Reviews

Solidly built, good-sounding microphone
My use case for this product is a bit unusual. I needed a way to work on vocals while traveling for business, so my requirements included small, light and solidly-built.

This isn't generally considered a vocal mic, but it performed like a champ. The recording didn't have the typical highs-emphasized sound of a sub $ lavalier. It produced a surprisingly full-sounding vocal, and didn't pick up much of the room sound in a less than ideal acoustic environment.

I'm a fan!

I would definitely recommend the VXLR Pro if you're connecting the mic to an audio interface, which is what I did.

Good Mic!
This is a good mic to use when working with Zoom... the primary use for me. (Not as my main mic during Source Connect/Zoom sessions.) It's got a wider range, fatter sound than the previous model. Clear enough on the top end without be harsh.

Good Mic Bad Clip
The mic works well and has good fidelity and overall audio quality for a voice lav mic. But the clip is not only fiddly, but when you do get it installed, not secure. It's much too easy for the mic to fall out of the clip. There's a good 3rd person youtube video that shows how to mount the mic to the clip, but knock it around or try to put the windscreen on, and it will come out of the clip.
Quality is OK But Getting it Going is Another Thing
I bought two of these with the intention of using them for interview type situations. I also bought two VXLR's (3.5mm to XLR) adaptors to make that happen. At first I thought I had two bad mics because neither worked on my RME UFX. So I called Rode and found out I'd bought the wrong adaptor. I needed the powered version of the VXLR. Those are four times the price of the VXLR. I also plugged these in to my Roland RO7 and at first neither worked. I learned I had to turn on "plug in power" to make that happen. Now one of them works but the other doesn't. So it was a frustrating start. I guess one could say it's a "bug in the user" but it all seems a little too complex for such a simple task. Further, I think Rode could do a better gig of making it plain that some things need to happen if you're using this in a professional mixing environment.

So I'm not dissing the quality. The one that works is not bad. But adding eighty bucks to the price of admission (after the mics are purchased) was an unpleasant surprise. Also, the wire is pretty flimsy. I don't see it taking any real abuse at all.

great mic with 1 fatal flaw
This mic is amazing! the sound quality is top notch. The fatal flaw is the mic clip it is absolutely awful. The bright white "rode" on the clip is so visible and the lav falls right off the clip. I found the lav dangling on a few jobs and now it's completely lost and I can't find any replacements online. until they fix this issue stay away which is sad cause the sound quality is awesome.
