Reviews

A hobbyist home studio singer/songwriter's experience...
First off, I really have no right owning this amazing piece of gear. I'm a hobbyist sound engineer and a singer/songwriter with a small home studio. I bought it as a YOLO gift for my 50th birthday. A piece like this really needs no review but I'd like to report my experience with it as it might help someone else like me.

Let me start by saying I'm a solo acoustic player and singer and use a three mic setup. I use a vocal mic (TLM103) and a stereo pair of mic's (KM184's) on the acoustic guitar. With this setup, I get a lot of bleed into all mic's. The guitar bleeds into the vocal mic and the vocal bleeds into the guitar mic's but using the 3:1 rule, it sounds natural and beautiful to my ears. (I record everything live. Single tracks and take lanes always seem to lack that live feel.)

With that, I initially wired the Bricasti as the last unit in the rack at the tail of the chain and it sounded washed out. Even experimenting with the dry & wet signal didn't seem to improve it much. Now you might laugh but I had a weird dream about the rack setup and woke up to rewire the rack so that the Bricasti was on the vocal only and not on the tail of the rack chain. With my three mic setup mentioned above, I think the bleed was causing the washed out sound. So I rewired it and it was heaven. I get the full strength of the reverb on the vocal and the ambient bleed from the guitar into the vocal mic so the Bricasti is lightly touching the acoustic guitar but the KM184's on the guitar are both dry. (Acoustic guitar has a natural reverb anyway I think) To me, it sounds amazing.

Well, that's my off-the-wall "review." Hopefully it was helpful.

5 star sound not convinced of the price
Out of the box, I was just blown away. I've never heard anything like it. Every reverb just surrounds you so realistically that it's 3D and the quality is just...wow. The quality is unmatched without a doubt but the price. Ouch. I'm not convinced that $ is worth the reverbs to be perfectly honest. Seems to be more about bragging rights with the price. But at the end of the day, you won't find a better reverb unit. It is above and beyond the best.
Bricasti??????? - Say What?????????????? - is that an Italian Toaster or something?
I needed reverb so that singers would sound great when they were tracking- so they would relax / love the sound of their voice and therefore record a great performance - I wanted Analogue rather than a plug in - I wanted a natural sound that would wrap around their voice and really make the singer sound great and feel great performing...what do you get ?

So I started looking around asking a few buddies about what was available abd searching the web...

In terms of current models I could only find the Lexicon PCM96 - yeah the Pug Ins have taken over nad won! I already had all the great Pluf In Verbs - Valhalla and Lexicons and others from Izotope to UAD

So I looked at making my own plate reverb using some transducers - that came to an early demise as the quality and size to get the right sound was dependent on- yep size...

So I was lost - well one day I was talking to my Sweetwater Rep - Alexander Verbitskiy - a very cool 3 time Emmy winning Engineer Mixer and Producer! (- Alex is incredibly helpful goes the extra mile and always tries to help you get the best gear for what you are doing...)

Anyway Alex says "you need a Bricasti" - I said what - why what the heck is that?

He said " its the best reverb ever made - I said "never heard of it - sounds like an italian toaster or something - whats a Bricasti?"

He could not believe I had never heard if it and I thought he was having me on - so I kept talking about the Lex PCM96 - I might have to get one of these as well...

Anyway - yeah you guessed it - I got the "Bricasti" - the italian toaster and man it is not only amazing but it looks cool as well - easy to use and wraps itself around any instrument and makes it sound good - that includes vocals..

So now I live in Bricasti heaven every day with lsuh vocals and mean guitar that really sounds absolutely fantastic...

How did it happen - well you just gotta talk to Alex - he's an amazingly talented very knowledgeable guy who could sell ice to eskimos and probably has already... Oh yeah if you need a rever - get the italian toaster it cooks any sound well!

Bricasti - So good so nice so warm so clear so incredible! I probably need another one - but don't tell Alex - he's Russian by the way - but you know Russian people are great - especially when they live in America and help to "Make America Sound Great Again" for people like me!

Oh yeah ignore all the people who don't want to spend this kind of money on a reverb (- they will always be too scared to commit) - there's no plug in like it and nothing even comes close to it..just get one = bite the bullet swim in the pleasure and pain of knowing your sound will take a giant leap ahead...

Watch out for Alex he knows the best gear to get and just finished helping me upgrade my new Studio to "state of the Ark"... yeah you know what I mean...

Lastly I wrote this cause I felt like it - full disclosure - when someone as good as Alex works with you on your sound it gets better - as good as Emmy/ Grammy level...then its up to you to just create and bake..! the italien toaster just adds the perfect icing to any musical cake you bake!!!

Get hold of Alex for the best advice you will ever get from a Sweetwater rep - I hope you find your toaster like I found mine!

M7 Review; Is it still king?
8 dual core DSP's (16) running one reverb algorithm with (20 pS jitter) AES digital control/routing as a plug in with the new Liquid Sonics "M7 Link".

Do 16 DSP's sound better than a native reverb or a DSP reverb using 1/2 or a a whole SHARC chip? Yes.

Here's the rub; if you can't tell the difference between "native" or "lower DSP" reverbs and the M7, revisit your headphones/amp/converters/speakers/room correction/bass traps. How do you hear a "10" reverb on a "5" system?

Someday 24 core computer DAW's and plug ins may allow the allocation of one algorithm to 8 cores and become "as good", but until then, the M7 is still hard to beat.

Easy-Awesome-Best
Funny story. When I first got the M7 I hooked it up as an Aux send on my Apollo 8x. Got it to work but noticed the effects all sounded a like for like 2 months. I would turn the knob and thought sounds really good but every effect sounded very similar.

Untill yesterday I pressed the enter button after selecting a preset. Theres your problem. Lmao.

Wow!!! Off the hook. A & B'd a few different plugins including 7th Heaven. There is something about the processization of all the electronics in this unit that puts this on Mt. Everest.

I also use this into my Apollo 8x AES/SPDIF. Need to buy xlr type aes converter to rca type aes/spdif. Also, cant use reg xlr and rca wires. They HAVE to be AES/SPDIF XLR/RCA wires.

Well super thumbs up from here. Expensive but absolutely worth it!!

Cheers!!

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?
Ryan Clapper
The Bricasti M7 has some of the most organic and useable reverbs that I have ever heard from an emulation! The space that this unit creates doesn't sound artificial in any way, and in fact is almost as true to my ears as a source in an actual acoustic space.  The Bricasti not only emulates the sound of classic spaces and reverbs of the past but adds some new spaces to my sonic palette as well. It truly has a depth and realness to its sound that adds a ton of musicality to any source!
