Highly Versatile Condenser Mic for Instruments and Vocals

An easy choice for producers, musicians, and content creators looking to add a reliable, high-quality condenser to their gear vault, the MXL 770 is a no-nonsense large-diaphragm condenser microphone offering superior recording capabilities for vocals and instruments alike. By utilizing a FET preamp and transformer-free balanced output, the 770 captures audio with a fantastic balance across all frequencies and a clear, open high end. Toggle on the 770's low-frequency roll-off switch, and you'll bask in a pure, untainted sound free from excessive noise and bass rumble. Its natural and versatile cardioid pickup pattern works exceptionally well when tracking vocalists, stringed instruments, and pianos, imbuing each take with a beautiful warmth and clarity that belie its affordable price tag. And with its built-in -10dB attenuation switch, you can be sure that the 770 is more than capable of holding its own against any sound source imaginable. Its usability goes far beyond music, making it an ideal mic choice for recording podcasts, voiceovers, and any other application where top-quality sound is crucial. Plus, each 770 comes in a rugged hardshell case with a custom foam interior along with a sturdy and stable shockmount — all you need is a mic stand and XLR cable, and you're ready to record like a pro!

Note: The MXL 770 microphone requires +48V phantom power (+/- 4 volts) from your interface or soundboard. Contact your Sweetwater Sales Engineer for more information.

Reviews

A great buy
If you have a quiet room or can block air conditioning vents, this Mic performs excellent. I love how it picks up my acoustic guitar without overwhelming my vocals.
Great Mic
These are great if you know how and when to use them, this is not a plug and play mic. I have used many different mics over 30 years of music production, you can spend 1000% more money, but you may only get a 10% difference. These are great general use medium diaphragm condensers. I really love them for overheads and room mics, pretty good on vocals too depending on the voice. Sometimes these go on sale for super cheap, I snatch them up when that happens.

first, a disclaimer. hear me out.

first off, I am primarily using this for spoken word but I do have a bunch of them in my studio and use them quite frequently. are these the second coming of microphones? not the raw audio of it, but if you know how to mix properly and you're using this on the right voice (if doing voiceover) they are awesome. but that's the thing. those of you who think it's going to sound like a $ Neumann are going to be severely disappointed but I don't know why people literally think this. it seems to be a thing these days. these microphones sound fine but if you know what you're doing with mixing, these things are perfectly serviceable and honestly I really like that MXL sound. not a lot of people do I understand that, but these are not plug and Play devices. I know a lot of microphones require very little mixing and you don't have to toy with them very often but these you do have to know what you're doing mixing wise a little bit, but the end result even though it might take a little bit more work, will get you just as good results as anything else. keep in mind that the shock mount on this thing is absolute trash. it actually broke the very first time I used it and I didn't even tighten it that much. yes. I broke it on the very first try. it is not going to affect my rating because I bought a microphone, not a shock mount. the case is a little flimsy but not a big issue at all. it's a case. it holds stuff. it clips shut. the pad switch as well as the roll-off switch work fine and they are nice and to tactile, not cheap feeling at all. I have a slightly higher pitched voice and with spoken word, these microphones sound a little wooly and pillowy, whereas the MXL 990 sounds like shattering glass to somebody that has a slightly higher pitched voice so I went with this one because a more farty low end is easier to deal with than a shrill high-end. people dump on MXL microphones because they are cheap but MXL microphones have been my workhorses for a very long time. there is no denying that MXL just has a certain sound and I think that sound may take a little bit more work to get where you need to go, but for the price I really don't think you can beat them.

The Best Mic in its Price Range. Period.
This thing brings me so much joy to record with. Instruments, vocals, you name it, this thing has done it and done it well for me. I prefer this over the AT2020, over the Behringer C-1, and even slightly prefer it over other MXL mics. It's a STEAL of a microphone for its price. I cannot recommend it enough.
