Single-cut Special with P-90 Pickups and a Period Neck

Countless players have found the Gibson Les Paul Special, with its lightweight design and unique tonal response, to be easy to pick up yet impossible to put down. So it is with today’s Les Paul Special; its easy-gigging weight and P-90 chunk ’n’ chime will earn this guitar a special place in any serious guitarist’s collection. A breathable nitrocellulose lacquer finish, handwired electronics, and a vintage ’50s mahogany neck make this single-cut a dead ringer for yesterday’s sought-after classics. Yet modern performance options, which include a factory fret Plek treatment, make today’s Gibson Les Paul Special a force to be reckoned with.

Lightweight mahogany body

Originally released in 1955 as a lighter alternative to the back-breaking Les Paul Standard, the solid-mahogany Gibson Les Paul Special has given players a tone, response, and comfort all its own. Today’s Les Paul Special packs all the appeal of the timeless design in a great-playing and well-equipped modern form.

Nitro lacquer finish

Like the original, this Les Paul Special comes finished in a lightweight nitrocellulose lacquer. Nitro finishes are significantly thinner than modern polyurethane finishes. Not only is this approach period-correct, but some also suggest that this allows the guitar to “breathe” for improved sonics and, over time, to take on the look of a lovingly cared-for classic.

P-90 pickups with Orange Drop caps

If you consider yourself among the ranks of the many fiercely loyal P-90 fans, as so many of us here at Sweetwater do, you already know the unique tonal palette this pickup pairing brings to the iconic Les Paul Special. It’s an amazingly versatile sound with its own brand of grit — a bit brighter, leaner, and less refined than a humbucker, though almost as hot. Hit your amp hard, and the Les Paul Special’s P-90s really wail. Plugged into a proper tube amp, you can elicit grind, sizzle, and bark that would be impossible to achieve with other more common pickup types. Handwired controls complete with classic-era Orange Drop capacitors round out the GIbson Les Paul Special’s choice electronics.

Plek’d for precision playability

The Gibson Les Paul Special plays fast and precise right out of the case, thanks in large part to its Plek fret treatment. Typically reserved for top-dollar custom guitars, this computer-guided process levels frets with pinpoint precision, providing one of the most consistent fingerboards you’ll ever own. Each note rings loud and clear, and the fret edges feel as smooth as silk. With today’s Les Paul Special playing and sounding as great as it does, it’ll be hard to justify spending money on a vintage model.

Gibson Les Paul Special Solidbody Electric Guitar Features:

  • A single-cut Special with P-90 pickups and a period neck
  • Classic, lightweight mahogany slab body
  • Hand-filling vintage ’50s mahogany neck
  • Rosewood fingerboard with Plek’d medium jumbo frets
  • 2 single-coil P-90 pickups
  • Handwired with Orange Drop capacitors
  • Breathable nitrocellulose lacquer finish

What is Certified Open Box Gear?

At Sweetwater, we're so picky that what we call "Certified Open Box" is actually better than what most music retailers sell as "new" gear! Our gear hasn't endured hundreds of people a week plunking away at all the keyboards, fumbling through Stairway to Heaven on every guitar or playing with every fader and knob on a mixer or control surface.

Certified Open Box (also known as a demo) means we’ve had it out of the box for our YouTube channel, displayed at events, tested in our studio, or maybe it was in a customer’s hands for a few days and isn’t ‘factory fresh’ as a result. Every Certified Open Box item we sell has Sweetwater’s 2-year Total Confidence Coverage™ warranty and has been tested and verified up to ‘new’ specs by our factory-authorized technicians to make sure it’s in perfect working order before we ship it to you.

When you buy a Certified Open Box item at Sweetwater, you get:
  • 2-year Total Confidence Coverage Warranty™!
  • Products inspected and tested by our factory-authorized techs, guaranteed to function like new (or better)!
  • FREE shipping on most items
  • Equipment that will MEET or EXCEED your expectations!

Reviews

One word: Dynamic
This is my first guitar with P90s and the hype is real. Sometimes you realize they got it right the first time. Can get super crunchy and clean up nicely with just a change in touch. And holy sustain from that wrap around tail piece. Shout out to Jonah for getting me a great deal, can't thank you enough bro.
The Gibson I Wish I Had Bought...
...YEARS AGO! I have had several Les Pauls, a Classic, a Standard, etc, I have had the SG Standard and a Special. I have a Grace Potter Flying V. All good guitars but all of them have flaws that simply don't exist with the Les Paul Special. When compared to other Les Pauls, this one is light! Mine is 7.6lbs, gig ready! It stays in tune, wrap around bridge, easy string bends, plenty of snap, crackle, and pop! - this guitar is meant to be played hard....and it's a lot cheaper than a regular Les Paul too. When compared to SGs this guitar has proper strap button position and no neck dive or forward lean! Finally a Gibson that feels as good as my Fenders to play live, stays reasonably in tune, etc. The P-90s, TV yellow finish, wood grain visible, thick but not uncomfortable neck, etc. make this guitar a winner and a keeper. TONS of mojo! Complaints are few: A wish the back of the neck was satin or something smoother than sticky lacquer. It's not really that bad and far from a deal-breaker but noticeable when compared to my Fender Custom shops. I had my Les Paul Special set up by Sweetwater and highly recommend you do the same. Plays as smooth as butter and is truly addictive!

P90’s Rock…Period!
The Gibson Les Paul Special is just that…Special. I like the hand filling 50's profile neck and those P90 pickups are throaty and articulate. If you like Gibsons, this really adds another dimension of tone to your playing. From full range cleans to rude in-your-face hard rock, it delivers! Another amazing wonder is the wrap around tailpiece. Very smooth under the picking hand and, even though its only intonation adjustment is 2 small screws that slightly change the overall angle, was perfectly intonated upon receiving. There was a little mix up when Sweetwater sent the wrong serial number guitar from the one I had chosen. I noticed this when the guitar was in transit and had looked at my invoice. I immediately called Sweetwater and they arranged for the delivery driver to pick up the first guitar when the right one was delivered…all in only 48 hours time! This is why I love to do business with Sweetwater. They are tops in customer service. I would like to thank Jim Ridings, Tommy Lansidel, and the rest of the team for making this another wonderful buying experience.

Gibson LP Special (TV Yellow) Experience
Cannot say enough about how great this LP Special is, from the beautiful translucent TV Yellow finish that displays the wood grain, to the buttery smooth action and playability. Sounds great unplugged, but the real magic takes place by plugging it in to hear those P-90s. Working with Sales Engineer Drew, from order through delivery, was fantastic. He answered all my questions, ensured that I was able to see photos of the actual model I was purchasing, and kept me apprised on the progress of the bone nut upgrade and custom setup. Sweetwater will continue to be my go-to source for music equipment purchases. Thanks again Drew and the Sweetwater!

Xmas gift.
While browsing sweetwater at 2:00 am. Xmas day, i was checking an EPI crest wood i intended to purchase with tax rebate. I thought , before i pass out lemme check the GIBSON offerings. Long story short the one i picked to view was sweet, pun intended. I was so tired i was about to click off. I saw the last digits in serial # were my birth year . So i checked the rest of the # . All serial #'s match my whole birthday. DAY MONTH AND YEAR. Needless to say i carted it immediately ,and didn't sleep for two days. I know the TV yellow is popular and i was worried about the hold time until rebait . ( the really cool part ). As soon as SWEETWATER opened after Xmas i spoke with Ty ,i dont think he even had coffee,i explained the rebait issue and he assured me that he would make sure that it was mine. Later STEVE from Sweetwater called and confirmed . What service, this is my third guitar from SW. NEVER an issue, Really HAPPY
Music background: Slim next to none

From rockers to jazz cats, there are generations of guitarists right here at Sweetwater who swear by Gibson guitars. Not only do they make many of the most iconic solidbody electric guitars of all time - the Les Paul, the SG, the Flying V - but they also produce classic hollowbody and semi-hollowbody models and some of the most iconic acoustic guitars on the planet. We play them all! Our close relationship with Gibson often allows us to stock exclusive models and rare finds, and we're always happy to turn players and collectors on to the gems in the Sweetwater Guitar Gallery. We also have access to all the latest Gibson hardware, and the Sweetwater Guitar Repair Shop has upgraded countless guitars with their top-of-the-line humbuckers, classic P-90s, and more.
