Unbelievable Tone and Touch Sensitivity

The JHS Morning Glory overdrive pedal adds dirt to your guitar tone without changing its fundamental character. Dialing in your sound with the Morning Glory is a piece of cake, thanks to its straightforward layout. Simply crank the Drive control until you reach your desired level of overdrive, twist the Tone knob to hit the sweet spot, then set your master output level with the Volume knob. A Gain toggle activates a boost mode that yields more power, more low end, and more high-gain sizzle. When we demoed the JHS Morning Glory overdrive pedal here at Sweetwater, we loved the tone and touch sensitivity it imparted when we put it in front of our favorite tube amps.

For transparent overdrive, nothing tops the JHS Morning Glory

Winning more awards than any other pedal in JHS's extensive pedal library, the JHS Morning Glory is a modern standard in transparent overdrives — famed for its ability to ramp up an input signal with tasteful touches of bite, color, and tubelike touch and saturation. The Morning Glory pedal belongs to the BB/KOT family of transparent overdrives adored by guitar greats like John Mayer and John Petrucci. So whether you're searching for bluesy grit or silky-smooth leads, the Morning Glory delivers. The Version 4 Morning Glory pedal (featured here) gives players twice the headroom of previous generations, along with the fan-favorite Gain toggle and Red Remote support, the latter effectively turning the JHS Morning Glory V4 into a powerful always-on pedal with the ability to call up a massive boost whenever needed.

JHS Morning Glory V4 Features:

  • Extremely transparent clean boost/overdrive pedal
  • Straightforward layout makes dialing in your tone easy
  • Makes a great always-on pedal for transparent tone sweetening
  • Volume control acts as a master output level control
  • Drive control slightly increases treble as you crank it up
  • Tone control is a highpass filter that gets brighter when you turn it clockwise
  • Remote-controllable Gain toggle increases power, low end, and high-gain sizzle
  • Bright Cut toggle removes harshness from bright-sounding rigs

Reviews

I've played guitar for decades, but I'm primarily an acoustic guy. I have a 6-string and a 12-string I play occasionally and one old electric that I hardly play at all. Earlier this year, my generous wife bought me a new Fender Stratocaster for my birthday. My interest in playing was re-kindled. I was playing clean tones through a tube amp. It was beautiful. I started re-learning old songs by searching for videos on YouTube. I was a happy man.

Then one day, the algorithm sent me a video about guitar pedals. What is this black magic? I clicked the link. More pedal videos started appearing in my feed. I eventually found myself over on the JHS website watching Josh Scott and his merry band of musical alchemists talk about overdrives, distortion, chorus, and whatever a pre-amp is. It was fascinating. Next thing you know, I'm glued to my computer screen watching two-hour pedal live streams from six years ago. That's normal, right?

The JHS videos led me to Sweetwater where I found videos of even more pedals. The people over there were so helpful. Dare I say, enablers? They'd ask, do you have any questions? Have you thought of trying this? My hands twitched lightly as they hovered over the keyboard and I entered my credit card number for my first pedal purchase. A few hours later, my phone rings and it's Sweetwater letting me know my order was received and they were processing it. Who does that?!

Then the magical day came. The big brown truck appeared in our driveway, the UPS man stepped out and handed me a box from Sweetwater. Inside was a smaller box with a red JHS label on it. I nervously cut it open and pulled out the Morning Glory, shining like a golden ingot in my hands. There was an angelic chorus, cut short as I rushed upstairs and plugged it into my amp and guitar.

I have to say, the first few strums were underwhelming. I fiddled with the knobs, nothing special. It felt like I had purchased a $ volume control. I began to think this whole pedal thing was a scam. More fiddling. I went to my amp and adjusted its settings, still nothing. Frustrated, I walked away.

With low expectations, the next day I started the fiddling process fresh again. And then it happened. I was slowly turning the drive knob up on the Morning Glory when my clean tone started to sparkle. Not exactly break up, just clean tone with something extra, something magical. The sound went into my ear holes and directly to my blood stream. I felt my brain light up with a feeling I'd never felt before. I needed more of that. I bent over my Strat and began to play. I played for hours until my fingers hurt. I hadn't done that in years.

A couple of months later and here I am, the owner of a full pedal board, completely enthralled by this strange new world of pedal effects. I spend hours playing my guitar every day trying to find that elusive new sound. I've learned new songs. I fall asleep at night dreaming about my next pedal. But I'm not addicted. I can quit at any time. Definitely. But I do wonder what sound I'm missing? Maybe I should text Cameron at Sweetwater to see what he thinks.

Great purchase
I get what ask the hype is about. This pedal sounds so good.
Beautiful Tone
Wow! What a fantastic pedal. I've played SO MANY overdrives and there is a reason why so many people love this one. It's truly transparent, adds crystal clear sustain, and can get a little crunchy if you need it to. Don't settle for anything less - save up and buy this one. Combine it with any of your favorite mid-focused drives and you'll never run out of tone options. Also, the feel under your fingers while playing just makes it so darn fun!

A Rare Pedal That Earns the Hype
It's not often that a pedal lives up to the weight of its reputation, but the JHS Morning Glory does exactly that—and then some. In a market flooded with overdrive options, the Morning Glory stands out as one of the most musical, dynamic, and responsive pedals I've ever played.

From the first strum, it's clear why this pedal is so highly regarded. It delivers that elusive transparent overdrive—enhancing your amp's natural tone rather than coloring it. Whether you're using it to push a clean amp into breakup or stacking it with other drives, the Morning Glory responds with clarity, articulation, and a warmth that feels organic.

What really sets it apart is its dynamic sensitivity. It reacts beautifully to your picking intensity and guitar volume—cleaning up without losing presence and breaking up with smooth, amp-like grit when pushed. The tone control is impressively usable across its full range, and the hi-gain switch adds just the right amount of extra punch when needed without sacrificing the pedal's character.

In short, this is one of those rare "hyped" pedals that genuinely deserves its status. The Morning Glory is a staple—not just for pedal nerds and tone chasers, but for any player who values nuance, feel, and musicality. It's a modern classic that belongs on your board.

I’ve been playing live music for over half my life at this point, and I’ve been a pedal fanatic for about the last eight years. I’ve tried dozens of OD pedals at this point, and this one has become the mainstay on my board. I typically use it as a boost for leads and solos, but I’ll also crank the gain knob to dirty up my Strat tone when I need something a little more aggressive.
