Tube-like Vocal Character in a Quiet FET Design

If the MXL V67G recalls to mind a certain green-bodied/gold-grilled studio heavyweight, it's no accident. This vocal mic exceeds all expectations, aiming to bring the breathy diction and throaty warmth of a well-loved tube legend to a quiet, Class A project-studio design. The V67G's Class A FET architecture and transformer-coupled output result in a fast, faithful, and flattering reproduction of male and female vocals. We're talking lead vocals that lead, and spoken word passages that speaks. And whether you're emoting or narrating, the MXL V67G's gold-sputtered, 1.26-inch capsule is able to give your voice a healthy dose of old-school broadcast character. In a mix, this often translates to a sound that is larger than life.

Here at Sweetwater, we have found the MXL V67G's primary function to be vocal reproduction; however, the MXL V67G can be an indispensable tool for the occasional acoustic guitar and piano. And, thanks to its moderate SPL handling and included low-profile stand mount, you'll have no trouble getting your MXL V67G into prime position on virtually any source — from guitar cabs to drum rooms.

Note: The MXL V67G requires +48V phantom power (+/- 4 volts) from your interface or soundboard. Contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer for more information.

In fact, ask a handful of experienced Sweetwater studio engineers, and you'll discover that many of us cut our teeth recording on MXL condensers mics. Microphones like the V67G large-diaphragm condenser are able to deliver professional results without the top-shelf price tag. And since many MXL microphones come internally wired with premium Mogami cable (another Marshall Electronics brand), you can be sure every MXL you buy from Sweetwater is rated to deliver quiet, consistent performance you can trust. Quality mic
This is the first mic I've ever purchased and I'm quite pleased. I'm a guitar player and wanted to try adding some vocals to my music, so this was a great option to start with. Great price for what you get, and the quality is solid. I also like the gold/green look, it provides that vintage vibe.

The MXL V67G is simply the best...
Do NOT hesitate for ONE SECOND to buy this mic...heck, buy as many of them as you can afford. I use two of them in my studio - the famous Green and Gold classic, and the new, all silver Heritage Edition! Both are rock solid, sound identical, and look GORGEOUS! Don't be fooled by the "project studio" moniker. I am using this mic to record my upcoming solo album. I also use it for the main voiceover mic for my Live Music Show that I stream LIVE on Twitch - FOUR TIMES A WEEK! When broadcasting a LIVE show, I HAVE to have a mic I can depend on. I have used a LOT of mics over my 30-year career and NOTHING short of an actual Neuman is going to compete with the MXL V67G. I use it for ALL of my vocals and to mic up my VOX 2x12 Cab - right against the grill. GLORIOUS! No mic has ever come close to this one for capturing my amp's True Tone. I mean, it actually sounds like MY amp on the recording. And as far as getting that vintage 60's vocal tone? That incredibly warm, silky smooth sound of a hot vacuum tube sizzling away - all without the tube?! This is IT. This is your mic. Proximity effect is stellar! You can play this mic like an instrument - moving closer and then further away while you're singing makes an unmistakable difference. Ultra clear and mid heavy when you are more than a foot and a half away and then, WHAM, get right up on it and it makes the sexiest, warmest, deepest, richest, smoothest vocal tone you've ever heard! I sound crazy but, I AM for this mic. If I could only choose ONE under $3,000 mic to run in my studio for the rest of my life, I would trust non other that the MXL V67G. And, I'm confident you'll feel the same. Stop agonizing over which condenser to buy and get this RIGHT. NOW.

Folks, run out and buy this mic!
This is one of the best sounding vocal mics for rock vocals. I own a Manley tube reference and I'm not going to say that this mic sounds better. What I will say is that it's mighty close in performance. It performs better and Warmer than the V-69, 990 and the 250 all from MXL. If you want to hear this mic on a rock vocal, go to YouTube and look up "Going to Rockingham Remix. That vocal was cut entirely before I purchased the Manley Reference mic, using the V67 on lead and harmony vocals. My new way of doing lead vocals is to lay the main vocal with the Manley, and double the vocal with the V67. This gives the vocal sound a bit of identity and makes the vocals pop. Also, I'm using a Manley Voxbox as the main preamp with the exact same setting for both mics. I have not had good luck recording acoustic guitars with the V67, but, you can't win them all. Powerful But Not Expensive
I only discovered MXL microphones recently. Having retired, and not being able to afford the new recording equipment I dreamed of, I started taking risks and buying less expensive equipment whenever I would see it on sale.

For this mic, the MXL V67G, I read both good and bad reviews while considering the purchase. I ordered it anyway, with reservations.

The first time I tried it out, on my own voice, I felt that I had made a mistake in buying, The V67G was very sensitive and seemed to over respond to any changes in my position. So, for example, if I moved two inches back from my original position in front of the mic, There would be a huge difference in volume level that was apparent on the recorded track.

But, upon continued use, I learned that if I gave the V67G time to warm up after turning on phantom power it seemed to stabilize and not be as prone to fluctuations caused by movement or positioning.

Now, after about a month of use, I love it. It has a rich, warm tone that sits well in my mixes that is different from any other mic I own. And I own a bunch of microphones that I've collected over the last 30 years. My condenser mic locker includes mics by Audio Technica, RODE, AKG, Shure, Nady and Sterling. At least for now, the MXL V67G is a favorite.

Thanks again to my Sweetwater rep, Rashi Brown, for following up with me after this purchase to make sure all was good.

My New Favorite Studio Tool
I was a firm believer in using a tube preamp on vocals, but this mic cuts through a mix naturally without the added hiss and brittle top end. It has such a warm vintage sound that my recordings are cleaner and have a lot more character. Less fuss and better results. Also, I went to use my old mic to do an A/B test and that old thing died on the spot. Definitely a sign that my new go-to has arrived. One of the best purchases that I have made this year.
