Classic Auto-Wah Effects in EHX's Nano Enclosure

If you’re chasing Garcia-style auto-wah sounds but are overwhelmed by the full-sized Q-Tron+ pedal’s complex control layout, the Electro-Harmonix Nano Q-Tron offers the perfect compromise. Like its pedalboard-hogging predecessor, the Nano is an envelope follower that produces dynamic-controlled wah-wah sounds. The harder you pick, the wider the frequency sweep; the softer you pick, the more subtle the effect will be. Dialing in your sound is easy with the Nano Q-Tron — a few twists of its four knobs is all you need to unleash an avalanche of funk-infused, jam-band-ready quack. You also get true-bypass switching and a rugged die-cast chassis that’s compact enough for the smallest of pedalboards. EXH is a pioneer of envelope-controlled filter effects, and the Nano springboards off that deep legacy. Players searching for a top-shelf dynamic wah effect — in a pedalboard-friendly package — will find everything they need in the Nano Q-Tron.

Streamlined, 4-knob layout

The full-sized Q-Tron+ pedal is a lot to digest — it's a bit intimidating. That’s why Electro-Harmonix created the Nano Q-Tron. This compact stompbox is tailor-made for players who want to plug in and rip through a couple bars of “Estimated Prophet” without a ton of tweaking. The Nano Q-Tron includes a Volume knob to control your output, a Drive control that sets your sensitivity and filter sweep range, a Q control that sets the filter’s bandwidth from smooth to all-out funky, and selectable lowpass, band-pass, or highpass filters. At Sweetwater, we’ve found that you can dial in this stompbox in a matter of minutes. The Nano Q-Tron is one of the easiest ways to achieve old-school auto-wah effects.

Electro-Harmonix Nano Q-Tron Envelope Filter Pedal Features:

  • Smooth envelope filter pedal for classic auto-wah sounds
  • Internal envelope follower analyzes your playing dynamics to determine the intensity of the wah effect
  • Volume knob controls your output — great for level matching between dry and effected signals
  • Drive control sets your sensitivity and filter sweep range
  • Q control sets the filter’s bandwidth from smooth to all-out funky
  • Selectable lowpass, band-pass, or highpass filters
  • True-bypass switching doesn’t color your tone when the pedal isn’t in use
  • Rugged Nano-sized chassis is compact enough for the smallest of pedalboards

Reviews

Very easy to dial in
Bought this to replace another brand and worth every penny. Easy to dial in and sounds great. I need another one for a different board.
Envelope filter for acoustic and electric
This envelope filter is amazing!! I use it for both acoustic and electric guitar. Make sure you adjust the settings for your liking and away you go. And yes, it's pretty close to the Jerry Garcia tone so I'm super happy. A great addition to my pedal effects, highly recommend!
The best envelope filter I've played!
The nano q-tron envelope filter is by far my favorite envelope filter. It's extremely versatile and has the best sounds I've heard from an envelope filter. All of this while being super pedal board and user friendly. Also, the addition of a volume knob makes the nano q-tron much easier to use than the micro q-tron. If you were thinking about getting an envelope filter pedal than this the one to get.
Music background: Guitarist
Electro Harmonix Nano Q Tron
I use the Naon Q Tron pedal primarily for pedal steel with just a hint of overdrive. I find it to be much more versatile than a simple auto-wah (which I never found useful for the music I play). The adjustable dynamic response of the Nano Q is very linear, starting from the subtle envelope filter sound I prefer, /and increasing slowly to a funky quack. The 3 sweep modes have distinct characters, all pleasing. It takes a while to dial in what you want but it isn't difficult; I appreciate that the effect is so customizable. The pedal housing and control knobs feel very solid. Time will tell as to its longevity (I got it last week), but I've owned several other EHX products for years and they're still working fine.
Best Sound
I am using this to add embellished sound to saxophone solos in funk gigs. Like all envelope filters, it takes some work to dial in the settings to what you want in terms of the mix of drive, Q (narrowness of the filter), and volume (auto-wah can be too loud and filters like this cause loud volume at frequencies with significant phase shift and thus can cause feedback problems). But after one tames the gain just a bit and gets a sound that works for one's preference, this is great. I have to use an Eventide H9 sometimes (Q-Wah setting) for similar sounds in some gigs but the Eventide, while being programmable and super flexible, will not get close to how good the Q-tron sounds no matter how much i futz with the Eventide settings.

Do not be discouraged by the challenges of dialing in the settings--once you get it nailed, you will never go back.
