The Transparent-est of the Transparent Overdrives

Reimagining the mythical JHS Morning Glory as the ultimate ultra-transparent first-stage boost, the Morning Glory Clean bolsters its predecessor’s overdrive circuit with a studio-grade parallel clean blend that preserves your pick attack, low end, and dynamics — even at higher Drive settings. Built from the ground up — not merely modified from the original Morning Glory — this Bluesbreaker-style overdrive pedal brandishes a dual-gang Clean knob that proportionally tracks your Clean and Drive signals with no phase or volume issues, along with a Tone control that affects only the Drive path. You also get a higher-headroom, dual-supply power section inspired by JHS’s V4 designs. Plug into the Morning Glory Clean, and you’ll experience the familiar harmonic shimmer and compression the Morning Glory is famous for while also restoring wattage, clarity, and punch. Beyond that, this sublime stompbox lends its magic to tube amps, modelers, stacked gain, and electric bass, delivering superior results across the board. Engineered for immediate usability rather than extreme tweakability, the Morning Glory Clean tackles always-on tone enhancement and standalone clean boost duties with equal aplomb, providing you with refinement and balance in lieu of dramatic overdriven textures. When your transparent overdrive isn’t quite transparent enough, the JHS Morning Glory Clean is guaranteed to shine.

How a soundcheck sparked the Morning Glory Clean

According to JHS’s Josh Scott, the idea for the Morning Glory Clean came together during a Julian Lage soundcheck. A longtime Morning Glory fan and a major force behind its widespread adoption on jazz pedalboards, Julian sparked a deeper conversation about what he really wanted from an overdrive, which pushed Josh to rethink how far the circuit could go. The result is a complete reworking of the Morning Glory around a studio‑grade parallel clean blend, preserving the pedal’s signature harmonic shimmer and soft compression while leaving your guitar’s natural character intact — something any form of clipping, no matter how transparent, inevitably alters.

Clean and Drive that move as one

When we ran the JHS Morning Glory Clean through its paces here at Sweetwater, we quickly became enamored with the pedal’s Clean knob. As per Josh, the Clean control employs a dual-gang potentiometer that scales Clean gain proportionally with the Drive signal. Unlike many clean blends, which typically consist of a simple Mix knob tacked onto an existing circuit, the Morning Glory Clean was built from the ground up so that the two signals track together across all gain settings. And we can enthusiastically attest that it works as advertised — without any volume jumps or phase quirks — just seamless blending from Morning Glory to your pure signal. Moreover, the Morning Glory Clean’s Tone knob only affects the Drive path, leaving your Clean signal untouched. Finally, this stellar stompbox runs on a 9-volt dual-supply power section culled from JHS’s V4 designs, enabling it to achieve greater headroom than the original Morning Glory’s V1 circuit.

Simple controls provide endless — and glorious — sweet spots

Navigating the Morning Glory Clean is incredibly straightforward. The Volume knob controls the post-blend active boost circuit, enabling you to adjust your overall output in tandem with the Drive and Clean controls. The Clean knob re-creates the sound of the original Morning Glory in the fully counterclockwise position and pure Clean signal in the fully clockwise position. Start with the Clean and Drive knobs maxed, then dial the Clean counterclockwise until you find your desired balance. The Drive knob adds saturation to your signal. Again, start with the knob cranked, and use the Clean knob to find your sound. The Tone knob replicates the classic Morning Glory tone stack, affecting only the Drive path. Dial it back for warmth and forward for clarity. Incidentally, you can deploy the Morning Glory Clean as a standalone clean boost by cranking the Clean knob and increasing the Drive. When used this way, the Drive won’t produce any clipping — only a clean volume boost.

Might not be for everyone….
…but it's PERFECT for me! This is the overdrive pedal I have been searching for. I have been through many overdrives trying to find the right one for my sound and never could get it…until now. I play mostly soul jazz (think Burrell and Montgomery) with some jazz standards and jazz/blues thrown in. I use this as an always on and adjust the clean knob as needed. Josh and JHS nailed it! If you want clean dirt…then this pedal is for you. Also, special thanks to my sales engineer Ben Cameron…always a helpful guide with my GAS issues.

Excellent!!!
I'm a huge fan of the Morning Glory V4 to begin with. When I saw the Morning Glory Clean (MGC), I thought "this looks cool. I should try it". Well, it does not disappoint! It is a subtle difference from the low gain mode on the V4 in terms of tone, barely noticeable but a little more compressed to my ears. When you dial in the clean, it really opens up the overall tone of the signal. That is, as well, subtle but noticeable.
I am running this after a Wampler Ego 76 mini, which also has a clean blend. The two of those together play nicely and the MGC adds just enough hair to the signal to give it more harmonic depth. For my stage 2 drive, I have the Morning Glory V4. The two of them together sound simply incredible, and when you engage the high gain mode on the V4, the MGC pushes it enough to give it more edge, a nice stage 3 tone. I also experimented with a JHS violet and a JHS kilt 10. The MGC plays nicely with those pedals as well. It also does great just going straight into the amp (or amp sim) by itself. I usually run an ampless setup for my recording situation, and I use a few UAfx amp pedals for this. The MGC, like the V4, adds warmth and depth to all of those. JHS touts this pedal as the perfect stage 1 for stacking, and they are correct!
All in all, this is a definite 'always on' pedal and I am happy with my purchase. Add this to another Morning Glory and you get that perfect OD tone you've always been looking for (in my opinion).

This pedal is exactly what I was looking for in a drive
I had the Morning Glory v4 and sold it eventually. While that pedal had a super musical sound that I liked, I didn't find myself using it as much as I thought I would because the Nobels ODR-1 30th Anniversary (with a bass cut knob) had enough of what I was looking for in the same pedal department, and I keep a tidy, limited space pedalboard. When I saw Josh's video for this new iteration, I thought this may be the one. Well, it is... This new MG clean has the flexibility of offering just enough drive for getting decently, but musically gnarled, while allowing me to clean it up to VERY specific taste. Its versatility is really what sets it apart to my ears. You can realllllly dial in just the perfect amount of drive, sparkle, spank, gristle - whatever you need! Its unique configuration with how the knobs interact allow you to do this unlike any drive pedal I've used before, and I've used a lot of different ones!

I place it in front of the J. Rockett Dude V2, and I get more than enough super tasty gain on tap than I'll ever need for my own personal sounds. I think I have finally found my perfect clean/transparent overdrive pedal (and its perfect pairing with The Dude). Don't want to speak for those who currently have the MG v4 and are wondering because it may not be what you need, but if you haven't already bought a transparent type of overdrive before and you're looking for one on the board, I think you'd be hard pressed to find better than the MG Clean.

Great upgraded version of the MG
The addition of the clean blend is awesome. I really wish more drive pedals had this capability as it expands the use of the pedal exponentially. I have the previous version as well- and have used it on and off since purchasing it. The MG is a great circuit, but this addition of the clean mix makes it far better and much more functional for my purposes. I don't miss the gain toggle, and also really appreciate the top mount jacks.
Excellent addition to my board. I run it first in the drive loop- it feeds a Tumnus, Euphoria and Mofetta in that order. I run the clean blend around 50% with a higher gain setting than I used on the other version. Depending on the song, it may be on by itself along with the Euphora for exceptional cleanish tone, or drive the Tumnus into a higher gain. Super versatile.
