Two Compressors in One

At Sweetwater, compression is a food group; essential kit for any studio. Offering quick and easy two-fader dynamic optimization and mono/stereo operation, the Waves MV2 compression plug-in is unique in that it offers both high- and low-level compressors, giving you two ways to optimize your dynamics. MV2 also automatically applies dither, which compensates for digital quantization errors and guarantees a great-sounding signal.

Waves MV2 Compression Plug-in at a Glance:
  • Low-level compression
  • High-level compression
Low-level compression

Low-level compression is, essentially, the opposite of standard high-level compression (in which any signal above the set threshold is attenuated). With the MV2 low-level compression function, any signal below your set threshold is compressed upward, resulting in increased gain. Your dynamic range is compressed by boosting low levels, while leaving high levels alone.

High-level compression

Waves equipped the MV2's high-level compression function with automatic makeup gain and output level control - a classic setup. You control the compressor with the Threshold fader, which sets your desired amount of dynamic range compression. The automatic gain makeup function compensates for gain reduction, so your output is always consistent.

Waves MV2 Compression Plug-in Features:
  • High- and low-level compression in one plug-in
  • Intuitive and simple controls for quick dynamic optimization
  • Brings out room ambience and detail
  • Adds body and detail to any instrument
  • Great for dialogue and post-production leveling
  • Automatic dither compensates for digital quantization errors

Reviews

I Won't Master Without It
I use the MV2 on the stereo out channel in Cubase to tighten up the final mix. This plugin truly lets each element of a song stand out and be noticed while retaining the overall dynamics. The simple interface is phenomenal, too. There are very few controls to interact with, but that is the strength of the MV2. It's pure wizardry!
Can't beat it for the price!
Bought this as part of the Waves Gold bundle when it was on sale. The bundle price was $200 at the time, and this plugin alone is worth that much. Absolutely perfect for leveling out spoken word recordings without distortion or "over production".

This is my 'go-to' plugin for spoken word optimization - now that I have been using it for over a year I can't imagine trying to work without it!

Buy the plug or buy the bundle with the plug - you'll be glad you did!
Music background: Voice over artist, retired bassist
Doesn't work welll
I set the plug-in's output to -4, and it logic monitors the output at -3.3.

If you want precision, do not buy this.

Since the early days of DAW software, Waves has been a dominating force in music and audio production. For those of us here at Sweetwater who've been recording since the industry switched over to computer-based studios, it's impossible to imagine sessions without L series Ultramaximizers, MaxxBass, and other staples. Since then, we've been impressed every time Waves has brought top producers such as Jack Joseph Puig and Chris Lord-Alge to Sweetwater to show off their next cutting-edge creations, and Waves is constantly adding new and innovative plug-ins to their catalog. And with cool new gear such as their SoundGrid series, Sweetwater engineers have discovered just how easy it is to use Waves plug-ins live.
