The Softube Mutronics Mutator is a meticulously modeled plug-in version of the now infamous Mutronics Mutator of the early '90s, which had a huge impact of the sound of music from that decade. You can hear the original hardware unit on records by Radiohead, Beck, Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Nine Inch Nails, and many others. Unfortunately, production stopped cold when a critical component was discontinued by the part manufacturer. Each of the Mutator's two channels incorporates an analog voltage-controlled filter (VCF) that will give you synth-like filter sweeps on any sound source that you feed into the unit. You can modulate the filter from several sources, such as the envelope follower, which sweeps the filter proportionally to the amplitude of the source. You can also control the filter via the onboard LFOs - each with four waveforms that create filter sweeps in or out of time with the music. In Gate Mode, the filter is either on or off - perfect for all manner of modern stutter effects.

You've got another cool option with the Softube Mutronics Mutator: the external sidechain input, which allows an external sound source to control the filter movements. Insert the Mutator on a pad track, for instance, and let the filter move in sync with a drum loop. Link or unlink the two channels for groovy stereo effects, use the Width control to broaden your stereo, and use the Mix knob to blend in the dry source with the mutated sound.
