Classic Tremonti Tones with Hard-hitting V2 Upgrades

Mark Tremonti’s lunchbox-size powerhouse returns with the revamped and revised PRS MT 15 V2, supplying you with everything guitarists loved about the original with enhanced Lead channel control. Engineered to excel in heavy applications but with far-reaching sonic versatility to take on any genre, the MT 15 V2 begins with six preamp tubes that grant this amp five gain stages. This hard-hitting configuration supercharges the amp’s Lead channel with an almost limitless level of saturation on tap, while the V2 addition of a push-pull Overdrive knob slices out two gain stages for crunchy mid-gain punch. Flip the channel switch or stomp on the footswitch to engage the Clean channel’s crisp, clear, and harmonically dense voice, which covers everything from pristine chime to old-school grit when you engage the push-pull Boost knob. Both of these channels include independent 3-band EQs, further bolstered by a global Presence knob and a Master Volume for the Lead channel. Finally, the MT 15 V2’s rear panel seals the deal with a collection of handy utility features, including a tube-powered effects loop and a 7-watt half-power switch that gives you the power to achieve cranked tube saturation at living-room-appropriate volumes.

From crystalline cleans to pummeling grit and grind

Like the original MT 15, this V2 iteration packs two flexible channels that cover a seriously wide range of sonic ground — no surprise, considering this amplifier’s namesake is famous for paint-peeling leads, pristine clean riffs, and everything in between. Moreover, Sweetwater’s tone chasers champion the MT 15 V2’s powerful channel-specific 3-band EQs, the global Presence knob, and the Lead channel’s Master Volume.

  • Clean channel: Crisp, dynamic, and packed full of chime, the MT 15 V2’s Clean channel sings with a sweet and balanced tone that serves as a perfect sonic complement to the amp’s more aggressive flavors. What’s more, this channel also features a push-pull Boost knob that injects your signal with enough grit to cover classic crunch tones.
  • Lead channel: This channel unleashes the MT 15 V2’s preamp tubes in all their gritty glory, supplying you with a tight low-end punch and sharp treble definition even when your signal is slathered with thundering gain. Plus, the Lead channel leverages a push-pull Overdrive setting that cuts out two gain stages and revoices the amp’s low-end response for crunchy mid-gain attitude.

Five fire-breathing gain stages

The PRS MT 15 V2 packs a whopping six preamp tubes into its compact lunchbox chassis, resulting in five hard-hitting gain stages before the Master Volume. This saturation-rich arrangement puts everything from harmonically complex cleans to grinding, metal-ready riffage at your command with the simple twist of a knob. A set of 5881 (or 6L6GC-S TR) power tubes rounds it all out to deliver 15 watts of vibrant valve tone. And remember, these are tube watts, so the MT 15 V2’s 15-watt rating can get seriously loud. Luckily, PRS equipped this pint-size powerhouse with a half-power switch on the back to switch into a more studio- and living-room-friendly 7-watt mode.

Tube-driven effects loop

From his searing riffs to his soaring solos, Mark Tremonti almost always tweaks his tone with just a touch of subtle delay to space out his sound. Fittingly, the MT 15 V2 boasts a top-of-the-line tube-driven effects loop to accommodate all manner of time-based and modulation effects without coloring your preamp tone. Whether you’re locking in your favorite reverb pedal or mirroring Mark’s always-on delay tone, the MT 15 V2’s tube-driven effects loop has you covered.

PRS MT 15 V2 Features:

  • V2 iteration of PRS’s modern-classic MT 15 Mark Tremonti amp head
  • V2 adds a push-pull Overdrive control on the Lead channel that cuts out 2 gain stages for crunchy mid-gain tones
  • 6 preamp tubes supply 5 gain stages for rich, dense, and dynamic saturation
  • 2 power amp tubes provide 15W of power that can be easily split into 7W with the rear-panel half-power switch
  • 2-ch design, with included footswitch and front-mounted Lead/Clean switch
  • Clean channel delivers crisp, warm, and chiming clean tones, with a push-pull Boost control to capture gritty old-school rock bark
  • Lead Channel sings with valve-powered saturation, supplying everything from crunchy rhythms to gain-drenched chug to Tremonti-style soaring lead tones
  • Tube-powered FX loop is perfect for locking in your favorite time-based and modulation FX
  • Multiple speaker jacks to accommodate a wide variety of cabs
  • Compact form factor is perfect for gigging musicians

Reviews

Amazing amp.
They say it is a two channel amp. I found with the gain boost on the clean channel and with the two gain stage removal on the lead channel, you can dial anything from
Glass clean to rock to heavy metal. The EQ on both channels is very musical through the entire sweep. Do not let the 15 watts scare you. This thing is seriously loud.
PRS MT15
I recently purchased this head and paired it with a Bergantino AD112 Cab that I have had sitting for several years without use. The combination is absolutely amazing. It sings with clarity on the clean channel and has crunch as well as high gain on the lead channel.

I love the design- the clean channel has a boost on the treble knob that brings in more gain on the clean side but still remains very clear and clean yet will push some gain and mile breakup when engaged. On the Lead channel, an overdrive option is on the treble knob that allows for cutting some of the gain to give it more overdrive and less distortion. Full on lead is high gain. More gain that I ever really desire to use.

Having the attenuation switch on the back to cut power in half is awesome as well. This amp can get loud, but remains controlled. Years ago I had a Fender 40W Hot Rod Deluxe that I could never tame. This amp sounds better to my ears other than some of the magic baked into the older Fender Amp.

I won't mention the Bergantino cab other than to say that Jim Bergantino really did cook up some magic in the cab. They no longer sell them but the beauty of this cab is the speaker doesn't break up- it accurately reproduces what the amp is sending which is what I prefer. The combination of the PRS head and this cab is certainly magical.

Lasyly, I purchased a AmpRX Brown Box to attenuate and manage voltage. Setting the brown box to 117 volts really helped the head to sound best. The Brown Box is killer and worthy of a review in its own right. I wish I had one of these years ago with that Hot Rod Deluxe- might have held onto the amp.

I very highly recommend the PRS MT15 for what I need(want). It basically has 4 channels the way I look at it with the 2 options on the clean side and 2 on the lead. Yes, footswitch only controls between the two, but tone shaping wise there is a lot here. The tone stack is very musical and the amp is very quiet.

My only gripe is that I purchased it as a returned item, most likely due to noise on the clean side. I did some checking and talked to SW support and found one of the tubes in the clean preamp section had an X marked on it. I pulled that tube and switched it with one of the tubes on the lead channel and the noise was gone in the clean, but present in the lead. Clearly looked like a tech identified the faulty tube but it wasn't changed prior to reselling. SW is shipping me a new 12AX7 which should solve the issue.

Final note- and back to the AmpRx voltage attenuation box- with the voltage attenuated from household (123v in my case) down to 117, the faulty tube is much less noisy so this to me shows how much the attenuation of the voltage and then being supplied consistently helps the amp perform better.

Special shout out to Winter Wolcott for always being there to help me out! SW rules when it comes to customer assistance, support and follow-through after the purchase.

Impressed
The V2 version has surpassed expectation. The price, versatility, sound, quality, and bang for buck show PRS indeed answered the call and upped the game for competing in the lunchbox realm. It now has an improved noise floor in high gain mode. The clean is exceptional imo with enough headroom to do small/medium spaces without any sound reinforcement/PA help. It is super portable yet powerful. It can be scaled up for larger gigs too using a one, two, or even four twelve speaker cab via its output jacks. Even two 16ohm 4x12 cabs. The improved effects loop, push/pull channel options, and improved lower noise floor in conjunction with a new properly scaled master volume pot make it more user friendly and easier to dial in. Hopefully V3 will have a footswitch capable of using both red and orange settings because it really has three channels even though you can only access two via footswitch. The included gig bag, although a nice touch, is a pain to shoehorn the amp in. Be careful not to damage any knobs when using it because it's a bit too tight a fit for my liking. Not a dealbreaker but could be improved imho.

Great Versatile Monster Amp
Great tones whether on the clean or lead channel.
Awesome new features such as the clean boost and the overdrive pull on the lead channel.
The only slight issue is in the FX loop. When you have effects pedals in the loop and engage them, there is a noticeable
"hiss" noise. It is minor and only when pedal is engaged. This is a tad annoying, but not a show stopper IMO.

MT15
This thing is a beast.
Incredibly low noise floor for such a high gain amp.
Don't let the 15 watt label deter you from this one.
It is pushing to close to double that with the big bottle 6L6 power tubes.
More gain on tap with the 6 12AX7 pre-amp tubes than anyone will ever need.
It will cover any needs you have genre wise.
The added crunch channel is really nice addition.
Effects loop is top notch.
Glad to have a amp again after 7 years.
Missed actual feedback from a real speaker something I could never get in the box.
Half star off as the case that comes with it does not fit easily or really at all.
It hits way above its price point.
