Massive Crunch from a Micro Amp Head

The Orange Micro Dark hybrid electric guitar amplifier head puts great high-gain tones in a simple and very portable package. Based around Orange's popular Dark series of amplifiers, the Micro Dark offers the same searing gain and tonal versatility as its big brothers, but boasts the same tiny format as the Micro Terror. This mighty mite crams 20 watts into a head about the size of a small lunchbox. If you need a simple-to-use, portable amplifier with huge tones, check out the Orange Micro Dark.

Orange 20-watt Micro Dark Electric Guitar Amplifier Head at a Glance:
  • Tones from the heavy to clean
  • Compact and convenient
  • Easy-to-navigate controls
Tones from the heavy to clean

The Dark series of amplifiers make no secret that they're engineered for high-gain heavy metal. But even with the few knobs on the front panel, you'll be able to quickly dial in a large variety of tones from metal grind to spanky cleans. And if the huge range of tones available aren't enough, the Micro Dark will work with most guitar speaker cabinets, allowing you to fine-tune your tone.

Compact and convenient

There simply aren't many other amplifier heads this small that can keep up with the Micro Dark's 12AX7-driven tones and 20 watts of power. At under three pounds, the Micro Dark amplifier head is a cinch to transport to any recording session, rehearsal, or gig. And its diminutive size makes it an easy fit in any room, no matter how tight the space may be.

Easy-to-navigate controls

The 3-knob control panel makes pulling great sounds out of your Orange Micro Dark easy. It features pots for volume, gain, and shape. The shape control is the same used on the other Dark series of amplifiers, going from scooped grind on one side of the dial to a more classic mid-focused tone on the other. Want even more tonal options? The Micro Dark boasts a buffered effects loop in the back for patching in your favorite time-based effects. And the single input and single speaker out streamlines your setup so you're getting great tone in no time.

SWEET DARK TONE

I read every review here and watched a ton of YouTube videos on this amp and was convinced I had nothing to lose. ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! This thing has such a sweet tone and is super easy to get a great sound out of. It drives my PPC112 with ease. Ditto for the 1960A. Effects loop is beautifully clear and no buzzes or other weird noises that often plague effects loops on other amps. People said it was loud and it REALLY is! I don't think I've gotten it past 1 without my dogs and cats ears bleeding! Could easily do clubs and small to medium sized venues. This thing rocks, AND it weighs less than a lunch box does. WAY easier on my old broken back and makes me forget about lugging around my JVM210 half stack or DSL40C.

amazing micro dark

Very loud through my Acoustic 4x12 cab. Very touch sensitive to my picking attack. I plan to take this to out of town gigs in case my Mesa blows a tube during a performance. I love the high gain and think I can get sounds from it that I've been unable to from other setups. Very cool amp! Very loud and is sensitive to my picking attack at all gain levels. Played it through my Acoustic 4x12 cab and was able to get some very nice dirty cleans as well as great high gain classic rock. I think it sounds best if I stay on the bridge pickup for both clean and dirty sounds with my Prs guitar. It has a volume and a tone knob which makes it much easier to dial in with this single channel amp. Turn up the gain and backoff the volume for cleaner sounds to taste. For songs like "The Story in your Eyes" by the Moody Blues or "Listen to the Music" by the Doobie Brothers it sounds fantastic! Nice effects loop, line out for recording, its got it all. As always Sweetwater ensured prompt delivery, thanks John! My rep Dylan Driscoll is always great to work with as well. I love the Micro Dark and highly recommend!

Tone, easy and versatile.

Being meh, about the Micro Terror, I wasn't expecting much, but tried since everyone was going nuts about it. Immediately fell in love. Easy to dial in some good times, from clean to modern metal. I never got so much variety from a gain knob. I could only afford the head at first (experiment had shown that a crappy cab didn't do it justice), so I used the cab sim out to my mixer, and it was pretty good for an included freebie. Then later, I added a PPC112 cab, while leaving the cab sim out to the mixer. A nice Wet Dry rig on the cheap, and it sounds amazing. With the gain one notch past the top, my Epi LP Custom PRO can go from clean, to crunch and have about 8 differ sounds in between, all controlled by my picking and guitar volume. My poor CrushPix 20W combo has been gathering dust.
