Reviews

Just what I needed, no more, no less.
I had a special purpose for this itty bitty mixer. I use it as a headphone monitor amp to overcome a few shortcomings of my Tascam Model 12. The Tascam will not send its SUB mix to the headphones independently. So, I send both SUB and MAIN from the Tascam to this little mixer and now can monitor both busses at will. Also, in DAW Control mode on the Tascam, there is no DIRECT monitoring. So I split the mic preamp out and send it to this little mixer for monitoring live mic when recording to the DAW and overdubbing in the Tascam's DAW Control mode. All of this is now in both my cans and on the speakers too using this mixer's MAIN out to feed the monitors as well. I didn't need a USB interface, all I needed was a little headphone and monitor consolidation and this little mixer fits the bill perfectly. The build quality is excellent as you would expect from Mackie. If you have a special circumstance to overcome that this mixer can serve, it will serve it well.

Nice compact mixer.
Works great for a variety of live settings or hobbyist/basement recording. Well built, fairly easy to figure out. Knobs, buttons and jacks feel sturdy. Like most mixers, it also shines for making harsh noise via 'no input mixing' and running the growly, squelchy unpredictable sounds into a chain of pedals and out into an old buzzy amplifier. I didn't purchase the Mix 5 as an instrument, but that's its primary place in my gear setup. I'm interested in the Mix 8, which I may buy for recording and mixing 'actual' music. But the Mix 5 is a rock solid tiny terror and will be used for feedback loops, textures and all around weirdness. I'm happy with my purchase.

Serious flexibility for the money
I'm using this as a headphone amp/more-me monitoring solution in a simple home studio. I don't use it live, and don't do any mixing through it, so not concerned with absolute sound quality or durability. But for the money, the flexibility is untouchable. I'm using literally every single input simultaneously, and once I perfected my workflow, it feels every bit as flexible as far more expensive, dedicated solutions I've used before. I can monitor playback and 3 channels of input with talkback in a super basic mixer. Good stuff.

Compact, but powerful!
I was looking for the smallest mixer i could find to handle my pedalboard setup. I found everything I could want and more with this little guy! I found the mic section to be just fine, though I did make a major upgrade. Got a phantom power convertor and used it to plug in a blue encore. Fantastic setup.
Across the channels I run:
1. Mic 2/3. Acoustic multimedia in Left channel, and electric guitar pedalboard chain into Right Channel, blending then with the Pan Knob 4/5. Aux in to feed audio from phone/tape/etc to house
Main Out R/L coupled together and sent to house and Phones sent to a personal stage monitor
It handles everything beautifully and has held up very well. Very good find! The fact it lacks the name Mackie on it means nothing. The logo holds its own.
Great little mixer
Bought this because I needed a quick fix for my IEM solution (also purchased from Sweetwater via Nick). At the last moment my sound guy said I needed a small mixer to translate the monitor feed he was sending to my Westone Mach30 in ears. Nick was able to get this to me quickly and in time for the weekend gig. Stupid easy set up and functionality, perfect for my bass playing ability and interest in running a sound board. LOL. Along with another recent purchase of the Tech21 SansAmp Bassdriver DI, my entire rig was in a small bag, easily carried along with my Pedulla Thunderbass in one trip from car to stage. The sound through the Mackie and Westone IEM was incredible; clear, precise, and far better than what I'd been used to from our JBL slant floor monitors.
This Mackie Mix5 may not have features dripping out of it's sturdy metal case, but it sure does the job it is designed to do.
Thanks yet again Nick, rock on!!
Music background: Happily playing bar gigs and parties around South Carolina!
