor in the trim, lightweight — yet roadworthy — chassis, and you've got the ultimate stage piano. And what would a modern stage piano be without extensive MIDI control capabilities? With two programmable zones, the Numa Compact 2 lets you easily split and layer sounds. Give Studiologic's innovative, ergonomic metal stick controllers a workout, and you'll agree with the keyboard mavens here at Sweetwater that they're not just a novel replacement for the erstwhile pitchbend and mod wheels; they actually open up new avenues of performance expression. Throw in aftertouch and an expression pedal input, and you've got an instrument designed to faithfully communicate your finest shadings of musical intent.

Just what I needed

I play piano - just enough to make people think I know what I'm doing. Having played in bands for years in church, I'm on my own now playing gigs and open mics. I needed a keyboard that was portable but still had the right functions to sound credible. I had my eyes on another one, but thanks to Sweetwater, my rep pointed me toward the Numa Compact, after understanding more of what I was really after. The $150 increase in price is well worth it! I've had other semi-weighted keyboards, so there was no problem adjusting.

Including the function "aftertouch" blew me away. What is "aftertouch"? It's a feature that lets you manipulate the original sound of a note by applying additional pressure to its key. On the Numa Compact 2 88-key Stage Piano this feature works in both live and midi applications. This makes your playing sound much more expressive as if you were playing a full-size acoustic grand piano. It is usually only available on more expensive keyboards.

I love that I can carry it from room to room at home and it sets up in a jiffy in a performance space! Yes, 15 pounds is NOT a misprint! Plenty of functionality to layer sounds and split the keyboard into different playing zones make it more than a simple stage piano. The onboard speakers are perfect for practice. You'll want to plug into a PA system for gigging.

Make sure you update your sustain pedal to a Nektar. There doesn't seem to be any way to adjust the polarity if you have a different pedal.

To summarize: This keyboard is super lightweight, has a great feature set, aftertouch is included, and sounds great. 88 keys, USB midi (as well as legacy), outputs for a PA system, and pedals.

Best bang for the buck in a gigging keyboard

Let's get this out of the way - it would be nice if this had fully weighted keys. But everything you get for the trade off is SO worth it. At an INCREDIBLE 15 lbs, this thing is a godsend for gigging. I've had this keyboard for over 4 years and countless gigs, and it has taken an absolute beating…most notably busking in the 90° east coast heat. The piano sound isn't anything phenomenal but it punches above its weight for the price and you can get it to sound nice and big in a live mix. If portability is remotely a concern, this needs to be at the top of your list alongside other pianos in this price range.

Download the newer sounds!

I bought this keyboard due to the value at the price point for an 88 key controller with sounds. I was really not impressed by the internal sounds and used it mainly as a controller and used a Yamaha reface for pianos. Then I downloaded the new sounds and Wow! The piano pack and Mellotron pack are amazing. The "German grand" alone makes this keyboard worth buying. I also suggest that if you are looking for an affordable carry bag and don't want to spend the money on the branded bag (expensive) to get a speaker stand bag. I bought a Gator branded one that works great if you don't need a padded bag.
